The heydays of New Theatres lasted about one and a half decades, from its foundation in 1931 to around mid 1940s. The war and the famine drastically impacted the film industry in Calcutta. Majority of the artists migrated to Bombay, and the production houses in Calcutta suffered on account of that. Given the circumstances, New Theatres was also impacted. We do not see any significantly notable films come from that banner after the mid 1940s.

The music, however, was another story. The stalwart music directors RC Boral and Pankaj Mullick did not follow the Pied Piper to Bombay, and chose to stay and continue working with New Theatres.

‘Roop Kahaani’ is a film from 1950 that belongs to the post-war era. The films from New Theatres in the post war era did not make much impression and were relegated to obscurity. And so was the music from these films. As far as I could search, I am not able to locate any songs from this film online. So I am uploading from my collection.

The film is directed by Suren Sen. The cast of actors includes Asit Baran, Ashita Bose, Khurshid, Natwar, Vijay Kumar, Rajlaxmi, Tulsi Chakravarty, Jaahar Rai. The seven songs of this film are written by BM Sharma and Prakash. This song is from the pen of Prakash, once again a name that I am not familiar as a lyricist. The music is by Pankaj Babu. The song is sung by Utpala Sen, Asit Baran, and Pankaj Babu himself, rendering just four lines.

The song seems to be a short story being told, in a very poetical manner – about the kingdom of a princess, and a prince who arrives there to win her heart. The entire story is very lovingly rendered by the singers. At the end of the song, the mind remains un-satisfied with the seemingly abrupt ending and wants to listen more of this story.

But what is available, makes for some exquisite and pleasant listening.

Enjoy.

(Note: I have not been able to decipher some words indicated in the lyrics as (?). I request other readers and friends to help with identifying the correct words).

Song-Baadal dal ne raajkumaari ka ek mahal banaaya (Roop Kahaani)(1950) Singers-Utpala Sen, Asit Baran, Pankaj Mullick, Lyrics-Prakash, MD-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

baadal dal ne
raajkumari ka ek mahal banaaya
ho banaaya
nadi kinaare
nadi kinaare dil ka rasta mahal ke neeche aaya
us mahal ke neeche aaya
ho aaya

usi raah se ae ae
usi raah se raajkumar
ghode pe chadh kar aaya

dekh kumar ko
rajkumaari ka dil us par aaya
dil us par aaya
ho aaya

kumar bola
kholo duwaar tum kholo dwaar
kholo dwaar tum kholo dwaar
main maala tumhen pehnaaun
main maala tumhen pehnaaun

o o o o o
kaun bahaane preetam tumko
apne paas bulaavun
oon oon oon
apne paas bulaavun

maaya darpan bola apne
haath ki utri dekhoon (?)
kumar samajh kar mann ki baat
uthha laaye ja ye tu (?)
haan uthha laaye ja ye tu(?)

aavo sajan tum aavo
aavo sajan tum aavo
aavo sajan tum aavo
aavo sajan tum aavo
o morey baalam
o morey saajan
mujh se mil kar baalam mere
prem ki jyot jalaawo o o
aavo sajan tum aavo

darshan tere kar ke pyaari
umang uthhi hai mann mein ae
darshan tere kar ke pyaari
umang uthhi hai mann mein ae
aaj khushi se nas nas meri
thhirak rahi hai tan mein ae
thhirak rahi hai tan mein
