SONGS FROM ARTISTE NAME FILMS…..Song No. 9
———————————————-

Today’s selected song is from film KAMLA-1946.

Now, one may start wondering who is Kamla ? This is because the actress KAMLA KOTNIS was not a very prolific or well known actress and her career in Hindi films was also very short. However, she has the unique distinction of being the FIRST ever Heroine of DEV ANAND in his Debut film- Hum Ek Hain-1946. So, as long as Dev Anand will be remembered, Kamala Kotnis’s name will also be remembered.

What is common among these actresses ?…. T R Rajkumari, Pandari Bai, Vyjayantimala,Waheeda Rehman,Padmini,Ragini, Hema Malini etc etc..

The common factor in all these actresses is that they all came to Hindi Films after working in southern films like Tamil and Telugu. T R Rajkumari’s first Hindi film was Chandralekha-1948, Pandari bai and Vyjayanti mala came via film Bahar-1951, and we all know that Waheeda Rehman was introduced in film C.I.D.-1956, by Guru Dutt. Nevertheless how many of us know that even before T R Rajkumari, there was a Hindi film Heroine who came here after doing films in Telugu language ?

The answer is KAMLA KOTNIS. Kamla was born to a fruit vendor of Andhra and a British Tommy-soldier. She was adopted by a rich Zamindar and brought up in luxury. She was named kamlabai in that Telugu household. She was very beautiful and studied Music and dancing from good teachers. No wonder she was picked up by Film producers for acting. her first film was Jeewan Jyoti-1940,when she was just 16 year old.

the Cinematographer for this film was one Dinkar Shantaram Kotnis. His younger brother Pandurang also used to visit the studios to assist his brother and learn Camera work. Kamlabai was doing the role of Heroine’s( C.Krishnaveni) close friend. She was attracted to this young Pandurang. Love bloomed and they both got married in 1941, becoming Kamla Kotnis. Kamla started getting roles in Telugu films and soon she became a leading lady. Her Telugu films were Jeewan jyoti-40, Bal Nagamma-42, Chenchulaxmi-43, Bhagyalaxmi-43, Shri Sita Ram Janamam-43 and Tehsildar-44.

Dinkar kotnis had returned to Bombay to do a film Vasantsena-41. Pandurang kotnis, who was by now a Cameraman with Jaya Studios,Madras, also decided to shift to Bombay. Kamla was soon picked up by Prabhat film company to star in Hindi film Hum Ek Hain-1946,as Dev Anand’s First heroine. This film was a DEBUT film for Dev Anand,Kamla Kotnis,Rehman, Rehana and Lyricist P L Santoshi as a Director.

Kamla Kotnis had unusual Brown eyes. There were only two heroines with Brown Eyes. One was Kamla and the other was Vanmala.

After Hum ek hain-46, Kamla acted in Gokul-46, Mera Suhag-47, Aagey Badho-47, Seedha Raasta-49 and Sati Ahilya-49 which she produced also.

Her husband Pandurang and his brother Dinkar Kotnis were the younger brothers of the famous Dr. Dwarkanath Shantaram Kotnis, who went to China to serve on the war front and died a Hero’s death there. V.Shantaram had made a film on him- ” Dr. Kotnis ki Amar kahaani”-1946. Actor Shashi Kapoor (sr.) had done the role of Pandurang Kotnis in that film. Later Shashi Kapoor( sr.) also acted in film Sati Ahilya-1949,a film produced by kamla Kotnis, in the role of Shri Ram ( ” Kamla ji used to do my make up herself “-Shashi Kapoor(sr.) ).

The younger sister of Kamla Kotnis was Leela, who was married into the Ramnad Zamindar house. Her daughter Latha was very beautiful and at the age of 14 itself she was offered a Heroine’s role in a film opposite M G Ramchandran-MGR-. her mother Leela, ofcourse opposed and rejected the offer. However, Kamla Kotnis convinced Leela and encouraged Latha to join film industry. Finally Latha accepted the offer and in due course became one of the leading actresses of Tamil and Telugu films. She was the Heroine when Jaylalita was competing with her for acting with MGR !

Not much information is available on Kamla Kotnis except what is made available in this article. However, my friend Ms. Priya Laxmi ji of Hyderabad sent me a cutting from a Telugu magazine published in 1947 and my friend shri P.Shreenivasa Moorthy from Hyderabad translated it into English thus…

” Smt Kamala Kotnis

She is now ruling the Hindi and Telugu film industry as a “Dream Girl.”

Charm in the face ,gait in walking and demeanor in her posture have brought her to this stage.

She has no parallels in playing romantic roles in the most natural manner. She is also a good singer.

Her role as heroine of Narayana Rao in “Chenchu Lakshmi” is outstanding. Her first movie was “Jeevana Jyothi””,

She won the laurels and appreciation of Andhra audience for her roles in ” Balanagamma” “,Thasildar”, ” Sitarama Janam” and many other films.

She acted with grace in Hindi films like ” Hum Ek Hai”, “Gokul “,” Mera Suhag”, “Seedha Rasta”

She also acted in the film ” Bhakta Vikramaditya” (Marathi) produced in Poona which was directed by her husband Mr Panduranga Kotnis who earlier worked as a cameraman in Jaya Studio.

She is fond of driving the cars , playing badminton and buying and reading a number of magazines.. “

( My thanks to Priya Laxmi ji, P.Shreenivasa Moorthy ji,The Hindu and my notes).

The film ” Kamla”-1946 was a Laxmi Productions film. It was directed by Chimanlal Trivedi. The MD was Gyan Dutt. There were 8 songs, mainly sung by Gyan Dutt’s favourite singer Amirbai Karnataki. The cast of the film was Leela Desai ( who came up by being main actress of New Theatres,Calcutta and who was the sister of Monica Desai and Ramola devi), B R Nandrekar (one of the most Handsome actors of Hindi films),Agha, ghulab, badriprasad etc etc.

Let us now enjoy a song from the film Kamla-1946…
