Today (13 october) is the birth anniversary of Ashok Kumar and the death anniversary of two well known artists. Kishore Kumar is one who died this day in 1987 whereas Nirupa Roy left for the heavenly abode this date on 2004.
Most movie goers of my generation and next generations remember Nirupa Roy as a long suffering mother of sons who would typically grow up to become Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. 🙂 But she had played the roles of leading lady for a whole decade before she began to play bhaabhi roles and then mother roles.
The name Nirupa Roy gives an impression that she belonged to Bengal. In reality she was a Gujarati lady whose actual name was Kokila Balsara.
Nirupa Roy had worked opposite Ashok Kumar during the second half of 1950s in several movies (typically playing bhaiyya and bhaabhi of the lead actor) before she began to play the role of mother.
On the occasion of her 10th death anniversary, here is a song from “Razia Sultana” (1961), a movie where she played the title role.
This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Lachchiram Tamar.
The song is picturised on Nirupa Roy who is seen calling the beloved. Her singing bears fruit towards the end of the song when her beloved (Jairaj) turns up at her doorstep.
