The mention of this name brings to mind, the mindless sidelining and disregard of talent that was ever the most gifted and capable. But that is life – the unfortunate unkindness it metes out to some people is beyond our intelligence to understand. Comes to mind the lines of Meera Bai’s bhajan –

Koel Kar Dini Kaali
Santo, Karman Ki Gati Nyaari

That the Koel bird is endowed with such a beautiful voice that is incomparable, but the same Maker also made it black and ugly, such are the vagaries of destiny.

In case of music director Vinod, this aberration becomes even more distressing. Life turned out to be very short, and so did a gifted career, that was curtailed by the most unfortunate of a petty and mundane event. A cut to the skin while shaving, resulted in a mortal sepsis that ended his life at just 37. Born in 1922, the unexpected and shocking end came in 1959. A career that started in 1946, ended abruptly in just fourteen years. Fourteen years of struggle which saw him create a little over 185 priceless melodies for 26 films, two of which did not see the light of the projectors. On one hand we have an artist whose melodies capture the imagination of the listening public, and on the other we have this sad background of a short life, a disregarded career and an ignored gifted human being. The heart wants to speculate the alternatives – “Yun Hota To Kya Hota” (what if things would have been different). But that is a meaningless exercise – for life is such, and it is what it is.

Remembering Vinod today, with this post that celebrates his century milestone on this blog. Which means that more than half of his creations are already showcased here.

They say that in this world, it is extremely difficult to live up to a reputation. However, it also needs to be contemplated – it is equally challenging to live down a reputation. In the year 1949 (the year of golden magic in Hindi film music in my opinion), the number of superlative and outstanding melodies and the number of popular songs from this single year is simply astounding. Both the old and the new music directors, singers and lyricists got together to make this the most memorable of the musical years ever. In this bevy of timeless melodies, the one melody that literally became the “gali gali mein goonjne waala geet” (song that was played in practically every lane, street and home) is the song created by Vinod for the film ‘Ek Thi Ladki’ – “Laara Lappa Laara Lappa Laai Rakhdaa”. We can debate and discuss whether it was the simplicity of words, or it was the catchy arrangement and rhythm, or it was the sentiment that caught the fancy of the new generation of office goers. Whatever, it was, it created an incomparable reputation for Vinod, that made his name well known. But in the industry, this is also a danger, because the mindless industry will immediately pass the judgment and typecast the artist. That straitjacket is a difficult life to maneuver.

The talent and the variety of his musical capabilities is well represented in his body of work. And yet, his talent was relegated to B/C class films and within that, for just comedies. Being typecast, and in addition, not having a godfather in the industry, is a misfortune that has befallen many a talent in the history of this industry. And so it happened with Vinod also. Forever, he was known as the “Laara Lappa” musician, and no one paid attention to the beauty and delicacy of his creations in the next year for the film ‘Anmol Ratan’ (1950). With songs based on classical ragas, this film showcases some of the most beautiful creations by him – “Jab Kisi Ke Rukh Pe Zulfen Aa Kar Lehraane Lagi” in the voice of Talat, “Laakhon Mein Ek Hamaare Sainyyaan” in the voice of Nirmala Devi, “Dard Milaa Hai Tere Pyaar Ki Nishaani” in the voice of Lata, “Yaad Aane Waale Phir Yaad Aa Rahe Hain”, a duet in the voices of Talat and Lata – these songs are fabulous gems in their own right.

These and many more lovely creations from his mind simply could not pull him away from his typecast image. A sampling of the names of his movies from mid to late 1950s tell the story all by themselves. ‘Oot Pataang’ in 1955, ‘Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo’ also in 1955, ‘Sheikh Chilli’ in 1956, ‘Garma Garam’ in 1957, tell the tale that is funny and sad at the same time. Not that the music was of any low eminence. Just listen to the title song of ‘Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo’ in the voice of Asha Bhosle and you will know. If there is a fun duet in ‘Garma Garam’ that says “Jab Jeb Ho Garam Garam” (in the voice of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle), there is also the melancholia of “Mere Sainyyaan Ne Diye Mujhe Laakh Laakh Gham” and the emotional beauty of “Aaye Hain Dwaare Tihaare Reham Karo Raaja, Na Todo Jiyara”, both in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Or take the film ‘Laadlaa’ (1954). There are fun tunes like “Haaye Re Baj Gaye Raat Ke Baarah” (in the voice of Rafi and Shamshad) and “Jal Tu Jalaal Tu, Aayi Balaa Ko Taal Tu” in the voice of GM Durrani, then there is also the peerless and endearing love duet “Pyaar Nahin Chhupta Chhupaane Se” in the voices of Talat and Asha Bhosle.

For today’s occasion, I present here a song that is significant in some ways. For one, Talat Sb has probably sung only three solos under the baton of Vinod. Two of them are already present in this blog. The incomparable sadness of “Ek Dil Hazaar Gham” from ‘Aag Ka Dariyaa’ (1953) and the tragic expression of “Ho Gaye Barbaad Hum, Unki Khushi To Hi Gayi” are hallmark renditions in this velvet voice. But the third solo, from the film ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ (1957) is a telling expression of an exuberant heart that is a song of cheerful enthusiasm. Another signature creation by Vinod, the verses of the song might as well were written for the music director himself. For these verses well describe what Vinod could do with his instruments and his melodies. That is the other significant reason I choose to present this song today. Just sample the lines

jab kaanon mein ras gholoon main
patthar ka but bhi boley
mausam ko mast banaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon
main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon

when the sweet nectar of my melodies
flows into the ears
even the statues are roused to speech
(my music)
puts cheer and spirit into spring
I sing the songs of love, I do
playing on the strings of heart

Oh what a lovely creation, what a beautiful gem this one is. The voice of Talat Sb adds to the glory of this melody.

The film is produced under the banner of Nigam Films and is directed by Ram Daryaani. The cast of actors includes Sheela Ramani, Jairaj, Agha, Veena, Umesh, Heera Sawant, Samson, G M Durrani, Mini, Uma Dutt, Nazeer Kashmiri etc. There are seven songs in this film that come from the pens of Hasrat, Kaif Irfani and Pt Priyadarshi. This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri.

Listen to this spirited and enlivening expression of cheerfulness and zest. And wonder.

Enjoy.

Song-Main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon(Mumtaz Mahal)(1957) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon
main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon

ye husn bhi aankhen khole
aur ishq ka dil bhi doley
o o o o o
ye husn bhi aankhen khole
aur ishq ka dil bhi doley
jab kaanon mein ras gholoon main
jab kaanon mein ras gholoon main
patthhar ka but bhi boley
mausam ko mast banaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon
main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon

bulbul bhi suney to jhoome
aur phool ka mukhda choome
bulbul bhi suney to jhoome
aur phool ka mukhda choome
har dil mein
pyaar jagaa doon main
har dil mein
pyaar jagaa doon main
aankhon mein tassavur ghoome

duniya ka dil tadpaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon
main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon
chaahat ke nagme gaata hoon
main dil ka saaz bajaata hoon
