Yesterday, just like that, I googled ‘nine thousand’. Did not expect to find anything really interesting and useful to write about. After all, it is just another number. But really, I was surprised. Wow, never thought I would find such an interesting information description that would be so appropriate for this huge milestone that we have arrived at today.

The ‘nine thousand’ number has a special meaning in the ‘anime’ world. (‘anime’ refers to Japanese cartoons / animation, a colorful style that have become so hugely popular in the recent years, with people of all ages). “Over 9000” is a popular catchphrase derived from the Japanese animation series Dragon Ball Z that is typically used as AN INNUMERABLE QUANTIFIER DESCRIBE A LARGE NUMBER OF SOMETHING. ‘Dragon Ball’ is a Japanese cartoon series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. It became so popular that when it ended, the company, Toei Animation almost immediately released a sequel titled, ‘Dragon Ball Z’. In one of the episode the main protagonist character Goku returns to the Earth after intense training in the Other World to face the Saiyan warriors Vegeta and Nappa, who had killed his friend Piccolo right before his arrival. As Goku powers up in rage, Vegeta senses an explosive increase in his power level and yells: “It’s over nine thousand!”. The phrase immediately caught on and continued to become popular, and the number 9000 soon became adapted as a slang term to describe something or someone of impressive strength.

That is what this blog is now becoming – a thing of impressive size and collection, that is unmatched anywhere on the internet. And by tomorrow, when the next post is uploaded, we can all claim our blog to be “over 9000” – a blog size that cannot be beaten or bettered.

Welcome all to the magical 9000th milestone in this merry musical journey that has now been on a exploration trip for more than 5 years. A journey that has been searching, discovering, and posting Hindi film songs of all varieties, spanning the 80+ years that this art form has now existed. More than the numbers, it is other aspects that make this number so formidable.

There are any number of sites online that have more than 9000 songs listed. But on this blog, it is an effort that is being attempted on a grand scale that has no peers anywhere on the internet. Every song is accompanied by full lyrics, added to which is a very well researched information packag about the demographic details of the song. Each song is accompanied by a full write up that talk about so many aspects of the film song, the artists and performers and about the life and culture itself. The most recent is the wonderfully researched series on the ‘Spiritual Souls of India’ by our dear Arunkumar ji Deshmukh, represented through their stories that have been filmed for the silver screen, and the film songs that represent their message and their life. Another series in progress is the songs of the season of rain, by Bharat Upadhyay, a new member of the team. And of course, the marathon A-to-Z series of Mohammed Rafi songs that has just been completed by Nahm ji. It is this format and compilation of information about the song, and the write ups, that makes this collection so unique, and so outstanding.

To this, we must add, the fact of dedication, consistency and fabulous team work that continue to be the driving characteristics of this blog. Over the years, a formidable team has come together – people whose love for this art form is so very deep, people who have massive in depth knowledge about the history of films and film music on the sub continent, and people who are dedicated to research information from many sources in an attempt to get as complete and as accurate a package of information for each song that has been posted. On the way, we have had visitors of repute who have become regular contacts – people who are known as the stalwart fans of film music, people who are historians and compilers of this heritage, and people who are relatives of artists and performers. It is a massive community that has come together on this blog. And all because of the untiring effort of the originator of this idea, dear Atul ji.

What started off as Song-a-Day more than five years ago, very quickly developed into multiple songs a day. There are seasonal variations of course. Days that we see just a trickle, and days that we see anywhere from 6 to 13 songs being posted in a span of twenty four hours. Given that each song takes a non trivial effort and time to be processed and posted, this is a fantastic achievement by any standards.

So let’s talk about what has been happening over the past 2 to 3 weeks. The festival season has just passed and everybody is busy with family and celebrations. And so for a time, the pace of songs being posted had slowed down, as Atul ji was also busy with his personal affairs and office work. But I am sure all will be wondering at the sudden spurt of energy that has become evident on the blog for the past one week or so. Our 8900th song was posted on 27th October – “Tumhaare Nainaa Dekh Ke Sunaa Hai Log Jogi Ho Gaye”. Then followed a few days of two or three postings, and then a sudden activity of posting songs that numbered anywhere from 7 to 10. Couple that with the fact that Atul ji has been traveling for the past three days, and has been working with these postings while on the train also. In fact he is in Delhi today, on official work. 🙂

Well, the secret behind that Atul ji shared with me on email just 2, 3 days ago. He shared that the date 13th November is very special for this blog. I wondered what it could be? He added that on this date the milestones number 5000 and 7000 were reached. It was without any preplanned action from his side. And so started the effort to get to the century number today. That is the reason you all would be wondering where is this spurt in postings over the past week or so, coming from. Avinash ji even commented last Saturday (9th Nov) enquiring whether that day’s was the record for maximum postings. Nine songs were posted that day. (Ah yes, Atul ji had responded that the record was 13, in a single day).

Thus the special reason for today’s milestone is revealed. Just keeping up the tradition that the 5000th song happened on 13th November, 2011, the 7000th song happened on 13th November, 2012 and now today, it is the same date again, and we are hitting the 9000th post. Congratulations to all friends and readers, and especially the band-wagoneers without whose
contributions these remarkable feat would not have been possible.

Ah, yes, you are thinking correctly. We are also celebrating another milestone, as we always do. 🙂 With this song, the tally of Rafi Sb’s songs has now reached 2100. A very befitting tribute and a very befitting honor for an artist who has had no equal, both as a singer and as a human being. The pinnacles of glory that he mounted in his field, never even once brought a change in his thinking and behavior towards his fellow beings. Always remembered for his humility, his friendliness, his tendency to be helpful to anyone who came to him. In an industry where arrogance and selfishness is commonplace, amongst those who have reached the top, and even those who haven’t, Rafi Sb’s personality and his character has been a unique example and a shining light of the humane face of the industry.

So much has been written and said about him, and his art that there is little that I will be able to add to. His abilities as a singer, and his success with playback art form is simply a reflection of his self effacing personality, totally lacking in any pride or arrogance for the self. For that reason, Rafi Sb was able to get ‘under the skin’ of any actor, and his voice would meld seamlessly into the personality of the performer and the role. His empathy and his understanding of the human emotions, and more than that, his ability to so accurately express the emotions – that is a hallmark characteristic that has not been seen in any other artist, period.

Atul ji and I have been back and forth many times trying to locate a befitting song for this occasion. There were no significant anniversaries, no significant individual milestones, no special events for 13th November. It was becoming difficult to locate an appropriate song for this occasion. Yesterday afternoon, as we were discussing, he suggested Rafi Sb’s name saying that he is close to the 2100 milestone. My mind immediately started to look for a song to fit the bill for the today. I went over many lists, browsed through the YouTube and shortlisted some songs. But none was really satisfying. The songs shortlisted are of great quality, but somehow my mind kept telling me – it has to be even better, the milestone is really major.

I chanced upon another list in file on my laptop, which contains some important favorites. Browsing through this list and then side by side checking with the blog list for already published songs, I came to this song. And my mind suddenly was taken by surprise – what, this song is not yet posted? And the decision was immediate.

A song in the semi classical genre, it belongs to the same category that consists of such marvelous gems like Rafi Sb’s “Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Re” and Manna Da’s “Laaga Chunri Mein Daag Chhupaaun Kaise”. How has this song escaped the notice of all of us – well that is no longer a mystery. Just the fact that the ocean of Hindi film songs is still so vast and unexplored that many such valuable treasures are still sitting out there, waiting to be rediscovered.

The film is ‘Badaa Aadmi’ from 1961. It is a K Amarnath production of a typical Sheikh Mukhtar film, directed by Kaushal Raj. The film has 6 songs, all of them carrying the classic hallmark of Chitragupt’s wizardry, and the lyrical beauty of Prem Dhawan’s quill. Three of the songs are already posted here. This is the fourth song to be showcased from this film. And the remaining two songs, I promise you, are no less wonderful. A less heard about film, carrying a treasure of musical gems – as usual.

The song is a stage performance. The singer on stage I am not able to clearly identify, as he is wearing a beard. May be it is Sajjan or maybe Subi Raj, the leading man in the film. I would think Sajjan, because Subi Raj is somewhat heavier build. And the dancer – is she Vijaya Chaudhry? I request other readers and friends to please help confirm the identification.

A song that is so beautifully crafted – the words, the melody and the rendering – it is all so chaste. It is a lovely pleasure to listen to. And as well equally a pleasure to watch, it has been performed so well. Once again, preparing this write up continues to strengthen my belief that there still are innumerable gems out there that still wait to be brought on here. What with our current stock of 9000 songs – the total number of songs as per the Geet Kosh, from 1931 to 1980 is in excess of 43,000. Given that a fairly large number of songs from the 1930s and 40s are not yet traceable, we still are talking about a number in the range of probably 30,000 songs that should be available. And when you add the decades after the 1980, wow, the number is going to go well beyond 70,000. The numbers seem very daunting. But yes, 9000 seemed very daunting when we had hit our first 1000. Dogged dedication and copious contributions are going to continue I am sure. We are well on our way to reach for the large numbers too. They may be in the skies, but hey, we have a very musical ‘udan khatola’ that will take us there.

So friends, we celebrate a major accomplishment today, but rest assured, there is a whole universe still facing us, and waiting to be explored. Wishing all fellow wagoneers a wonderful and marvelously musical journey that continues. And the lines of my favorite song always come back to me.

tamanna hai ye saath chalte rahen hum
na beete kabhi ye safar

Congratulations to all, once again. Let the drums roll and let the music play.

Amen.

Singer on the stage is the hero of the film Subiraj. He was very slim & handsome, when he started his career with ‘CID Girl’ in late 50s.
