The Many Colors of Love #10 – The Euphoria of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

un se pyaar ho gaya
un se pyaar ho gaya
dil mera kho gaya
dil un ka kho gaya
dil dil se mil gaya

(‘Baadal’, 1951)

When the glances have crossed, when the hearts have fluttered, when the strings start strumming on their own, and when the mind wants to fly in the sky at the mention of a name. The emotions fill up the being. It seems as if the self is so happily eager to simply fly out of the body, that at times it is difficult to sit still.

Folks will recall with relish the song listed above. On screen it is performed by Madhubala. And my, what performance she has given of an anxious urgency inside that does not let her sit still. It is almost as if she is ready to fly out into the skies, singing the words at the top of her voice.

It matters not whether the person to whom these emotions are directed, is near. It is not even of concern that the person is aware, and whether is responsive. The emotion that emanates from within the self is one of the most delightful and yes, one of the most powerful emotions. The surge of this emotion gives the uplift and the wings, it gives the feeling of being able to fly, it gives that sensation for which the term coined is so appropriate – “the unbearable lightness of being”. And for the moments it lasts, there are no negatives in existence, there is no unhappiness in the world. Everything is in the pink of spring, and everything seems to be buoyed up with that lightness. Time seems to come to a halt, and it is always the calm of a clear spring morning, with a cozy sun shining, cottony clouds dispersed in the skies, ambling on their way across the horizon in a light cool breeze that is like a flower’s touch to the cheeks, the flowers emerging from their cocoons with a cheerful smile, spreading it across everything that is visible.

Ah well, of course you have to be in love to experience this imagery. 🙂 As I am sure many would. And once you experience it, you will be able to empathize with a poet, and understand where his lines are emerging from, where his words are getting crafted, and where is being engineered the flow that makes a good ghazal so adorable. Not only one will experience and empathize, many would be moved into picking up a pen, and composing that superlative verse that one would want to present to the beloved – well, not just present it but sing it out and serenade the person you love.

When this feeling emerges, one can relate to why Romeo would be singing under the balcony of Juliet’s home. Or why would Majnu be espousing the deepest philosophies, astounding the learned ones. Or why would Khusro be writing “Kaahe Ko Biyaahi Bides”. Or why is Diwakar compelled to create the lines

nadiyaa pahaad kar paar gori naar aayi
preetam ke dwaar abhisaar karne
bahiyon mein baandh apne preetam ki saadh lagi
praanon mein amrut sa pyaar bharne

(‘Navrang’, 1959)

It is this euphoria of love, the exhilaration of a jubilant emotion that cannot be explained. It is not the gratification of owning something or someone, it is not the pride of being attractive or the joy of being attracted to another. Neither is it the rapture of being with someone, nor the excitements of the feelings of touch. It is simply the ecstasy of having discovered – having unlocked a hidden chamber deep within the existent being, and letting loose this pleasure-ful flow of elation that soaks into every nerve and every pore of the body, giving this feeling of “unbearable lightness of being” – the euphoria of love.

The film ‘Pyaar Banaa Afsaana’ is an unreleased film from the 1960s. One of the many productions that get conceptualized, planned, even some work happens, and then it is simply shelved for reasons not known publicly. Generally when a film is planned and work is started, it is the music and the songs that get created first. And so, for these films that have remain unfinished, most of them have their songs already created and even recorded in some cases. ‘Pyaar Banaa Afsaana’ is one such film that has a good number of songs available on records. All the songs have been written by Aziz Qaisi and the music has been composed by Iqbal Qureshi. If the songs of ‘Love In Simla’ and the qawwaalis of ‘Qawwaali Ki Raat’ are any benchmark to go by, then one can expect some great songs in this set of records. And the expectation is borne out really very well. Sample today’s song from this film, in the voice of Asha Bhosle, and you will get a flavor of what to expect from the rest of the songs of this incomplete film. I will be posting more from this film in the coming weeks.

A lovely song that expresses the onset of this euphoria of love, as someone special has entered the life, and suddenly everything in life is so changed, so becoming, so acceptable. Asha ji has rendered this with such verve and so much vitality. Just listening to this will make you want to dance along – there is so much life and elation and rhythm in this creation. Simply lovely.

Love is, so life is. And love is, so life is beautiful. Enjoy this emotion.

Song-Mere jahaan mein tum pyaar leke aaye (Pyaar Bana Afsaana)(UR)(1960) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Aziz Qaisi, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics

mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aaye ho qaraar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aaye ho qaraar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye

jee uthhi hoon aahat bahaar ki sun ke
aji sun sun ke
naachti hoon khushiyon ke phool chun chun ke
aji chun chun ke
bheegi bheegi rut ka khumaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye

jhoomti hoon mein teri yaad se mil ke
aji mil mil ke
aaj zindagi hans rahi hai khil khil ke
o ji khil khil ke
nazron mein ras ki phuhaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye

bas gaye ho dhadkan mein zindagi ban ke
aji ban ban ke
meri preet dulhan bani hai ban tthan ke
aji ban tthan ke
meethe meethe sapnon ke haar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
pyaar le ke aayee ho qaraar le ke aaye
mere jahaan mein tum pyaar le ke aaye

I had heard this song on the radio many times in my younger days but did not know that it was from an unreleased film. Thanks for posting the song.

Yes, the song is a typical Iqbal Qureshi flavour.

Your poetic expression of the sweetest emotions is worth appreciation as it made a very good reading.
