Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 13
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The more one searches and sifts through the immense ocean that is the Hindi film song, the more are the gems that come back into memory. And the magic of Chitragupt is seemingly unending. A career spanning a little over four decades, and the number of films he created music for numbering close to two hundred, it is little wonder that hidden gems from this unsung composer will continue to appear and amaze us.
Remembering Chitragupt on the anniversary of his passing away (14th January).
Chitragupt is one music director, who apparently has a very strong grounding in classical music, and for that reason, he was able to create such a treasure of melody that is very attractive and at the same time, simple to hum and very memorable too. Having been confined to the B/C grade cinema most of his career, much of his music has remained obscure and un-venerated. But browsing through his creations and searching for his music, one is bound to be rewarded with gems, at every turn of the pages of his career book.
This song used to be so popular on the radio waves during the 60s and early 70s. The tuning of the melody is such that it will pull your attention, and that is the kind of memory I have of listening to this song on the radio as a child. I also remember having seen this film in re-runs, during the years when Dara Singh was the favorite he-man of my liking.
The film is ‘King Kong’ from 1962. Produced under the banner of Santosh Productions, Bombay, it is directed by Babubhai Mistry. The cast of actors includes Kumkum, Dara Singh, Chandrashekhar, Praveen Chaudhary, Sheela Kashmiri, Leela Mishra, Kamal Mehra, Pal Sharma, Uma Dutt, Parshuram, King Kong amongst others. Lyrics are from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the singing voice is of Lata ji.
On screen the song is performed by Kum Kum as a dance in the royal court. Close to the end of this clip, we can see Uma Dutt sitting in the throne. We also see two other actors disguised with beards, but looking quite familiar. The first one in the dress of a sadhu near the start of the clip, and the second one dressed as the king’s courtier, close to the end of the clip. I request friends and readers to please help identify these actors.
Having seen by now a fair number of dances performed by Kum Kum, I am thinking there should be a category for her dances as well. I suggest to Atul ji, for considering it.
So, reviving the listening memories of this wonderful melody once again. Listen and enjoy.

He is Parhuram the ubiquitous villian in most of the films:
1971 Man Mandir
1970 Safar
1968 Suhaag Raat
1967 Majhli Didi
1967 Ram Aur Shyam
1965 Bharat Milap
1965 Bheegi Raat
1965 Rustom-E-Hind
1964 Aap Ki Parchhaiyan
1964 Geet Gaaya Pattharonne
1962 King Kong
1961 Saranga Senapati
1960 Shriman Satyawadi
1958 Ghar Sansar
1957 Khuda Ka Banda
1956 Basant Bahar
1956 Bhagam Bhag
1956 Jagte Raho
1954 Chor Bazar
1938/II Gopal Krishna as Pendya
1938/I Gopal Krishna as Pandya
1985 Khamosh as light attendant
I can easily recognise a Chitragupt number as he had a typical but unique orchestra. Same as Roshan, SJ, KA, RD, OP…etc
