We come to this song from the film Aas Paas (1980). This Lata song I have always liked and it constantly comes to mind whenever I think of her ability to sing all type of songs. This is a club song as well as a ‘ drunk ‘ song. Lyricist and composers are again Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The golden era is coming to an end, with only a few old timer composers like L-P, Khaiyyam and R. D. Burman are still active and are able to keep pace with the changing times. But they are enough to take Lata and Asha to the next century, with addition of new age music directors like A. R. Rehman, Shiv Hari etc.
There are a few more songs to come in this series. We will dwell back to the Golden Era and not so golden era too for the remaining songs.
Coming back to the song, the biggest challenge must have been to make this song look believable on Hema Malini. Here she is pretending to be drunk and behaving badly, to convince Dharmendra that she does not love him and he should move on and leave her alone. I think she is being blackmailed by baddie in the film i.e. Prem Chopra, who is also the brother in law of Dharmendra. The film had a tragic end.
There are few more good songs from this film remaining to be posted, but all in good time. Meanwhile this is song is worth savouring for Lata Mangeshkar fans. This is the last song by her in this series.
As Anand Bakshi has said in the song :
Har aarzoo hai chhoti ye zindagi badi hai
For all her failings, she is huge in the field of playback singing, an institution in her own right, that all aspiring singers want to emulate. No, I will not say that she is the Sachin Tendulkar of film music, because she has no precedent and no successors.

Nahm ji,
Rightly said. Lata ji may have sung few club/cabaret song but enough to demonstrate her versatility as a great singer.
My fav is Aa jaan e jaan… from Inteqam-69 🙂

First line of last paragraph, the word I used is : Flailings . May be the plural is not so correct. Even flailing will do.
