The name behind the unforgettable sound of “Aa Gup Chup Gup Chup Pyaar Karen”(‘Sazaa’, 1951) – Sandhya Mukherjee. Remembering Sandhya ji on the anniversary of her birth today.
A child prodigy in music, she was encouraged wholeheartedly by her parents, who made arrangements for her to learn music from such stalwart artists like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Prof Chinmaya Lahiri. She was just fifteen years of age in 1946, when the Sangeet Parishad in Calcutta conferred upon her, the title of ‘Geetshree’.
Her debut in the film world happened under the direction of the renowned RC Boral, when in 1948, she sang her first film song for the New Theatres film ‘Anjangarh’. She caught the imagination of the audiences with her singing in film ‘Sazaa’ in 1951. Her active career in the film industry lasted only for eight years. In 1956, she sang the popular hit song – “Maine Jo Li Angdaayee’ in Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Jaagte Raho’. Then we do not hear the voice of this singer for many years. In 1973, her voice is heard in the film ‘Chimni Ka Dhuaan’, under the baton of Robin Chatterjee.
This song is from the film ‘Ek Do Teen’, a 1953 film produced and directed by Roop K Shorey under the banner of Shori Films. The cast of actors includes Meena Shori, Moti Lal, Majnu, Yashodhara Katju, Kaushalya, Satish Batra, Shaamlal, Ramesh Thakur, Ramlal, Kathana, Mattu, Moti Beena, Indira Bansal, K N Dar, Iftikhar, Mahendra Wahi, S Kapoor, Uma Dutt. The nine songs in this film have been written by Aziz Kashmiri, and the wonderful compositions are created by Vinod.
The song is a stage performance, which is picturized on Meena Shori Cuckoo. If one has to make a selection of the peppiest song by Sandhya ji in films, this song will win hands down. A lovely creation that has been sung with such gusto and abandon. Listen and enjoy.

Song-Aa jaa re balam tujhe meri qasam (Ek Do Teen)(1953) Singer-Sandhya Mukherji, Lyrics-Aziz Kashmiri, MD-Vinod
Chorus
Lyrics
tu jab se gayaa
pardes piya
mera jiyaa ghabraaye re
aa jaa re balam
tujhe meri qasam
mera jiyaa nahin laage re
tu jab se gayaa
pardes piya
mera jiyaa ghabraaye re
chale jo hawaa
dil doltaa mera
kyun akhiyon ko di hai sazaa
chale jo hawaa
dil doltaa mera
kyun akhiyon ko di hai sazaa
mujhe tera intezaar
mera jiyaa beqaraar
mujhe tera intezaar
mera jiyaa beqaraar
karoon yaad baar baar bewafaa
karoon yaad baar baar bewafaa
aa jaa re balam
tujhe meri qasam
mera jiyaa nahin laage re
tu jab se gayaa
pardes piya
mera jiyaa ghabraaye re
tujhe dhoondta hai mann
mere saanwre sajan
kar milne ka koi re jatan
tujhe dhoondta hai mann
mere saanwre sajan
kar milne ka koi re jatan
meri roye re jawaani
ke hai gham ki kahaani
meri roye re jawaani
ke hai gham ki kahaani
tu ne ek na maani re piyaa
o tu ne ek na maani re piyaa
aa jaa re balam
tujhe meri qasam
mera jiyaa nahin laage re
tu jab se gayaa
pardes piya
mera jiyaa ghabraaye re
tu jab se gayaa
pardes piya
mera jiyaa ghabraaye re

Excuse me Sudhir-ji, It is the famous dancer Cuckoo and not Meena Shorie in this video.

Bharat ji,
Yes, I stand corrected. Sincere apologies, should have paid attention to the close up view of the lady leading the dance. She is indeed Cuckoo.
And yes, we also see Motilal and Majnu in the clip, sitting at one of the tables in the restaurant.
Thanks for correction. 🙂
