My first introduction to ‘ghazals’ came about in 1986. Before that it was all ‘songs’, ‘sad songs’ or ‘slow songs’ for me. In 1985-86 I had taken up a job and my boss was a Punjabi from Chandigarh. He was fond of ghazals and I was fond of old Hindi film songs. My boss had with him a good collection of audio cassettes of ghazals by Mehedi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh and others. Impressed by my awareness of the old Hindi film songs he asked me to list out and compile old songs (singer wise, actor/actress wise) and get them recorded on cassettes (Sony, TDK cassettes mostly).
So from time to time my boss would give me the assignments of preparing compilations of songs for singers or music directors or actors/actresses. At that time blank audio cassettes of TDK and Sony were in demand and T ‘series had started making inroads into this field.
We were at Parli-Vaijnath then (a small town in Marathwada region of Maharashtra). The town was only a few months old for me as I had shifted from Vidarbha region there, and had straightway taken up a job there. So I had no friends there and the only place that I visited regularly was a ‘music centre’ which had a huge collection of LP records. The shop owner there soon became a good friend of mine and till date he is the only person other than my family members and close ones whom I can cite as my friend there.
My hand writing was also good at that time (now it is good with the key-board only) so I started getting to write songs in the registers maintained at this music center and indexing film wise songs and other compilations.
Due to this I became aware of all the songs available at the center and sometimes if the operator had a problem in responding to the queries of his customers then I was readily available to come to his rescue and I could even help out in locating the records and cassettes or locating the details in the registers.
On weekly offs generally I passed the whole day at this music center and enjoyed the great Indian music including the instrumentals also ( ‘sounds of valleys’), and the classical and regionals.
Coming back to ghazals, I got to listen to ghazals of various singers like Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Ashok Khosla, Chandan Das, Talat Aziz, Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh from my boss’s collection. Every new release then was awaited eagerly and grabbed as early as possible.
It was all a new experience for me then. I also discovered the huge treasure of the ‘velvet voice’ Talat Mehmood then. Until then ‘raahi matwaale …’ was my favorite, which I used to listen to daily on All India Radio.
Wondering, why I am talking about ghazals today? , no no … today is not the ‘Ghazal’ day.
But the song under discussion today has been better known to us as a ‘ghazal’ sung by Jagjit Singh. And until a few months back I did not know that this ghazal was included in a film and sung by none other than Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on whether this film song came first, or whether Jagjit Singh’s ghazal with the same mukhda came earlier.(I think it was Jagjit Singh’s ghazal that came earlier).

I came to know of Jagjit Singh first when I heard this ghazal in my younger days. Obviously, this ghazal was first sung by Jagjit Singh and it was included in his LP album ‘The Unforgettables’ (1976).
In the filmy version, the poet’s takhallus ‘Ameer’ in the maqta (last she’r ) of the ghazal is replaced with the word ‘meraa’ in the first verse..
By the way, this ghazal is also sung by Asha Bhonsle for her album “Asha’ (2005).

Yes, after Kamath Sir’s post on 8th Feb, it was cleared to me that Jagjit ji’ s ghazal came first, the post is an earlier one and these lines needs to be edited, which has been missed out by me.

Never heard this KK version before. I was aware of only JS’s version, which is my fav.

Dear Atul Ji,
In my mind, there is no confusion about this matter.
This Ghazal written by Ameer Minai was popularised by Maestro Jagjit Singh and included in his album in the year 1975.
As you have noted, the film ‘Deedar -e- yaar’ was released in 1982.
So naturally your conclusion that it was preceded by Jagjit Singh’s version is correct.
