Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 17
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1979 – Solo)

This song by Rafi song has been a very dramatic reunion for me, and very that too, very recently. Although 1979, but who would even pay an iota of attention to a film titled ‘Badmaashon Ka Badmaash’. Till just two three weeks ago, I was not even aware that a film by this name exists. However, this song is one of the category which I call ‘heard-just-once-o-but-never-forgotten’. Times were fairly into the second half of seventies. We had moved into our own home by this time. And my family still did not own a TV. My mamma ji (maternal uncle) and his family had moved in with us. And the extended family was sharing their TV.

I believe it must have been some time earlier than 1979, that I heard this song for the first time. And once again, in a live program on Doordarshan. This one by Rafi Sb. I remember the evening pretty well. Rafi Sb being one of the favorites of my mamma ji, we watched this program together. He sang many hits and favorites to start with. During the latter half, he sang some poignant songs and a couple of somber ghazals. And close to the end, he himself said, the mood of the evening has become subdued, and so he is presenting this song. And without any additional information, he broke into this song. And I must say that he changed the somber mood within seconds. I was taken in by the play of words, and the very Punjabi getup of the entire song. My mammaji was thrilled, and was ready with comments like – “waah wah, kya cheez sunaai hai” , and “who says Rafi is done with”.

I had no inkling about the details of this song. I had no idea what category it was. Being a Punjabi sounding song, the first and the firm thought was, this is one of those Punjabi songs, either from a Punjabi film or simply a Punjabi non-film song. It never did occur to me otherwise. Later, when I had tried to sometimes look for this song, I was searching for it in the Punjabi genres, and so never did locate it. But the song stayed with me, committed into memory.

Then, as I started my selection of songs for this series – which is what, more than three decades since I heard this for the first time, I was scanning the Geet Kosh pages for year by year pick of the songs. Alphabetically, this film is close to the beginning of the list as given in Geet Kosh. I read the name of the film, and almost skipped it. My glance caught the word ‘रफी’ and I paused. As I read the title of the song, well I need not describe the thrill and expectation that arose within me. Goodness. . . after sooooo. . . many years. I could not believe that I was reading it right. Now, armed with more information I started searching for the song itself. And as luck would have it, it is available online.

And of course, just for this experience, this song becomes part of this series. But not only for that. It is a wonderful song in its own right. Music is by Hansraj Behl. One of his last films I would presume. He passed away in 1984.

The lyricist name is a new one – Munsif. I am not familiar with this name, and request other friends and readers to add more information about him. The star cast of the film includes Satish Kaul, Bhavna Bhatt, Madan Puri, Raza Murad, Rajendranath, Mehar Mittal, Gopal Sehgal, Ram Mohan, Mumtaz Begum, Tuntun, Bhag Singh, Yash Sharma, Mounto etc. With the presence of names like Mehar Mittal and Gopal Sehgal in the cast, it seems that the team behind this film has its base in Punjab. That is how Hansraj Behl also is associated.

A lively song by Rafi Sb, very much in the Punjabi folk milieu. Especially the pronunciation of ‘time’ as ‘tem’ – a very catchy accent of the language.

Listen and enjoy.

Munsif penned for Khel Muqaddar Ka- 80, Insaaf Ka Khun-91,
Gopichand Jasoos-82 and Badla Aur Balidan-80.
Perhaps it could be Hansraj’s last movie.
