Returning once again to 1950, to capture this absolute riot of an eccentric qawwaali. Very clear that a bunch of young men are having a complete time out and the result of the fun being had is expressed in such outlandish verses that say
us waqt khushi se dil mera
aankhon mein utarne lagta hai
jab kaali surat par wo
makeup lagaa kar nakhraa karte hain
and
ae meri mohabbat ki motor
garij se nikal kar road pe aa
This very rare creation, and acquired with some real legwork, is from the film ‘Pagle’ 1950. The words have been crafted by Anujum Rehmani. The music and the comic melody is created by Snehal Bhatkar, whose name in the credits of this film appears as VG Bhatkar. (Note: Music director Vasudev G Bhatkar aka Snehal Bhatkar, is on the record with using as many as 8 name variations during his career.) The singing voices are , yes – Khan Mastana, Mukesh and GM Durrani. Incidentally, this is only an audio, but we do have info about on screen performance. The qawwaali is performed on the screen by Jagirdar, Agha and Sherry. Goodness, I would love to track down the video of this film, just to see Jagirdar doing the hand clapping and singing such an oddball song. Nine years earlier to this film, Gajanan Jagirdar made an indelible mark on the film history with his portrayal of the grey haired grandfather character of ‘Mirza’ in the 1941 film ‘Padosi’. Hearing this qawwaali, I am so keen to see how the same Jagirdar would be performing this zestful song.
‘Pagle’ of 1950 is from the banner of Mercury Productions, directed by Pratima Dasgupta. The list of actors includes Begum Para, Madhuri,
Jagirdar, Pratima Devi, Mubarak, David, Kukku, Agha Jaan, Sherry. The nine song of this film have come from the pens of three poets – Anjum Rehmani, Behzaad Lucknavi and Kaabil Amritsari.
Alas, one part of the information that we do not have is which performer has lip synced which singer’s voice. But I assure you, the search for this song, and its eventual acquisition from a friend, has been worth all the wait and the effort. And I am sure you will agree, once you listen to this rare combination of voices, in an oddball qawwaali that is now available online.
This is a longish song, almost 6 minutes in duration. Understandably, this appears on two sides of the 78 rpm record. As the qawwaali plays, you can make out a brief silence as the audio changes from side one to side two.
I must acknowledge the help and the information provided by Harish ji Raghuvanshi. The three Mukesh songs of ‘Pagle’ are not included in the
original Mukesh Geet Kosh. It was because of Harish ji that I became aware of ‘Pagle’ as another film for which songs have been recorded in Mukesh’s voice. And he prodded me to search for the missing songs. One of them “Kyun Shikwa Karen, Kyun Aah Bharen” has been posted here much earlier. Then the second song “Hoye Tere Bina Chain Kahaan Balmaa” has
been posted earlier this year as part of this series. And now, the third and arguably the most interesting qawwaali song is now being presented.
