Remembering Talat Mehmood on his 88th birth anniversary today, the 24th of February.
The moon generally does not venture out during the daytime. For if it does, then no one can see it, and no one would pay any attention – for daytime is the time of the sun. No matter however enchanting the moon may seem by itself, daytime is not the time for it.
A superb gem of a melody, and an absolutely delightful rendition by Talat Saab – but a melody that escaped much attention for it got released in the same year as ‘Ae Dil Mujhe Aisi Jageh Le Chal’ from the film ‘Aarzoo’. The year is 1950. The said song from film ‘Aarzoo’, set to music by Anil Biswas and picturized on Dilip Kumar, became rage with the listening public and a major hit for that year. And in that glory, this lesser heard melody got overshadowed.
Having gained immense popularity with his non film ghazals, especially the 1944 release ‘Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behlaa Na Sakegi’, the young and handsome Talat Mahmood arrived in Calcutta to start a career in the film industry. In the years from 1944 to 1948, he sang for and acted in Bengali films, under the name Tapan Kumar. He did three Bengali films during these years. At the same time, he also started working with production banners based in Bombay. In 1945 he acted and sang two songs in the film Raj Lakshmi. Then in 1947, he appeared in the film ‘Tum Aur Mein’, this time under the name Tapan Kumar. But it was 1949 that he started to sing as playback for other actors also. This year saw the release of the film ‘Samapti’, in which he appeared. And besides, he also sang for the films ‘Raakhi’, and ‘Swayamsiddha’. And then came 1950 and film ‘Aarzoo’ that took him to heights of popularity.
The film ‘Anmol Ratan’, also released in 1950, was produced under the banner of Gemini Dewan Productions, Bombay, and directed by M Sadiq. The main star cast in the film is Meena Kumari, Karan Dewan, Gope, Gulab, Madan Puri, Nirmala etc. The songs in this film are written by DN Madhok, and the music is by Vinod, the wonderful young composer from Punjab. In this film, Talat Saab sang two solo songs and two duets with Lata. Since only the audio of this song available, I can only make a guess that this ghazal would have been picturized on Karan Dewan. I request other knowledgeable readers to please confirm or correct this guess, and also to add more information about this film.
The words, they are exquisite. The melody, it is simply sublime. And the voice – on listening this wonderful ghazal, one can understand why his voice is compared with a touch of velvet. Listen and enjoy this vintage Talat sound, and feel the velvet in his voice.
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen aa ke lehraane lagi
hasraten utth utth ke armaanon se takraane lagi
As the tresses caressed and played
With her face, her cheeks
The intense longings in the heart
Arose and vied with the desires in the mind
mil gayeen aankhon se aankhen bhool se ya jaan kar
wo bhi sharmaane lagey aur wo bhi sharmaane lagi
As the eye met
Maybe per-chance
Or may be on purpose
She blushed self-consciously
And the eyes, they timidly withdrew
dard jo paidaa huaa hai dil mein dil kaise kahe
dhadkane dil ki kahaani dil ko samjhaane lagi
How can heart tell about
The aching that emanates in the heart
The throbbing heartbeats
Explained this tale to the heart
Song-Jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen aake lehraane lagin (Anmol Ratan)(1950) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Vinod
Lyrics
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaaa aaa
aaa aaa aaaa
aaa aaa aaa
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
haaan
hasraten uthh uthh ke
armaanon se takraane lagin
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
mil gayeen aankhon se aankhen
mil gayeen aankhon se aankhen
bhool se
ya jaan kar
bhool se ya jaan kar
wo bhi sharmaane lagey
haaye
wo bhi sharmaane lagey
aur wo bhi sharmaane lagi
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
aa ke lehraane lagin
dard jo paidaa huaa hai
ae ae
dard jo paidaa huaa hai
dil mein
dil kaise kahe
kaise kahe
dhadkanen dil ki kahaani
dhadkanen dil ki kahaani
dil ko samjhaane lagi
jab kisi ke rukh pe zulfen
aa ke lehraane lagin
