Many day to day activities, that many of us take for granted used to be (still is) very important household chores. One such activity is/ was bringing water. These days, many homes have water taps where they get water supplied from their municipal corporation and the householders need not go out of their homes to fetch water. But we still have a sizeable population who have to go out to bring water (either at community water taps, or at private or community wells/ tubewells, or at rivers/ ponds. This activity is mainly the preserve of womenfolk. and while these ladies are at it, they obviously exchange the latest gossips among themselves.
Hindi movies, especially of the golden era exploited this opprtunity to the hilt. The leading lady would be shown going out to the local well/ river with her sahelis. The sahelis would tease the leading lady about the love in her life. Sometimes, even this love would be at hand to tease the leading lady.
Here is a delightful “panghat” song from “Pyaar Ki Jeet” (1948). This song is sung by Suraiyya, Surinder Kaur and Meena Kapoor. In this song, it is the ladies who seem to tease their lovers for a change.
Only the audio of this song is available. Seeing that this movie( a Famous Pictures production, directed by O P Datta) had Rehman, Suraiya, Gope, Gyani, Raj Mehra, Manorama, Leela Misra, Yashodhara Katju, Niranjan Sharma etc in it, my guess is that this song could have been picturised on Suraiyya, Manorama (lip syncing in Surinder Kaur’s voice) and Yashodhara Katju (lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice). I am not sure about the actress lip syncing in Meena Kapoor’s voice, though. Incidentally, this movie had another song sung by the same threee singers.
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Its a mouth watering triple treat. It seems panghat is short of watering hole for them.
