The Many Colors of Love #24 – Enticements of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

o dilbar jaaniye
tere hain hum tere
chhupa lenge
in aankhon mein
sanam hum gham tere

When the heart is in love and the mind is star crossed, then the quest for the beloved is a path full of enticing promises that are ready to pledge everything to the object of the affection. Nothing is too much, or too valuable to be deposited as a guarantee, for attaining the aspirations of love.

History, literature and folklore are replete with countless tales that tell of such promises, such enticements that lovers declare to each other in their endeavor to convince the other of their commitment, and their devotion to for the sake of an unending lifelong association. There are tales in which the protagonist undertakes tasks that are arduous and challenging, to impress and to satisfy the wishes of the other. The promises of stars and moon is now a staple part of everyday phraseology – ‘tamanna chaand aur sitaaron ki’.

Love is such a wonderful emotion. In its desire to possess another and to share a life, it is ready to shower anything and everything on to the one who has become the keeper of the heartbeats. And these promises are the enticements to capture the interest and appeal to the person one is in love with. To one who is not entranced by the arrows of Cupid, these promises may sound imprudent and laughable. But for the one whose heart ticks with the beats of love, the giving of such promises and receiving of these promises is a life giving elixir that nourishes the emotions, and keeps the loved ones connected with one other. Such are the enticements of love.

I present a wonderful gem of a song, unheard for a very long time. A song that is one of the many obscure treasures that are alive with the effervescence of Asha ji’s vivacious renditions. The film is ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ from 1961 – one of those films that hold promises of some very rare and wonderful melodies, these from the baton of C Arjun. Two of the six songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. This is the third bubbly offering to find its place here today.

The film is from the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Dharam Kumar. The main cast of actors includes Ameeta, Ajit, Mehmood, Nadira, Lalita Pawar, Mukri, Nazir Hussain, Helen, Leela Misra, Niranjan Sharma, Tuntun, Jagdish Raj, Samson, Maqbool and Raj Dewan etc. The six songs in this film are all from the pen of Jaan Nisar Akhtar, and the music is composed by C Arjun.

A song that will simply carry you away with its pace and flow. And when it ends, it will leave you wondering – at richness of what is termed as the golden era of Hindi film music. Asha ji is simply superb.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega (Main aur Mera Bhai)(1961) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-C Arjun

Lyrics

aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega
aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega

zulfon ke machalte huye ghere na milenge
palkon ke lachakte ye andhere na milenge
zulfon ke machalte huye ghere na milenge
palkon ke lachakte ye andhere na milenge
saanson ka
saanson ka mehakta ye taraana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega
aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega

is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega
aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega

tum jaan bhi maangoge to hum naa na karenge
is dil ke siwaa koi thhikaana na milega
aaye ho to jaane ka bahaana na milega
is dil ke siwaa koi thikaana na milega

Dear Sudhir ji,
I request you to please add my name also to the long list of your fans. Congratulations!
I endorse your observation that this song is “a wonderful gem of a song, unheard for a very long time”. C. Arjun was also one of those talented composers, who, despite consistently giving brilliant melodies, did not get his just desserts.
