From the very early childhood, probably the deepest interest that I have is gathering and storing away in memory – facts, curious info, peculiar data, and a plethora of such interesting information that I would use (still use 🙂 ) to make interesting conversations and, ahem, impressing others  :).  In short, I have been a General Knowledge (GK) buff since I was toddler.  In my class, I was known as the best and the worst – always scored the highest, mostly perfect scores, in the GK papers, and always, without fail, scored the lowest in art and painting.  (The art teachers were generous; they would give me just enough not to spoil my averages.)

This drive for the GK and accumulating and storing away all kinds of data and information would make me devour books, encyclopedias, reference volumes at a terrific pace, especially in my early school days.  I used to read the atlas, not refer to it, but read it.  :).  As I look back on those years, I very clearly remember one more source of such interesting information and trivia.  Two programs on TV that I used to make religious efforts never to miss.  Given the availability of television in the neighborhood, many a weekday evening were spent hanging on to the windows or crowding the doorways of neighbors who had it, just to make sure to be there when these programs were aired.  These two programs were weekly.  One was a very interesting program on advances in science called The Science Reporter.  And the second one – a program on the curiosities and interesting things from around the world, called The Mirror of the World.  The content of this program never failed to enthrall my tiny mind, looking for more and more GK and curiosities to cram into my memory.

The program used to be presented by a very handsome young man, who looked like a Norse God.  Very athletic build, an energetic presence, and a mannerism that made his presentations worth the time spent.  This program was a weekly event that was not to be missed.  But being aired at 9 pm, it used to be a challenge to convince my mom to be away till that late to see that program elsewhere, especially in the winter evenings.  But nevertheless.

That was my first introduction to Kabir Bedi.  Later I would find out that the years that he presented this program on Doordarshan, he was a student at the St. Stephens College in Delhi.

Greetings to Kabir Bedi on his birthday today (16th January).

Years passed, and Kabir Bedi was no longer presenting this program on TV.  The next thing I knew that he makes a debut on the big screen.  The year was 1971, and the film ‘Hulchul’, a comic mystery story produced and directed by OP Ralhan.  It was one of the films that I got to see on the big screen, while still at school.  That was the start of his film career, that continues to date.  But, his acting career started even earlier, as I was to find out later.  While studying in Delhi, Kabir was very active in stage dramatics scene in the city, and he played some very significant and well advertised roles on the stage including ‘Othello’, and ’Tuglaq’.  From a successful stage career, he moved to the big screen with two films released in 1971.  One is ‘Hulchul’, mentioned above and the second is ‘Seema’, a tragic love story in which he appeared as the lead actor opposite to Simmi Grewal.

The last four decades, and more, since his debut on the big screen have taken him across three continents.  In India, he has appeared in sixty films so far, and continues to be active in the industry.  He is a very familiar figure for the European television viewing public, appearing in many films and serials.  His portrayal the pirate captain during the British colonial times, in the Italian-German-French TV production titled ‘Sandokan’ made him very popular across the continent, and earned him the highest Italian title of ‘Cavalier’ in 2001, which is equivalent of the knighthood in the Great Britain.  He has also appeared in Hollywood films (‘Octupussy’ (1983), ‘The Beast Of War’ (1988)) and many TV serials in the US, the most significant being the serial, ‘The Bold And The Beautiful’.

Back home in India, he continues to be active both on the big and the small screens.  Besides the performances and portrayals, he also writes on social and political issues.  He is the brand ambassador in South Asia, for the Total Literacy Mission of Rotary International.

The song I present today is from the film ‘Seema’.  His other film ‘Hulchul’ in his debut year 1971 had no songs.  That makes this song the first one that has been lip-synced on the screen by him.  The film is produced under the banner of Filmnagar, Bombay and is directed by Surendra Mohan.  The cast of actors includes Simmy Garewal, Kabir Bedi, Bharti, Rakesh Roshan, Chand Usmani, Abhi Bhattacharya, Raj Mehra, Yashodhara Katju, V Gopal, Gopal Sehgal, Bhola, Brahm Bhardwaj, Sulochana, and Padma Khanna amongst others.  The music by the duo Shanker Jaikishan.  The six songs in this film are written by Gulzar, Indeewar and Verma Malik. This song is from the pen of Indeewar.  The singing voices are of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.  As I reviewed the film, this is only song in the film that has been lip-synced by Kabir Bedi.  I was earlier under the impression that may the iconic Rafi song “Jab Bhi Ye Dil Udaas Hota Hai” is performed by him.  But as I checked again, it turns out that the song plays in the background.

Once again, greetings and many happy and healthy returns of this day to Kabir Sb.

Lyrics

waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de
dil mein uth’taa hua
toofaan thehar jaane de
aur thodi der
dekh lene de ye chehra
zindagi bhar ki thakan
dil se utar jaane de
waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de
dil mein uth’taa hua
toofaan thehar jaane de
aur thodi der
dekh lene de ye chehra
zindagi bhar ki thakan
dil se utar jaane de
waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de

teri maasoom jawaani ka hai ehsaas
mujhe phir bhi bethaa le
ghadi bhar ke liye
paas mujhe raani
teri maasoom jawaani ka hai ehsaas
mujhe phir bhi bethaa le
ghadi bhar ke liye
paas mujhe raani
tan ki doori naa rahe
mann ka milan ho sachchaa
pyaar ki is aag mein
tan mann ko nikhar jaane de. . .
waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de
dil mein uth’taa hua
toofaan thehar jaane de
aur thodi der
dekh lene de ye chehra
zindagi bhar ki thakan
dil se utar jaane de

teri aankhon ke kamal
choom loon to chain miley
teri baahon mein zaraa jhoom loon
zaraa jhoom loon to chain miley raja
teri aankhon ke kamal
choom loon to chain miley
teri baahon mein
zaraa jhoom loon to chain miley raja
chand ghadiyaan mil gayin
jo zindagi se humko
apni baahon ki panaahon mein guzar jaane de

waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de
dil mein uth’taa hua
toofaan thehar jaane de
aur thodi der
dekh lene de ye chehra
zindagi bhar ki thakan
dil se utar jaane de
waqt thoda sa
abhi kuchh aur guzar jaane de

Thank you for posting this tribute to Kabir Bedi. He has a very decided fan following among females, moi included.

Nice catchy song. I watched Halchal as a schoolkid, and again some time before. Ok film. Kabir looked gorgeous. Still does.
