Today, we are on track to reach the 10K target. And yes, of course, we must also proclaim the 6th anniversary of this blog. Way back in 2008, this day is the day that Atul made a small start with a song from the film ‘Anokhi Raat’. As Sadanand ji has written in his post yesterday,
gair saath aate gaye aur kaarwaan bantaa gaya
Getting to the amazing size of ten thousand songs in this collection – I am sure is a feat that is unparalleled anywhere in the history of online repositories of Hindi film and non film songs. As we are slowly moving towards this eagerly awaited target, I am today posting some songs that have something special about them. In this post, I present an unlisted and presumably an unknown song from the 1961 film ‘Shama’. And what a gem of a ghazal this one is.
It is really a wonder that this ghazal is not listed in the film booklet, it does not appear in the Geet Kosh listing, and no records were made for it. Once you hear this, you will also join me in wonder that this song has gone un-referred anywhere, in any compilation and in any material written about this film and its songs. I would think that only the people who have seen the film and remember about it, would be aware of this song. By that measure, this song is almost as if an unknown song is discovered, and that makes it special to be part of this special set of posts today.
A few days ago, I had posted a rare ghazal from the same film. That ghazal too is a unique and rare one, in that it is sung by actress Nimmi, likely the only film song item that we can find in her voice. In that write up I had put the following closing note
(NOTE: A short note about the songs in this film. The Geek Kosh lists 11 songs for this film. 10 songs are already posted on this blog. With this post, we should be completing the songs of this film. But are we? No, I think not. There is still a surprise from this film awaiting to be revealed. Shortly. 🙂 )
So today I bring on that surprise item from this film. This is a ghazal that is sung in a mushaira by the hero Parvez (role played by Vijay Dutt). The setting is a very traditional one, all the male participants and audience in one part of the hall, and all the lady audience in another part separated by a purdah. The rendition is also very traditional, with frequent applause and emotional participation by the audience, as the ghazal progresses.
The lyrics are by Kaifi Azmi and the tuning and pace is arranged by Ghulam Mohammed. I mention tune and pace only, since there is no musical accompaniment, as the setting is a mushaira and the poets are to present their verses in their own voice. That is what makes this rendition so very interesting. I will not be surprised to find that this most likely is a live recording and not a playback. The singing voice is of Vijay Dutt himself. In the video clip, we can see Roshan Ara (role played by Suraiya) sitting in ladies side of the hall, along with her friend (role played by Indira Bansal). On stage there is one person in white achkan, who is a close friend on Parvez in the film. He is a very familiar character artist of that time, but I am not able to recall his name. Also, sitting on the dias, sporting a goatee beard and a fez cap is actor Lotan. Both of them present their ghazals before Parvez stands up to deliver his rendition.
Does this now close the list of songs for this film? Probably yes. In this same mushaira setting, there are actually two more ghazals, that are somewhat shorter, and somewhat in a lighter note. They too are not listed. I will probably post them together in another post shortly.
And so, listen to this wonderful gem of a ghazal that has thus far escaped being listed anywhere in print or online.
Enjoy.
sach kehte ho tum dil ka bharosa to nahin hai
mehfil mein machal jaaye ab aisa to nahin hai
It is true, what you say
This heart is not worth of trust
(But I say, it has improved)
It no longer is like
It will slip and be wayward in a gathering
kyun hat’ti nahin parde se betaab nigaahen
parde ke udhar meri tamanna to nahin hai
My impatient glances
Just can’t seem to get away
From this screen of drapes
Is it that the one I desire
Is present on the other side
sab husn ke kaayal hain magar meri tareh se
be-dekhe kisi ne tumhen chaaha to nahin hai
Every person reveres beauty
It is such in this world
Ah, but has anyone grew fond of you
Even without seeing you
As I have
kyun jhukne lagi aankhen chhalakne lagey saagar
maikhaane ke baahar koi pyaasa to nahin hai
Why is it that your glance is lowered
And wine cups of your eyes overflow
Is there someone yearning and thirsty
Standing outside the tavern
aa jaao ke hum apna jahaan aap basaa len
duniya ye kisi kaam ki duniya to nahin hai
Come let us build a new world
All our own
This world, this place
Is simply not worth anything
farmaane lagey dekh ke wo dil ka tadapnaa
hai dard magar itna ziyaada to nahin hai
On seeing my heart in agony
This is what she had to say
Yes, there is pain in the heart
But not enough as yet
parwaana ghazal aaj teri kar gayi jaadu
ye faiz usi mast nazar ka to nahin hai
My verses have created a magic
In this gathering today
Ah, so it must be
The graceful favor of her
Exuberant glances
(NOTE: ‘parwaana’ is the ‘takhallus’ (pen name) used by the hero Parvez, in the film).

Sudhir ji,
Thanks for presenting this surprise package and the translation. Enjoyed the lyrics and rendition by Vijay Bhatt.
I think the man in white Achkan is Kumud Tripathi.

Vijaybhai Dutt (Bhatt), who was a famous Gujarati stage artiste had excellent voice & his Gujarati dialogue delivery was the best during his active days on stage(1955-1985).
Here also he excelled in Urdu Ghazal. In this movie too, his Urdu pronounciations were perfect.
