Today we begin a New series of songs under the heading ” Music Directors singing for other Music Directors “.

In this series, I intend to discuss songs and the Music Directors who sang under the baton of other Music Directors for various reasons. It is not a common occurrence, that is why it has some Historical importance.

On a rough estimate, which varies as much the count of stars in the sky, there were more than 1500 Music Directors who have given music to Hindi films starting with Alam Ara-1931. Most MDs were smaller ones and the major ones, who gave music to more that 50 films may be around 300 or so. This is all a guess work,as no fixed information is available in this regard.

In the initial era of the Talkie films, most composers were also singers and sang in their own films mainly. Even then there were few cases where MDs sang for other Music Directors, but those songs are not available now as in those days not all songs of a film were put on records. This was the position till about 1940, after which it started in full swing-almost.

For this series,I have selected composers from 1950 onwards. Many composers entered the film world as singers and then switched to composing, like Vasant Desai,S D Burman, Shyamsunder, S N Tripathi, Ninu Mujumdar, S D Batish, Snehal Bhatkar, Sudhir Phadke, Hemant Kumar etc.

Some very well known composers never sang any songs, like O P Nayyar, Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, Kalyanji Anandji, Khayyam, Roshan (there were few songs in the 50s sung by a ” Roshan”, but he was a Radio artist and not this Roshan), S Mohinder, Salil Chaudhary, N Datta, Dattaram etc.

Some composers like A R Qureshi, Nashad etc sang only in their own films.

There were some singers like Kishore Kumar who also produced and acted in films and gave music too.

I have opted for only composers who were not frequent singers(except Chitalkar, who sang very few songs for others),as that is what constitutes the novelty value.

The first song in this series is from film-Tilottama-1954, sung by Chitragupta and Shamshad Begum. The Music Director was S N Tripathi.

Chitragupta was born brought up and educated in Bihar. He was perhaps the most educated composer of his times. he had done M.A. in Economics from Patna University and also taught for few years. He came to Bombay in 1945 and having learnt classical music wanted to become a composer. He started as an assistant to S N Tripathi. His first break came in 1946 with ” Lady Robin hood”. Initially he got only stunt and devotional films to do. In 1955, Dada Burman recommended his name to AVM for “Shiv Bhakta “. This was a landmark film for Chitragupta, because he used Lata for the First time in this movie. Later Lata and Chitragupta had very good relations, till the end.

Actually Chitragupta should be counted as No 1 composer in using Lata’s voice, but this fact has been forgotten because he mostly composed for lesser known B and C grade movies unlike Madan Mohan, Roshan, Shankar Jaikishan, C Ramchandra or S D Burman. As we have come to realise by now, he was in no way less capable of composing good tunes for Lata.

Chitragupta was a very homely family man with a middle class mentality. He had a fun group comprising of Lata, Usha, Meena, Dilip Dholakiya, Prem Dhawan and Chitragupta. They used to have lot of fun at the home of Chitragupta. Lata liked their food very much. Chitragupta Shrivastav was a Kayastha ( ” Lalaji ” as they are called in Bihar ) and their Non veg food was excellent.

In the late 80s, I came in personal contact with Chitragupta, when my close friend’s daughter married his elder son. When Chitragupta learned that I liked ” Sattu ki poori ” very much he called me to his house and we ate Sattu Puris and Alloo Sabji to our heart’s content !

His house in Prabhat building on Khar Road, Bombay had a Music room on the ground floor, where he composed his most tunes during 1959 to 1990. During the early 60s upto 65,he was so busy with work that-according to his son Anand- at one time four Lyricists were writing Lyrics in his home,Anand Bakshi in Garden, Majrooh in a room, Rajendra krishna in the Music room and Prem Dhawan under a palm tree and Chitragupta used to visit one by one to see their progress !!

Chitragupta was such a simple person that when Shankar Jaikishan demanded 5 Lakhs per film,he hesitated to ask for 50000 !

He remained a typical Gentleman till the end. He was expert in using Bihari folk tunes in his songs. he became the First Music Director of the First Bhojpuri film ” Ganga maiyya tori piyri chadhaibo’-1962. his main singers remained Lata, Rafi and Mukesh.

As far as singing songs is concerned, it was his hobby. He must have sung about 30 odd songs in 20 films in his career. Most songs were for S N Tripathi, who was his Guru in film Music.

Today’s song is from film TILOTTAMA-1954. It wa a Basant pictures film, directed by Babubhai Mistry. MD was S N Tripathi and the cast was Chitra, Kailash, Indira Bansal, B M Vyas etc.

The story was-

Shukracharya the Guru of Asuras had a strong desire to rule the heavens. He always competed with Brihaspati, the Gods’ Guru. To achieve his ambition he created two Asurs- Sund and UpSund. He trained them so that they became invincible. These brothers conquered Prithwi Lok and were to attack the heavens. Th Gods became panicky and went to Bramha ji. Bramhaji knew that once these brothers had killed the wife of a poor Bramhin and the Bramhin had given a curse to them that a woman will cause their downfall and death. Bramhaji created the most beautiful apsara -Tilottama and she was sent to these rakhshasa. She won their love and returned to heaven.

When Sund-Upsund conquered the heaven, they dethroned Indra and made all Gods their captives. At the time of sitting on the Throne both wanted Tilottama as their wife. But Tilottama told them that she will only marry the mightier amongst them. Both Sund and Upsund started fighting with each other and in this they destroyed each other.

Thus the plan of Shukracharya was foiled by the manas kanya of bramha, Tilottama.

Now let us enjoy the fun song from Chitragupta and Shamshad Begum….

Lyrics

Jo mard ullu shakl ke
Wo akl thha tera raat din
Wo thokar miley naukar bhi
chakkar hi khaate raat din
o o
Jo phool khilte hain unhen
bhanwre hi choome raat din
aji bagiya hai apne baap ki
hum kyun na ghoomen raat din

duniya na tere baap ki
na mere baap ki
duniya na tere baap ki
na mere baap ki
achha nahi hoga jo humse
tip taap ki
humse tip taap ki

Bhagwan ne hisaab dekha
jodi milaayi
aji bhagwaan ne hisaab dekha
jodi milaayi
har mard ke liye yahaan
ek aurat banaayi
aji ik aurat banaayi

Ho no o o o
aurat ko mila roop
usne rang jamaaya
usne rang jamaaya
aur mard ko andar hi andar
bandar banaaya
dekho ji bandar banaaya
trr
duniya na teri baap ki
na mere baap ki
par bhawre ke liye
bani kaliyaan gulab ki

duniya na teri baap ki
na mere baap ki
achha nahin hoga jo humse
tip tap ki
humse tip tap ki

dil tumne diya humne liya
khaata kya hua
dil tumne diya humne liya
khaata kya hua
tere nain mere nain mile
khaata kya hua
bolo ji khaata kya hua
Ho o o o o o
khaata kya hua
maze ki
naadaani ho gayi
naadaani ho gayi
tu gori bani
kaale ki patraani ho gayi
dekh patraani ho gayi

o duniya na tere baap ki
na mere baap ki
main kaahe ko raani banoongi
kaale saanp ki
arre
duniya na tere baap ki
na mere baap ki
achha nahin hoga jo humse
tip tap
tip tap
tip tap ki
humse tip tap ki

Arunji,
This is a fabulous song you have selected to begin your series. I would just like to endorse what you said about Chitragupta-Lata Mangeshkar. I am a huge fan of this combine, at par with the best in the business. And would also add that for Rafi also he gave some incredibly beautiful songs, especially duets with Lata Mangeshkar.
