“Sargam”(1979) was produced by N N Sippy and directed by K Vishwanath. The movie was a remake of Telugu hit movie called “Siri Siru Muvva” (1976) starring Jayaprada and Chandramohan.
Today (3 april 2014) is the 52nd birth anniversary of Jaya Prada (3 april 1962). That makes her an actress in my age group. Going by her date of birth she must have been 17 when “Sargam” (1979) was released and just 14 when “Siri Siri Muvva” (1976) was released. She did not look all that young in these movies so she may in reality be a few years older, I feel. To put things in perspective, try to look at the pictures of cricketer Ravi Shastri (DOB 27 may 1962 and therefore one month younger to Jayaprada), when he made his test debut in 1981. He looked quite baby faced at 19. Or perhaps females mature faster than males.
“Sargam” (1979) had Rishi Kapoor, Jayaprada, Dr.Shri Ram Lagoo, Shashikala, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani,
Vijay Arora, Asrani, Dheeraj Kumar, Asrani, Kesto Mukherjee, Leela Mishra, Om Shivpuri, Rajni Shrma, Janki Das, Kamaldeep, Babbanlal Yadav, Trilok Kapoor, Uma Khosla, Baby Dimple, Yusuf, Raju, Jeet Mohan, Ramdas Malthane etc in it.
Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
On the occasion of Jaya Prada’s birth anniversary today, here is a song from “Sargam” (1979), which was her debut movie in Hindi.
She plays a dumb girl in this movie who is passionate about dancing. Logically there should not be any songs lip synced by her in this movie but Indian movies always have some ways of circumventing logic. In this movie, Jayaprada is shown fantasising whenever a song and dance situation is required to be introduced in the movie. All her songs in the movie are “fantasy” songs.
This song is sung by Lata and Rafi and it is picturised as a fantasy song on Jaya Prada and Rishi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

koyal boli
duniyaa doli
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
ho ho ho
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
dil duniyaa mein
farq hai kitnaa
tu hai kitni bholi ho ho
koyal boli duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
iss dil ke dhokhe mein reh lo o
kuchch bhi sunn lo
kuchch bhi keh lo o
iss dil ke dhokhe mein reh lo o
kuchch bhi sunn lo
kuchch bhi keh lo o
raag binaa na kheli jaaye
iss jeevan ki holi
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
oopar ambar neeche zameen hai
itnaa badaa ghar koi nahin hai
oopar ambar neeche zameen hai
itnaa badaa ghar koi nahin hai
phool pawan baadal panchhi ye
sab apne humjoli ho ho o
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
dekho hans do dil na todo
main khush hoon
tum meraa saath na chhodo
dekho hans do dil na todo
main khush hoon
tum meraa saath na chhodo
teraa saath main chhodoongaa
par bhej ke teri doli
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
samjho dil ki boli
dil duniyaa mein
farq hai kitnaa
tu hai kitni bholi ho ho
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
koyal boli
duniyaa doli
koyal boli
duniyaa doli

hullo Atul
I protest how dare you say she looks older than her 17 years. actually it is the focus on indianised dressing that made these ladies look older than their age. ask any 17 year actress or girl of present day to wear that kind of Half- Sari or sari itself and they will flatly refuse.
actually my Peevesie and me have all along been noting how the actresses of yesteryears used to take pains to dress up and look older than their age. and add to it their buffont and other hair-dos the grown up look came to them automatically.
point number two…..
she doesn’t lip sync in this song, but does it with actions which Rishi Kapoor understands her by 🙂

She could not have been 17 in ‘Sargam’ anyway. Some dates are mixed up. She was working in Kannada films before she came to hindi films.
