“Shaadi” (1941) was directed by Jayant Desai for Ranjeet Movietone. The movie had Madhuri, Moti Lal, Khurshid, Ishwar Lal, Dixit, Ghori, Bhagwan Das, Kanti Lal, Bhoopat Rai, Tara Bai, Brijmala, Keshari, Baby Kamla etc in it.
Today (18 april 2014) is the thirteenth death anniversary of Khursheed Bano (14 april 1914-18 april 2001). On this special occasion, here is a song from “Shaadi” (1941). Only the audio of this song is available, but it is clear that the song was picturised on her as well.
Though this movie had two lyricists, viz. DN Madhok and Munshi Dil but it is not known which of them wrote this song. Music is composed by Khemchand Prakash.
This is a superbly sung song from an artist who was a legend of her time and who could hold her own as an actor-singer opposite K L Saigal as she proved in “Bhakt Surdas”(1942) and Tansen (1943) where she played the female lead opposite K L Saigal. In this movie “Shaadi”(1941), she sang superb songs of different moods. “Meri Aankhen”(1939), “Beti” (1941), “Pardesi”(1941), “Bhakt Surdas”(1942), “Chaandni” (1942), :Nurse”(1943), “Prabhu Ka Ghar” (1945), “Moorti” (1945), “Mumtaz Mahal” (1944), “Maharana Pratap” (1946),”Aage Badho” (1947), “Majhdhaar” (1947), “Mitti” (1947) are some of the movies where she sang and acted. Her songs like Asha sukh ke khel khilaaye (Meri Aankhen),Panchhi baawra chaand se preet lagaaye (Bhakt surdas), Madhur madhur gaa re manwa (Bhakt surdas), Ab raaja bhaye more baalam wo din bhool gaye(Tansen), Barso re barso re (Tansen), Jala patang to ismein qusoor kiska hai (Mumtaz Mahal), badariya baras gayi us paar (Moorti)(1945), ae chaand nazar na lagaana (Moorti), Ambuwaa pe koyal boley (Moorti), Jhoom raha hai mera man (Aage Badho) are just a few of her songs that have been discussed in this blog. 44 of her songs have been covered in the blog in the past. I eagerly look forward to the day when we will have a century of her songs in the blog. That will give me as much satisfaction as I got when we completed a century of Khemchand Prakash’s songs in the blog. Like Khemchnad Prakash, Khursheed Bano was active in the pre indepence era and as such she did not get to sing as many songs as many of her successors in the post independence era. Moreover, she was an actor-Singer and as such she only sang for herself. So the number of her songs are limited by the number of movies that she acted in. In my subjective judgement, she was the biggest and most talented among the female actor- singers of 1940s. Partition of the country saw her migrate to Pakistan. And that was a lose lose proposition for all, in my opinion. That way, the lyrics of this song sound rather poignantly appropriate for her, as she has been by and large forgotten by the music lovers of Hindi movie music.
Khursheed Bano has not yet reached her century in the blog, but this post marks another century for the blog. This song is the seven hudredth lyrics contribution by Nitin Shah in the blog. A remarkable feat indeed. I take this opportunity to congratulate him on the behalf of the blog. And seeing that most of his contributions are from 1940s and 1950s, his lyrics are enabling us to relive and revisit the golden era and the pre golden era of Hindi movie music. Here is hoping that he scored many more centuries in the blog as this blog continues to explore the vast ocean of Hindi movie music.

Song-Bhoolne waale…ae dil kahaan le jaaun (Shaadi)(1941) Singer-Khursheed, MD-Khemchand Prakash
Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)
bhoolne waale
bhoolne waaale
bhulaane se bhi yaad aate hai
dard ban ke meri nas nas mein
chubhe jaate hain
ae dil kahaan le jaaun oon oon
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ab kaun thhikaana hai
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ab kaun thhikaana hai
apne na huye apne
ye kaisa zamaana hai
apne na huye apne
ye kaisa zamaana hai
bijli mein ho posheeda aa
toofaan qayaamat ka
aa aa aa
bijli mein ho posheeda aa
toofaan qayaamat ka
aa aa aa
hansna bhi to duniya mein ae ae
hansna bhi to duniya mein
rone ka bahaana hai
hansna bhi to duniya mein
rone ka bahaana hai
phir aankh bhar aayi hai
phir yaad teri aayi
phir aankh bhar aayi hai ae ae
phir yaad teri aayi
ee ee ee ee ee
ye geet hain dardeeley ae ae
ye geet hain dardeeley
ye raag rulaana hai
ye geet hain dardeeley
ye raag rulaana hai
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ae dil kahaan le jaaun
ab kaun thhikaana hai
apne na huye apne
ye kaisa zamaana hai

Thanks Bharatbhai for filling you up with Suraiya. I do my business for few hours and then back to musical duniya.
In fact you are 24×7 on musical mehfil. You have few hard disks with terabytes or is it petabytes full of HFM except Mahendra Kapoor songs which is anathema for him. Still you are at it. Great.
Regarding Khursheed songs I am trying to send the complement songs of hers. She had a very crystal clear and sweet voice. aawaz me souz hai, saaz hai. One of my fav.
phir aankh bhar aayi hai
phir yaad teri aayi
ye geet hain dardeeley
ye raag rulaana hai
ye geet hain dardeeley…
