‘Hanste Aansoo’ is a film from 1950 that has some wonderful songs by Mukesh. The film has a total of eleven songs, out of which five carry the voice of Mukesh. One song is solo, three are duets with different singers, and one is a group song which is rendered like a qawwaali. Of these, two songs viz., the Mukesh solo – “Qismat Mein Yehi Likha Thaa” and his duet with Rajkumari –“Maine Sapna Jo Dekha Hai Raat” are already posted here. I present today the third Mukesh song from this film, the qawwaali in which Mukesh is accompanied by the voices of Shamshad Begum and Mohammed Rafi.
There are two song writers who share the credits for the eleven songs –Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shewan Rizwi. This particular song is from the pen of Shewan Rizwi. The music is composed by Ghulam Mohammed. The cast of actors of this film includes Madhubala, Moti Lal, Gope, Manorama, Mirza Musharraf, Jankidas, Kapil and others. It would be interesting to know which actors have performed this qawwaali on screen. I request other knowledgeable readers to please help with more information about this song.
The song itself is a question and answer song. The question that is aksed is “What is love? And what is it like”. And then apparently three persons present their opinions about it. The qawwaali effect is brought in by the accompanying chorus. Quite a fun song – interesting words and music by Ghulam Mohammed.
