“Sanjog” (1943) was one of first movies based on the story of mistaken identities. The details of this movie were provided by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia. Here are the deials of this movie as provided by him:
SANJOG-43 was based on mistaken identity, a favourite topic of movie makers since then till today !
Deepak (Charlie) applies as a Secretary to the Maharaja of Pahadgunj. He is called there. When he reaches there, he is mistaken for Capt.Surendra(Anwar Hussain), the Son in law designate of the maharaja(A.Shah). He is taken to the palace along with his side kick Jugal Kishore (Wasti). The princess Bina Kumari(Mehtab) meets him and starts loving him. They spend good times together.
Meanwhile, the real Capt.Surendra reaches there and is mistaken as an applicant for secretary’s post. He is asked to wait. He is angry and goes away.
There are many comic situations in the film. Finally, when the secret is exposed, the Princes saves Charlie and they get married.
In this film, Suraiya, who does not act in the film, gave playback to Mehtab once again. She had started with playback to Mehtab in her career.
Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie.
This song is sung by Shyam Kumar. It is picturised aboard a train. Based on the story mentioned above, my guess is that Wasti and Charlie are escaping from Pahadganj by train and this song is lip synced by Wasti. I request our knowledgeable readers to confirm/ refute my hunch.
D N MadhokProf Waqif is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Jaan bachi so laakhon paaye (Sanjog)(1943) singer-Shyam Kumar, Lyrics-Prof Waqif, MD-Naushad
Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)
jaan bachi
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
laut ke budhu ghar ko aaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
bhali huyi jo saste chhoote
nahin to ae mahaaraj
bhali huyi jo saste chhoote
nahin to aye mahaaraj
hum hote aur ghoomar ghoomar
jail ki chakki aaj
hum hote aur ghoomar ghoomar
jail ki chakki aaj
aisi khatir bhaad mein jaaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
jaan bachi
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
lautke budhu ghar ko aaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
shaan se pit’te joote khakar
wahin jo rehte aaj
shaan se pit’te joote khakar
wahin jo rehte aaj
aakhir ulfat rang hi laati
beda hota paar
aakhir ulfat rang hi laati
beda hota paar
moorakh hai jo ab pachhtaaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
jaan bachi
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
lautke budhu ghar ko aaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye
baanke aashiq jeb hai khaali
roti ko mohtaaj
baanke aashiq jeb hai khaali
roti ko mohtaaj
wahi masal hai ganguwa teli
khwaab mein dekhe raaj
wahi masal hai ganguwa teli
khwaab mein dekhe raaj
aankh khuli to joote khaaye
jaan bachi so laakhon paaye

Your hunch is hunchtastic. I have seen the movie and I enjoyed thoroughly several times on Hathway(Service Provider). It laugh-riot. Charlie is unbeatable. You look at him and you have to laugh; no way out.
