One more song, the final one of this series – it belongs to the category ‘heard- just-once-o-but-never-forgotten’. And once again, another dramatic reunion, this one just two days ago.
Would you believe that I heard this song just once, traveling in a local bus, on a transistor carried by another passenger, ages ago, while I still was at school. As the habit was, soon as the flow and music caught my ears, and my fancy, my mind started to record this song. The follow up situation was the same as in the case of the song from ‘Badmaashon Ke Badmaash’ – “Arree Na Baandho Gori Baaju Pe Ghadi”. The song is clearly a regional language song. Today I know it is Chhattisgarhi. At that time, I had no clue. For all these years I was under the belief that this will be a non-film song. My mind never went to the side of exploring regional films in Bhojpuri, Maithili, Chhattisgarhi etc. I searched off and on for this song but was never able to trace it.
As this series was coming to a close, I got a message from a dear friend, who has also been following this series. He suggested adding a song from a non-Hindi regional language film. Now when I had thought up this series in my mind, I had limited myself to the decade of 1970s. At first I was considering doing one song from each year. After some browsing I changed my plans to do two songs per year – a solo and a duet. And even with that, I left out all duets with other male singers, and songs with three or more singers. These can be a category and a series by themselves. Then the idea came to add two songs from unreleased films. And now this suggestion from my friend to include a song from a regional film of 1970s.
My mind went back into the Geet Kosh once again, and I recalled that there is a section at the end of volumes 4 (1960s) and volume 5 (1970s) which lists the regional language films of the decade (north Indian regional languages only). I requested my friend to suggest a song, as I was not too familiar with the songs from regional films in 1970s. He sent me a link. And I just could not believe it. Again, a song reunited after what, maybe four decades. It is just amazing. I went back to the Geet Kosh. The film is ‘Ghar Dwaar’ in Chhattisgarhi language, and the listing is sitting very much in volume 5. Maybe, by the time I got to acquire the Geet Kosh, I had stopped looking for this song. It used to play in the mind and I would hum it, but I had lost all hopes of ever tracing it again.
So anyways. The film is produced under the banner of JK Films, Raipur. The details of cast of actors is not available in the Geet Kosh. Music is by Jamaal Sen, and the lyrics are written by Hari Thakur. The listing shows a few more songs, two solos by Suman Kalyanpur and two duets of Rafi Sb and Suman Kalyanpur. As far as translations are concerned, I would defer to Atul ji for that 😉 and request him to add the translation of the lines of this song.
So many things coming together with this song. And also, coming to the end of this series. It has been a wonderful journey of re-acquaintance as I got to seriously listen again so many hits of the radio listening days. It has been a joyful trip down the memory lane.

Journey never ends. You just take a pause to cherish the past and then plan for the next one. And I am sure you are doing the later part.

A lovely free-flowing song with a folk touch.
Though I never had any exposure to Chhattisgarhi boli, there was no problem in following the meaning of the song as most of the words are either the same or almost similar (just slightly different) to the Avadhi or khadi boli.
I associate the name of Jamal sen with the wonderful music composed by him for Kamal Amrohi’s “Daayera”. I had once listened to an interface with the doyen Naushad Saheb, who had heaped a lot of praise and respect for Jamal sen, while introducing his lineage – the third generation of Sen composers, viz., Suhail (?) Sen, et.al.
I know that Subir Sen had no connection with Jamal sen, except having a common surname, but I think (have forgotten now) somehow Shambhu Sen was related to Jamal sen.

Yep Sudhirji I have enjoyed the series and so would others.
I like the khadi bolis of our country(as much as I like the slang of English). They are so colourful and descriptive. If I hear someone talking in Mumbai I just stand by and enjoy the flavour of the language or sometimes gather courage and talk to him/them.I like to hear Brajbhasa, Avadhi, Bhojpuri, Bundlekhandi etc
My wife happens to be from Indore where they speak Malwi bhasa, which is a mixture of Braj, Marwadi, Gujarati. Strangely there is no gender involved. The ladies also would say mai khaunga. Kai gayo thho(where have you been); kai naam hai thharro(what’s your name) etc.Our relatives encourage her to speak to Indore so they can hear here speak in Malwi. Sometimes after finishing she would continue talking in Malwi with me!!!
Many bloggers would not know that Jamal Sen was a disciple of Sajjad Hussein(I read on YouTube). He was a huge personality with Rajasthani mustache. Even Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was impressed by his gayeki and described him as Tansen and Sur Ka Bichhu. He was a classical singer and a Kathak dancer. What a colourful personality!.

Jamaal Sen may be does not have too many films to his credit, but is work is outstanding, with films like ‘Shokhiyaan’ (1951) and ‘Daaera’ (1953) to his credit. Yes, I have seen his picture – the moustache is really prominent.
