Chaandni raaten – Song no. 13

So we reach no. 13. This unlucky no. is lucky in this case because I thought of looking for this song which I had forgotten. It was a much liked song in its time. And it fits the theme of ‘chaandni raaten’ like a glove.
Also lucky because I am running out of newer songs which are appealing to me. I have scores of older songs, but few new ones. A few I dont want to discuss ‘kyunki mujhe wo gaane pasand nahin hain’ and a few ‘jo mujhe pasand hain’ are a bit deviating from the theme of ‘chaandni raaten’. For example I have got a ‘chandaa maama ‘ song which has no connection with ‘ raat ‘ or ‘chaandni’. There is one more song which has a longish mukhda with this line ‘chaand huaa awaara subah ka nikla taara’ towards the end of mukhdaa and the line is never repeated in the song. Such a poetic line and this neglect.
This song is from the movie ‘Jhoothi’ (1985), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, whose birth Anniversary fell on 30/09/2014.
It is a duet by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, written by Maaya Govind.
The composer of this S.D.Burmanesque song is Bappi Lahiri. Though the song is sung on screen by Raj Babbar and Rekha, the whole cast of the film is present listening to the song. The audience are Amol Palekar, Supriya Pathak, Dewan Verma and Prema Narayan.
Rekha played the title role of ‘jhoothi’. Rekha, Prema Narayan and Amol Palekar are siblings. Supriya Pathak is married to Amol Palekar. Prema Narayan and Dewan Verma are engaged. Raj Babbar who is Dewan Verma’s brother is a doctor/dentist. This is what I remember but not sure if I have seen the entire movie.
Now I know why this is sounding S.D.Burman’ish. The tunes reminds of ‘megha chhaaye aadhi raat’ from ‘Sharmilee’ as well as “tere mere milan ki ye raina” (Abhiman). May be the songs are based on the same raag.

thanks for this lovely chaand song. actually all the couples in this movie are to-be- married couples. Rekha plays a Jhoothi (as you have mentioned). she uses a lot of cleverly told lies to get her sister Prema Narayan engaged to Deven Verma and also to get Raj Babbar realise that he loves her (Rekha). and towards the end of the movie she again uses “lies” to get Amol Palekar realise that he loves Supriya Pathak. then the closing shot of the movie shows all the 3 marriages at one mandap.
