Meri nigaah ne ye kaisa khwaab dekha hai

It is time for the alphabet ‘M’ in the A-Z of Rafi songs series. I have taken my time in deciding which type songs are a must in the series and accordingly have almost finalised the songs in this list. Initially, when planning this series I just made a random selection of songs for ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ to start it on time with Rafi sahab 33rd death anniversary.
There are 600 plus songs starting with ‘A’ in the list. Just as well that the song from ‘Insaniyat’, viz Apni chaaya mein bhagwaan bithha le was already there in my draft box, so I could decide quickly to start the series, with the song. Similar to ‘A’ there are more than 550 songs starting with alphabet ‘M’ in the excel sheet. In a serious attempt to include various styles / genre of Rafi songs in the series, I started to go through the list in earnest starting with ‘J’. When I reached the letter ‘M’, I thought I had found quite a nice song from the unending list of songs, one picturized on Mehmood and composed by S. D. Burman, so as to kill two birds with one stone.
But that was not to be. So S. D. Burman and Mehmood are now separated in this series and are not being represented in one song. The reason being that I have received this wonderful song suggestion from Sudhir Sir, for ‘M’ song in this series. I like it a lot on the first hearing. It is composed by Maanas Mukherjee and written by Nida Faazli. It is a solo Rafi song from ‘Lubna'(1981) talking about dreams. The composition itself is a bit dreamy. Kanwaljeet is listening to this song on a record player and goes on to imagine singing it with his beloved Zahira. Kanwaljeet is an actor who is better known as the one who got to sing this beautiful song – a Khayyam-Rafi-Kamal Amrohi creation from the film “Shankar Hussain”. Listening to this song ‘meri nigaah ne yeh kais khwab dekha hai’ , I am wondering how come he got so lucky to get another beauty to sing on screen.
About Maans Mukherjee, who is better known as the father of singer ‘Shaan’, I had heard one song from the film ‘Shaayad’ composed by him, a Rafi solo which goes ‘khushboo hoon main phool nahin hoon jo murjhaaungaa’. Shaan himself has referred to this song composed by his father on some T.V. shows. It seems now that he mentioned one song and neglected to mention another Rafi gem from ‘Lubna’ (1982) .
I have learnt of one incident related to this song today on a clip on youtube, which I am recounting.
One day Rafi sahab told Ravi (the composer) that a journalist had asked him if he knew of a song which was first recorded in his voice and than rerecorded by Kishore Kumar. Rafi sahab told the journalist that he doesnt know of any such incident, but he knows of a song which was recorded by Kishore Kumar and re-recorded by Rafi sahab composed by Ravi. Than Rafi sahab told Ravi that he has given the later’s name to the journalist and such a thing had happened. This was the title song of “Ek Mahal ho sapnon ka” which is actually a duet. Ravi went on to explain the song was recorded in Kishore Kumar’s voice earlier at the insistance of sons of the producer. Than after the recording, the song did not quite sound like it sounded when Ravi had composed and sung it himself for producer’s approval. When questioned by the producer, Ravi replied that if Rafi sahab had sung it, it would have sounded like it was meant to create which he liked. Thereafter the song was re-recorded with Rafi-Lata.
This was also an dream sequence song, picturised on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore. This incident has cleared a question in my mind about why the male version of the song ‘dil mein kisi ke pyar ka jalta hua diya’ is by Kishore Kumar. The Lata version is among my all time favourite Lata solos.
Now coming back to the song being discussed, this solo is a gem mainly for its rendition. Very few singers have this capacity to elevate a nice composition, so much higher. Rafi Sahab was one of those gifted singers. This is new, newer and newest Rafi song to feature in the blog. Obviously they cant any any newer for this movie released in 1981. And I am positive that very few people have heard this one, which deserved to be better known.
And lastly, I must thank Sudhir Sir, for suggesting this uncut gem, for this series. Far from doing justice to it, I am just glad to have this song as part of the series.
Song-Meri nigaah ne ye kaisa khwaab dekha hai (Lubna)(1982) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Nida Fazli, MD-Manas Mukherji
Lyrics
tassavvuraat ki mehfil sajaa rahaa hoon main
woh kaun hai jise apna banaa rahaa hoon main
ek inquilaab saa zer-e-naqaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
zameen pe chaltaa huaa maahtaab dekhaa hai
zameen pe chaltaa huaa maahtaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
jhuki jhuki si woh aankhen haseen kanwal jaise
jhuki jhuki si woh aankhen haseen kanwal jaise
chhupaa chhupaa sa tabassum koyi ghazal jaise
nazar nazar hai chaman woh shabaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
zameen pe chaltaa huaa maahtaab dekhaa hai
ulajh rahi thhi jawaani kayee sawaalon mein
ulajh rahi thhi jawaani kayee sawaalon mein
miley jo woh to hui raushni khayaalon mein
har ik sawaal ka apne jawaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne yeh kaisa khwaab dekhaa hai
zameen pe chaltaa huaa maahtaab dekhaa hai
zameen pe chaltaa huaa maahtaab dekhaa hai
meri nigaah ne
hmm hmmm hmm hmm
hmmm hmmmm hmm hmm
