One of my pet grouses against Hindi movies is that they do not lay stress on working for a living. Hindi movies show people either romancing their beloved or singing sad songs when separated by the beloved. And those who do not indulge in such activities are shown remonstrating with the almighty for their misfortune. Hindi movie characters are rarely shown working for their living.
There is a ray of hope in this dark tunnel of non workers though. And this bright ray of hope is none other than Mehmood ! Most people love Mehmood for his slapstick brand of comedy, but I look deeper than that and I find that Mehmood is mostly shown earning an honest living while performing his comedy roles whereas most other characters in the movie continue to be slackers on this count.
If one recalls Mehmood’s roles, one finds that he played a butler in “Gumnaam” (1965) who was the only person working for a living in the whole movie. Same was the case in “Padosan” (1968) where he played a music teacher. In “Bombay to Goa”(1971), he plays a bus conductor, whereas he is a kabaadiwaala in “Neelkamal” (1968).
Here is a song from “Miyaan Biwi Raazi” (1960). The song shows Mehmood as a roadside hawker who invites his prospective customers to have a look at his wide range of goods.
This nice song is sung by Rafi. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Sir,
Plenty of ‘Duaa’ is the ultimate requirement and it is what one desires for all of us.
This reminds me of one incident from school days.
I was in 4th or 5th standard and was walking home from school. A beggar was sitting on the footpath, I gave him some coin. Immediately he started saying lot of blessings. The only one I remember among those is ‘ your father will have two taxis ‘. It came true partially, as my father did own a car which was a taxi earlier.
Thanks a lot for your prayers and wishes. And may the Almighty bless you and your family too.
nahm.
