The Voice of Mukesh #36
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

1949, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of Hindi film music. Many a music directors, lyricists and singers, wrote their histories in this year. There has been great music both before and after this singular year. But the numbers and quality of music from this year, simply speaks for itself.

Sachin Dev Burman was in his fourth year as a composer, and onto his seventh film. He had already captured the attention with his compositions for films like ‘Eight Days’ (1946), ‘Shikari’ (1946), ‘Do Bhai’ (1947) and ‘Vidya’ (1948). In 1949, he made music for the hit Dilip Kumar – Kamini Kaushal starrer titled ‘Shabnam’. The film is from the banner of Filmistan Studios, and is directed by B Mitra. Star cast includes Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Jeevan, Paro, Mubarak, Harun, Rajendra Singh, Shyama, Kukku. There are 10 songs in this film, all created by the lyricist composer pair of Qamar Jalaalabaadi and Sachin Da. Five of these wonderful songs are already showcased here on this blog.

Sachin Da used the voice of Mukesh in four of the songs. All the songs are duets, three with Shamshad Begum and one with Geeta Roy (Dutt). Two of these duets are already posted. Here is the third Mukesh duet from the film, in which he is accompanied by Shamshad Begum. The on screen scenario is very interesting. Appears to be that Kamini Kaushal is under some kind of restrictions or confinement. Jeevan seems to be sitting guard, along with one of his henchmen. And we have a troupe of dancers, who are supposed to entertain Kamini Kaushal. The dancers are arranged in a multi level structure. The main dancer (is she Cuckoo?) is in the middle. The accompanying dancers are on the lower level. And one level above the main dancer stands the leading man, Dilip Kumar, disguised as a gypsy and playing a mouth organ. The head gear, the bushy eyebrows and an extraordinary moustache make for a very good disguise, as he sings to make Kamini Kaushal realize who he really is.

A fun kind of a song, an exchange between two lovers. Enjoy.

Song-Tumhaare liye huye badnaam (Shabnam)(1949) Singers-Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

tumhaare liye huye badnaam
na bhoole phir bhi tumhaara naam
tum jaano yaa na jaano
tumhaari marzi
tumhaari marzi

o o o
jaao ji jaao
aaye badey mohabbat karne waale
mohabbat karne waale
hamen chhod kar beech nadi mein
paar utarne waale
paar utarne waale

chaahe laakhon do ilzaam
hum to kab se baney ghulam
tum maano yaa na maano
tumhaari marzi
tumhaari marzi

tum pardesi. . .
pardesi. . .
tum pardesi
tum harjaaee
phir kya hum se mel
jaao jaa kar aur kisi se
khelo pyaar ka khel

hamen auron se kya kaam
tumhaare bina nahin araam
tum maano yaa na maano
tumhaari marzi
tumhaari marzi

tum bhi zaraa jalne ka mazaa lo
hamen jalaane waale
hamen jalaane waale
hum kya jaanen kaun ho tum
o hamen manaane waale
hamen manaane waale

hum to aayenge subho shaam
hum to karenge roz salaam
pehchaano na pehchaano
tumhaari marzi
tumhaari marzi

tumhaare liye huyue badnaam
na bhoole phir bhi tumhaara naam
tum jaano yaa na jaano
tumhaari marzi
tumhaari marzi

Sudhir ji,
We are now moving into familiar territory as far as Mukesh songs are concerned. After being treated with the rarest Mukesh numbers, the immediate thought that comes to mind, now, is the familiar….how come this song was not yet posted?….

Shabnam, I suppose was the only film of Mukesh-SDB-Dilip saab combo.
Again, I suppose the only duet with Geeta Roy was actually sung on screen by Kamini Kaushal the heroine. Rest three duets with Shamshad Begum were pictured on others.

No doubts about 1949 being the watershed moment in the history of HFS.

Many Thanks.
