“Hamjoli” (1970) was produced by Prasan Kapoor and directed by T R Ramanna for Tirupati Pictures. In other words, this movie was produced by Jeetendra. The movie had Jeetendra, Leena Chandawarkar, Pran, Purnima,Shashikala,D K Sapru,Mehmood,Aruna Irani, Manmohan etc in it. Mumtaz had made guest appearance in this movie.
“Hamjoli”(1970) was by no means an original movie.
Peevesie’s mom, while covering the previous song from this movie had given this information:-
“”Hamjoli” was the remake of the 1964 Tamil hit ‘Panakkara Kudumbam’ (transl. Rich Family) starring M. G. Ramachandran. That film released on 24 April 1964, and ran for more than 150 days in theatres. The film was remade in Hindi in 1970 as ‘Humjoli’, in Kannada in 1978 as ‘Bhale Huduga’, and in Telugu in 1984 as ‘Intiguttu’. All versions except ‘Intiguttu’ were directed by the same director, T. R. Ramanna.
Peevesie’s mom had also given detailed story of the movie that I reproduce here:-
“Hamjoli” (or ‘Humjoli’ as the film’s title card says) was the story of two sets of rich fathers (as I can recall). One father (Pran) becomes rich by ditching his docile, loving & not-so-beautiful but wealthy wife (Purnima). He just goes on to marry the girl he loves (Shashikala) too, & even tries to kill his 1st wife; after the birth of their baby girl (who grows up to be Leena Chandavarkar ‘Ranibala’). Thankfully Purnima survives, which Pran finds out late into the movie, but not before the usual twists & turns of a standard Indian film.
The other rich, zamindar father (D.K. Sapru) has his grown up children (Jeetendra ‘Rajesh’ & Aruna Irani ‘Shobha’) walk out on him when they discover that he intends to marry a girl much-younger than the daughter itself as he is a widower.
Incidentally, Shobha & Ranibala are college friends & Rajesh promptly falls in love with the charming roommate of his sister. When they walkout of their father’s home the siblings land up in the same city as Ranibala, who has now been brought to the city (secretly) by her father (Pran), & is employed in her father’s office as a steno/receptionist/ secretary. She has a lot of clout in the office & ends up recommending Rajesh for a job in the organisation. Being in the same office also gives time for the romance to grow much to the displeasure of Manmohan (Shashikala’s nephew) who also has his eye on Ranibala. He feeds stories about the romantic jodi which leads Pran to cautioning Rajesh. So Rajesh ends up dancing with a cabaret dancer (Mumtaz) at a bar (the oldest trick used in films), leading to a heartbreak for Rani.
By the time the film runs it’s course of storyline, there is a resurfacing of the supposedly dead Purnima, return of the father (D. K. Sapru) after a change of heart, Pran revealing to Ranibala the reason behind Rajesh’s infidelity & Shashikala dying in the course of the climax.
In all of this, I forgot to mention a very important character- Shivram (Mehmood) who turns out to be a real-friend when Rajesh needs him. He helps the siblings by giving them a portion of his family home on rent, after getting permission from his father (Balram) & grandfather (Parshuram). Shivram also falls in love with Shobha & marries her. Mehmood played all the characters of Shivram, Balram & Parshuram as a tribute to the Kapoors- Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor & Randhir Kapoor (if my knowledge is correct, Randhir Kapoor had not yet made his acting debut when ‘Hamjoli’ released but was an assistant director in that period).
“Hamjoli” (1970) had six songs in it. As many as five songs have already been covered in the blog.
Here are the details of the songs that have been covered so far:-
| SNo in Blog | Song Title | Singer/s | Lyrics | Posted On | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 165 | Dhal gaya din ho gayi raat | Rafi, Asha Bhonsle | Anand Bakshi | 22 October 2008 | Picturised as “badminton” game song on Jeetendra and Leena Chandawarkar. There can not be worse badminton players than this duo. 🙂 |
| 1553 | Haay re haay neend nahin aaye | Rafi,Lata | Anand Bakshi | 2 July 2009 | Picturised on Jeetendra and Leena Chandawarkar |
| 1640 | Toone haan haan toone…hone lagi dil me tik tik tik tik | Lata, Rafi | Anand Bakshi | 18 July 2009 | Picturised on Mumtaz (guest appearance) and Jeetendra |
| 15746 | Ye kaisa aaya zamaanaa ye kaisa | Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mehmood | Anand Bakshi | 22 July 2020 | Picturised on Mehmood (triple role) and Aruna Irani as a comedy song |
| 19351 | Hu tu tu tu | Asha Bhonsle, Kamal Barot | Anand Bakshi | 3 September 2025 | Picturised on Leena Chandawarkar, Aruna Irani and others as a Kabaddi song. Their Kabaddi skill is as bad as their Badminton skill. 🙂 |
From the above list of songs, we find that two songs were “regular” song and dance songs. Apart from that, there was one comedy song (on Mehmood playing triple role- three generations). Other two songs were playing cum singing songs, where actors sing while “playing” badminton and kabaddi. How can these actors be so bad in the sports that they are shown playing. To me, even these two songs are comedy songs (inadvertently of course).
With five songs already covered, only one song is left to be covered. This song too is an unusual song. After watching two sports cum singing songs, here we are treated to a singing cum fighting performance. Jeetendra and Mehmood, while lip syncing in Rafi and Kishore Kumar’s voices respectively are singing as well as bashing people for no apparent reason. I have not watched this movie, but seeing that I was eight years of age when this movie was released, I could well have enjoyed this movie. Come to think of it, this movie was meant for movie goers with mental age of under 10, and I eminently qualified as its target audience. 🙂
Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
With this song, all the six songs of “Hamjoli”(1970) have been covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
