One of the earliest articles in the blog that gave me immense satisfaction was the article on the song “Din hai suhaana aaj pehli taareekh hai”. This song, that brings back nostalgia big time for people growing up in 1960s and 1970s is from “Pahli Taareekh” (1954) and it was played on Radio Ceylon (later SLBC) on the first day of every month. Listening to this song on the first day of every month in the “puraani filmon ke geet” programme was a divine experience. One needed to live in that era to savour it. Those who could never savour it because they were not born then, I can only say-tough luck. Better luck next time. 🙂

By the turn of this century, later generations had come up who were not aware of this song. Then a TV advertisement of a chocoloate came up in 2008 which used the lyrics of this song. And that is how people became curious about the original song.

This song had become a rare song by then and this song was not available on YT when I discussed it on 1 september 2008. Many people (including some well known music lovers and bloggers ) listened to this song for the first time in this blog.

It was some sixteen months later that I received a mail in my email account.

I just posted a comment on your songaday blog seeking your ID and then after some more diligent surfing got this ID from your wordpress humour blog. I hope this ID is still active.

Like you, I too am in my 40’s and I love film songs and used to be an avid movie goer in my school/college days.

I am thoroughly impressed at your diligence in searching out the golden oldies! I have benefitted from this myself when I copied your lyrics of Kishore’s “Aaj pehli taarikh hai” in a piece on my blog. I did intimate you then that I was taking your words and I even have quoted this on my post.

I have written a lot on my blog on the joys of movies and of late I have written some stuff around Hindi songs as well. I was wondering if I could share these pieces with you. Pardon my intrision into your time.

Here are some of my posts which I hope you like.

I propose to do a series on theme-based film songs, just like the one on birds above. Wonder if I could draw upon your blog for this. This would of course be duly acknowledged.

Santosh Ojha

Though it was not “pehli taareekh” but the contents of the e mail made my day nevertheless. I went through the links provided in the email and had a whale of a time reading those articles. The take of Santosh Ojha on the “Pehli taareekh” song with his first hand experiences of Jamshedpur of 1970s is the best article that I have read on this song. It is an article that is supersaturated with nostalgic stuff. I was so impressed that I went through all the articles that he had written. These articles were written on subjects that I readily identified with.

It was a privilege for us when he agreed to write guest posts for the song blog and came up with some absolutely wonderful writeups. His writeups on songs invariably had his firsthand account of how he watched the movie that the song belonged to. And reading these first hand accounts bring immense joys to the readers as can be guaged from the comments on these articles.

Santosh Ojha is from the same age group as I am and he grew up in Jamshedpur, while I was growing up in Ranchi at the same time. His father was a distinguished scholar who was a college lecturer in Jamshedpur and later went on to become the Principal of a local college in Jamshedpur.

Movie watching, listening to radio, reading books and magazines, eating fruits-these were the biggest pleasures in life than an Indian teenager growing up in small time Indian town could aspire to, and Santosh Ojha lived his teenage life to the fullest savouring all that and more. 🙂

His movie watching exploits in Jamshedpur and later Nagpur, some of which have been shared in the blog, did not affect his academics much. He cracked the JEE and got admission in IT-BHU where he did B Tech in Metallurgical Engineering and then he did Management in Marketing from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute, Mumbai. Informations available indicate that he continued to watch movies in his inimitable style till his stay in IT BHU. I am not aware whether he continued to be the same movie watching buff or he mellowed down after he “grew up”. 🙂

The siblings of Santosh Ojha are also movie and music lovers. One of them is a huge Kishore Kumar fan. He had a big collection of Kishore Kumar songs that he got copied in two CDs and shared them among his close acquaintances. I was among those privileged few who received those two CDs, containing over five hundred Kishore Kumar songs.

Santosh Ojha is a man of many talents, of course. He has written indepth articles on diverse topics, viz favourite Hindi short stories, English poetry, Durga Puja in Jamshedpur, Learning Bangla in Jamshedpur, Learning Telugu later, travelogues… and also on diverse uses of a rubber band. 🙂

He was in Bangalore when we in the blog became acquaited with him while I was at Nagpur. Things have changed a great deal since them. I have moved 400 km east to another -pur, whereas Santosh Ojha has moved four thousand kilometers to the far east, Hongkong to be precise, leaving his family (wife and two teenaged sons)behind in India. He has become extremely busy ever since. His own blogging in his blog has come to a standstill since then. Marketing world’s gain has been HFM bloggers’ loss. We have missed reading new articles in his blog as well as in this blog.

Santosh Ojha is a big Amitabh Bachchan fan. Most of his articles in the blog dealt with movies that Amitabh Bachchan starred in. On the distaff side, Rekha is his favourite leading lady. So it is only appropriate that I should discuss a song featuring both hot favourites of Santosh Ojha. Here is an archtypical Amitabh-Rekha song from “Suhaag” (1979). This song is sung with gusto by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha with the finesse that one had come to expect in a Manmohan Desai movie.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Song-Athra baras ki tu hone ko aayi re(Suhaag)(1979) Singers-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

athhrah baras ki tu hone ko aayi re
athhrah baras ki tu hone ko aayi re
kaun poochhega aa aa aa
jatan kuchh kar le
sajan kar le ae
jatan kuchh kar le
khaali baaton se teri
baat na banegi raaja
khaali baaton se teri
baat na banegi raaja
humse na hoga aa aa aa
milan kuchh kar le
kuchh kar le
jatan kuchh kar le

mere ghunghroo salaamat
hazaaron qadardaan hain
mere ghunghroo salaamat
hazaaron qadardaan hain
ek tu hi nahin
dil mein
dil mein laakhon mehmaan hain
laakhon mehmaan hain

lekin kab tak naachegi
kabhi to thhakega aa aa aa
badan kuchh kar le
kuchh kar le
jatan kuchh kar le

ho
kar le humse mohabbat
mohabbat
mohabbat
kar le humse mohabbat
guzar na jaaye ghadiyaan
toot’ti hai paayal to banti hai hathkadiyaan
haaye toot’ti hai paayal to banti hai hathkadiyaan
main hathkadiyaan pehnoongi
main hathkadiyaan pehnoongi
na pehnoongi tere ae ae
kangan kuchh kar le
kuchh kar le
jatan kuchh kar le

athhrah baras ki tu hone ko aayi re
athhrah baras ki tu hone ko aayi re
kaun poochhega aa aa aa
jatan kuchh kar le
humse na hoga aa aa aa
milan kuchh kar le
kuchh kar le
jatan kuchh kar le

Atul ji,

Thank you for writing a note on Santosh Ojha ji.

I know him thru this Blog only. When I started frequenting here and then writting my comments here,I saw some posts and comments by him and I realised that he is one of the older contributors of the Blog.
Then on 6-11-2012, I got an E Mail from Santosh ji. I was actually very much surprised. He had seen some of my comments on a Telugu song elsewhere, and had a query about a song.
He gave me just 2 words from that song (not the Mukhda)” Ghumma
Lakdi ” and requested me to help him find out the full song. It was a great challenge. With only 2 words from within a song,I was supposed to trace a full song. Now, I dont know Telugu (or any language, for that matter) songs by heart.
I first replied him assuring that I would do my best to locate the song.
I did not know that he had a Blog of his own. When I started my chase,I found out about his Blog. I visited his Blog, I scanned almost all his articles in it since 2008 and finally I got an article in which he had mentioned where he had heard that song. It seems he had met the singer of that film song in a train from Hyderabad to Vijaywada.
Anyway, with the help of my sources and a real hard work,I finally got that song and on 6-12-2012,exactly one month after his request,I sent him his song with You tube link etc.
He was extremely happy and thanked me profusely.
After that I visited his Blog as well as Fb page frequently and left some comments and had an exchange of comments also.
He seems a very dashing, adventurous and methodical person. I wish he gets more free time to continue contributing here,in future too.

Atul ji,
Thanks for introducing Santosh Ojha ji. Went through his posts. It was wonderful reading his articles. I think most of us who belong to that period or even an earlier period must have similar experience.
