VINTAGE NAUSHAD….SONG NO. 3
———————————–
In 1941, Naushad had composed music for three films and Mala was his last film in 1941. By now, Naushad had assessed public’s liking and was trying very hard to compose music which would become popular with the masses. He knew that to achieve this, he will have to be different from other composers and his tunes must be so simple that a common man too could hum them in his bathroom.
Film Mala was produced by Prakash Pictures and was directed by Mahendra Thakur and actor P.Jairaj. He was also the second Hero in the film, the lead pair being Miss Rose and Jayant. The cast also included Nazir, Heera, Lallu Bhai, Daya bai, Munshi Khanzar etc. The lyricists were D N Madhok and Pt. Balam. The film had 10 songs sung by 5 singers.
Jayant was born as Zakaria Khan,on 15-10-1912 at Alwar, Rajasthan. His father Syed Ahmed Khan was originally from Peshawar, but was working as a Sports Coach in the court of the Maharaja of Alwar,Rajasthan. Along with his elder brother Jahangir Khan, Jayant used to sell ‘Makka-Bhutta’ (Maize) on a roadside thela and thus earned his pocket money, with which he used to see films. When he grew up, he was taken by his father to the Maharaja, who recruited him as Second Lieutenant in his Army. Jayant soon got bored with this life, left the job and came to Bombay in search of a job in films. When he met Vijay Bhatt of Prakash pictures, this 6’1″ tall, handsome and young man was liked by him. Jayant also knew Horse riding and swimming. He was named JAYANT by Vijay Bhatt and offered a role in their film Nayi Duniya-1934. Rajkumari Banaraswali also debuted in this film.
Excellent Urdu delivery and handsome personality earned Jayant Hero’s roles in Bambai ki Sethani,Bombay Mail, Lal chithi, Shamsheer-e-Arab, Azadveer, Passing show, Snehlata, Top ka gola, Challenge, His Highness, Khwab ki duniya, Mr.X, State Express, Hero no.1, Sardar and Mala. By now his salary was 3700 per month. He was more at ease in Costume and stunt films than social flicks.
Khwaab ki Duniya-37 was based on the story of Invisible Man and this was the first film as a Director for Vijay Bhatt. Babubhai Mistry from Surat used Trick photography in this film,by using Black Thread on black background.
Jayant was married to 13 year old Kamarbano Sultan. His first son,Imtiaz khan was born on 15-10-42 and second son was born on 21-10-43. He was Amjad Khan (Gabbar singh of Sholey). As a child, Amjad khan was very frail and weak till his second year. Later in his youth, ofcourse he expanded out of proportion. Jayant’s elder brother Jahangir Khan died suddenly in an accident. Jayant was very much attached to him. To forget the sorrow, Jayant started smoking and drinking. After he was out of Prakash Pictures, he was taken by Minerva for Sikander’s role. When Sohrab Mody saw him smoking and drinking on sets, he was summarily thrown out and the role went to Prithwiraj Kapoor, for whom it was a Milestone in his career.
Jayant worked in Alladin, Laila, Bulbul e Baghdad, Mere saajan, Zewar and Dawat. He even went to Lahore to act in “Poonji” and “Shirin Farhad”. When Shirin Farhad became a resounding flop, Jayant stopped getting roles, but he never went to anyone to ask for roles. P N Arora went to Jayant’s house to sign him for Doli. After Partition, his finances became critical and he had sell to even family jewellery for his drinks. He acted in character roles in Amar ,Insaniyat, Madhumati, Maya, Memdidi, Son of India, Kabli Khan, Hakikat, Leader, Himalay ki God mein, Sangharsh, Do Raaste, Heer Ranjha, Mera Gaon Mera Desh etc.
Jayant was a family man. Till the end he had only one wife and he followed the rule to partake the dinner at home with all family members daily. He contracted Cancer, lost his voice in 1970. His last film was ‘Love and God’,which released 11 years after his death.
Jayant died on 2-6-1975. ( Thanks to shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji, for Jayant’s profile in his Gujarati book ,Inhe na Bhulana ).
The Heroine Miss Rose Misbiah was born on 19-6-1911 in Calcutta. Her father was a private secretary to a Bengali king. She passed her Sr. Cambridge and joined a Calcutta firm as a secretary. In one social part, J F Madon, of Madon Theatres saw her and offered her film roles. She joined films, against her family’s wishes. After Madon Theatres, she also worked for Prakash and Sagar films as a Heroine and supporting actress. She did work for National studios after Sagar closed down. Her first film was Turki Sher-1933 and last film was Dassi ya Maa-46. Then she got married and left films. She was a cousin of actress Pramila.
Rose did 2 silent films and 22 Talkie films. She was awarded Gohar medal for acting in 1939. Rose worked with Heroes like Yusuf Effendi, Khalil, Mustafa, Gulam Mohd, Surendra, Prithviraj Kapoor, Motilal, Jairaj, Jagdish Sethi, Kumar, Harish, Kishore Sahu, Shahu Modak, Jayant, Pahadi Sanyal etc.
Her grand daughter Rachel Ruben also worked in films as actress, producer and director.
From 1940 onwards Naushad followed the Ghulam Haider tradition, took to tapping the folk music of North India, in film after film. After the first 5 films, he struck Silver (Sharda-42) and after the 12th film he struck Gold with Rattan-44.
But then this was true in case of every successful composer that initially their music used to be drab, listless and without much melody. In case of Anil Biswas, who started in 1935, his first major success came came in Jahagirdar-37, which was his 13th film. In case of C.Ramchandra, who started from 1942, his first success was Safar-46, his 18th film and he struck Gold with Shehnai-47, his 26th film ! Roshan came into his best after Agra Road-57, his 22nd film. So was the case with S D Burman, Khemchand Prakash and many others.
Comparatively Naushad was better and faster than others in getting success and he showed his talent in his 5th film and after just 12 films he was on the Top of the World. In 1946, Naushad had achieved a Superstar status with Shahjehan and Anmol Ghadi.
Mala-41 was almost his last film with a mediocre music. However Talent is Talent and Naushad’s Talent did show in almost a song or two, even in earlier films. The biggest obstacle was the non-singing singers who messed up his efforts.
Here is a song sung by Miss Rose in film Mala-1941.

Arunji,
How much homework you must be doing to make all of us happy is out of my imagination. I just started reading this series (missed it due to hectic HOUSEWIFE schedule 😦 ). Every post of yours not only has covered info about the journey of Naushad but also the artists of that particular song, this one with Jayant and Miss Rose.
Hats off to you, sir.
Now moving on to the fourth song of this series. 🙂
