The third song of the series is another duet from the film ” Rang Mahal ” (1948). The singers are Mohammad Rafi and Suraiyya. The film is making a debut in the blog with this song. The film’s cast is Suresh, Suraiyya, Shahnawaz, Lalita Pawar and Anant Marathe. Myswar.com is crediting all songs of this film to K. Datta and V. Balsara, as Music Directors, whereas the Excel sheet of Rafi songs has only the name of K. Datta. The lyricist is Shiv Kumar.
The song must obviously be picturized on Suraiyya and Suresh, as Suraiyya never gave playback
to anyone. She only ever sang for herself. It has been a while since a song by her featured in the blog. This duet is also one of those, which I could not include in the series of A-Z of Rafi songs.
I liked this song especially for the unique voice of Suraiyya and Rafi’s new singing style, different from other songs of that period. Also the lyrics of the song are very original and innovative.
Suraiyya is one of the last singing stars of Hindi film industry who continued to hold her own in the era of playback singers. Not giving playback, must have limited her options. She sang some memorable songs in films under the music director like, Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Ghulam Mohammed, Khemchand Prakash and C. Ramchandra.
It is remarkable that a celebrity like her, having tasted success and been in the limelight, chose to avoid the film industry and media. Lived in Mumbai, and stayed a recluse, was never tempted to return for decades. After all anonymity and loneliness are two sides of the same coin.

As per HFGK,the MDs are K.Datta AND V A Balsara both. However we do not know which song was composed by whom (6 songs).

Was wondering what the word “udhedbun” meant and there is Nahm to give its meaning. What a wonderful cooperative effort this blog is seeing!!

Nice rendition of a playful romantic song. I have been wanting to write article on this song for months but got badly stuck in deciphering the second stanza of the song. I do agree that the style of singing and the lyrics are different.
Thanks for bringing this song to the notice of wider readers of this blog.
Suraiyya had given playback to Mehtaab in Sharda (1942), Sanjog (1943) and Kaanoon (1943). She also gave playback to Nimmi for a duet song https://atulsongaday.me/2009/09/24/dhadakte-dil-ki-tamanna-ho-mera-pyaar-ho-tum/ in addition to singing for herself in this song.

In the song, probably she is knitting a sweater/muffler and both the stanza’s are talking about the ‘dore’ i.e. the woollen ropes. The word “udhedbun ‘ is udhed and bun. ‘Bun’ or ‘boon’ is knitting and ‘udhed ‘ is the opposite of knitting, i.e. to undo the knitting or stitching.
The term ‘udhedbun’ is also used to describe a state of confusion.
So here it is serving twin purpose. The ‘taane baane’ is also ‘threads’ .
I have taken another look at the lyrics and this line is actually :
jab inhen ‘ boon ‘ chukoongi main
nazar tumhen karoongi main
Thank you about the information of playback given by Suraiyya and reminding of the wonderful ‘ghazal’ from ‘shama’. I have heard it a lot on radio, but saw it for the first time.
