The streets of cities and town all around India looked deserted, when from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988, “Mangal Bhavan Amangalhaarri” was heard on Doordarshan TV, The title of the famous Serial ‘Ramayana’. Initially Jaidev-ji was the MD for the serial, but soon after his death, Ravindra Jain took over the responsibility. Most of us had enjoyed the serial enormously.
Rama and his three siblings, Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughna were trained in various arts, including war crafts and music by Rishies in Gurukul’ style. The presentation starts and end with the famous title song and in-between, is a unique very short Raaga Maala, taught by Guru-Maa, consisting of Lalit, Yaman, Desh, Chhayanat, Sohini and concluding with Lalit again, covering few Raagas which are sung from early morning to late night.
Both the MDs mentioned above being the masters in creating Raaga Maalas, this presentation might have been the creation of the either. Kavita Krishnamurty and Saadhana Sargam are the main voices leading the chorus.
