VINTAGE NAUSHAD……Song No.6
————————————-

Today’s song is a very sweet and melodious Bhajan from the film Namaste-1943. It is sung by Parul Ghosh and G M Durrani with chorus.

1943 was a remarkable year in HFM for two reasons. First is, it really heralded the coming of the Golden Age of Melody in Hindi film music. Actually, the second world war had reached its highest point of tempo and there were severe restrictions and rationing on the supply of Raw film to the industry. The upper limit was only 11000 feet per film. It was made a compulsion to all producers that to become eligible for Govt. quota of raw film, they had to make at least one film in which there was support for Government’s war efforts. The censor rules also became very strict and any depiction of patriotism in any film was prohibited. As a result, the film makers took up light hearted and entertaining themes with lot of music. However, subtle dialogues and double meaning Lyrics ( Like ‘ Door hato aye duniyawalon Hindustan hamara hai’ ) kept slipping through the noses of the censors and helped spread patriotic messages.

Secondly, 1943 also saw the emergence of History making landmark films. The all time blockbuster “Kismet”-43 with its exceptional songs,” Ramrajya”-43, the landmark movie for all classes of society and “Shakuntala”-43, the first film of Shantaram’s own Rajkamal, made on a very grand scale, trumpetting his arrival on the scene-were all feasts for the cine goers. Saigal’s ‘ Bhakta Surdas’ from Ranjit, ‘Prithvi Vallabh” from Sohrab Modi’s Minerva movietone,’ Najma’, the first offering from Mehboob’s own studio, Nargis debut film,’Taqdeer’ and ‘Kashinath’ from New Theatres, Calcutta, made the year 1943 a memorable year indeed. The average audience was drenched in the melody, Glamour,Variety and landmark movies that were availble to him in that year.

As far as Naushad was concerned, it was a real challenge for him to succeed amongst all this and make a mark of his own. He did it so Royally that 1943 became the First 100 % successful year in his career. All three of his films, Namaste, Sanjog and Kanoon celebrated silver jubilee against the backdrop of all the big banner movies that were on offer that year.

NAUSHAD HAD ARRIVED !!!

Although 1952 was the peak year for Naushad-with just 3 films and all of them celebrating Jubilees ( Diwana-Silver jubilee,Aan-Golden Jubilee and Baiju bawra-Diamond Jubilee ), he had recorded 100 % jubilee films in the years 43,45,46,48,50,51,52,60,61 and 63. This type of success will never be repeated by anyone in future !

In the early 40s, composers had a good number of female playback singers to chose from, but there was an acute shortage of male playback PB singers. Most composers used G M Durrani. Naushad also made him his male lead singer. In the course of the next few years he tried other options like Mukesh and Talat, but finally settled for Rafi. He used Surendra as late as 1946. Singers like Prem Adeeb, Karan Dewan etc sang for themselves and not as playback singers. So the choice did not go beyond G M Durrani. Sometimes it was better to use Durrani than to make Non singing actors sing ! But then it was almost like a compulsion, so Naushad went for other singers at the first available opportunity,.

Namaste-43 was a Kardar Production, but it was not directed by him. Instead, he deputed-rather gave chance to Mohd. Sadiq and S.U.Sunny. For both, this was their First movie. Kardar knew Sadiq from 1932. When he first directed the First Talkie from Lahore ” Heer Ranjha”-1932, its story and screenplay was by Sadiq. Mohammed Sadiq (M.Sadiq) was born on 10-3-1910 at Lahore. he started working in films as a story and screenplay writer-and at times as Dialogue writer too- and wrote for films like Thokar, Pooja,Holi etc. He was a very hardworking and intelligent man. Kardar recognised his talent and gave him the chance to direct ‘Namaste-43′. M.Sadiq went on to become a very successful director in India. Some of his famous films were Rattan, Chaudhavin ka chaand, Bahu begum, Tajmahal, Shabab etc. He directed around 28 films like, Balam, Jeevan,Jagbiti, Saathi,Sham savera, Dak Bunglow, Sainya, Anmol Ratan, Noorjehan etc. He was Cinematographer and director for Badnaam-66.

In 1970, Sadiq migrated to Pakistan. There he produced and directed ” Baharon phool barsaao”-71, which was left incomplete due to his sudden death 0n 3-10-1971 at Lahore, where he was born. The film was later completed by Hassan Tariq.

Samiullah Sunny (S.U.Sunny) was born on 9-11-1915 at Allahabad. he was Kardar’s employee for a long time. Finally he got a chance to direct Namaste-43. Later he too directed some famous films like Mela, Natak, Babul, Udan khatola, Kohinoor and Palki. He died in 1966 and Palki was released after his death.

A R Kardar was truly a talent hunter.

Film Namaste-43 had 10 songs, sung by Parul Ghosh, Durrani and Shyam Kumar. However Shyam kumar’s only song from this film was deleted. There is a song,’ dil na lagey’ in this film, sung by Parul Ghosh. The line in the begining of the song..necktie wale Babu… sounds exactly like ‘ jaadu nagari se aaya hai koi Jaadugar, leke Pehla pehla pyar’ from C.I.D.-56. Obviously ,this tune must have been copied by O P Nayyar for that song.

Today’s song, ‘Aan milo shyam saanvwre’ is very melodious and reflects the Naushad style. You may recall another famous Bhajan from Devdas-55,’Aan milo aan milo shyam saanvre’ sung by Geeta and Manna Dey. However that tune is different. S D Burman was not known to copy other’s tunes, he was copying his own Bangla songs enough. The point is both the songs have sweet tunes. So, let us enjoy this Bhajan from Namaste-43…..
