Glancing through the comments from the past couple of days, I got a shock to see the RIP comment posted by Avinash ji. Goodness no, but Krishna Kalle is no more. I quickly searched for more news online, but am dismayed to see almost nil coverage of this news. A couple of news sites carried brief items of just a small paragraph or two. She passed away last Sunday, 15th March, after a brief but serious illness. The last rites were performed on Monday. She was 74.
Born in Bombay on 18th December, 1940, she belonged to a family of singers and musicians. Her father was a renowned harmonium player, and both her mother and mother’s sister were singers. Her mausi’s daughter (daughter of her mother’s sister) is Usha Balsavar, a well known singer in her own right. With the family influence as such, it was only natural that the young Krishna was also attracted to music and singing.
Her father had a transferable job, and a major part of her growing years were spent in Kanpur, where she completed her schooling and college education. Being in Kanpur, she imbibed a good influence of Hindi and Urdu languages. She learnt music and singing at the feet of such stalwarts as Ustad Afzal Hussain Khan, Khan Saheb Yunus Malik, Pt. Laxman Prasad and Pt. Ram Prasad Tripathi.
In 1959 she was adjudged as the best signer in a national level music competition organized by All India Radio. She was already attached with the Kanpur station of AIR as a singer. In 1961, she was declared the winner at the Saigal Memorial Music Competition. 1961 was also the year that she got married and moved back to Bombay. Her reputation followed her, and it was not long before she got singing assignments with the Hindi and Marathi cinema. Music director Robin Bannerjee gave her a break in his 1964 film ‘Hukam Ka Ikka’ with the song “Jaane Jigar Zaraa Dekh Idhar”. Over a period of decade and a half, she recorded more than three hundred songs for films, about two thirds of them being for Hindi films. Besides, she also has a fair number of non-film albums, mostly devotional music and some ghazals.
As I reviewed her filmography and list of songs today, I find a pre-dominance of two categories. It is either a religious film, or it is a B/C grade stunt and action film. Browsing through the songs, many of them are cabaret and dance items. A few solo favorites that I can pick out are – “Shamma Jali To Jalaa Parwaana. . . Pyaar Banaa Afsaana” from the unreleased film ‘Pyaar Banaa Afsaana’, under the music direction of Iqbal Qureshi; the famous and popular tune from the film ‘Taxi Driver’ (1973) “Pyaar Karte Ho Yaar, Kar Ke Darte Ho Yaar”; “Pyaar Ne Di Sadaa, Tumko Aana Padaa” from the 1968 film ‘Raaz’. A larger share of her songs are duets or group songs, some of which became really popular.
After the mid 1970s, she took leave of her career with films and led a private family life.
I present today a ghazal sung by her for the 1976 film ‘Zamaane Se Poochho’. The film is produced by Maiqadaa Films and is directed by Abraar Alvi. Seven songs of this film are written by four poets. This ghazal is from the pen of Zafar Gorakhpuri. Music is by Sharda.
RIP Krishna ji. The innings was short, but memorable. I pray that peace follows this passage of life. Good bye.

Song – Hum Bhanwar Mein Kinaare Banaaya Karen (Zamaane Se Poochho) (1976) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Zafar Gorakhpuri, MD – Sharda
Lyrics
hum bhanwar mein kinaare banaaya karen
tum kinaaron se toofaan uthaate raho
hum charaagon ko khoon de ke roshan karen
tum andheron ki himmat badhaate raho
hum bhanwar mein kinaare banaaya karen
di tadpane ki tumne ye kaisi sazaa
kya yahi ishq hai
kya yahi hai wafaa
dl tadpane ki tumne ye kaisi sazaa
kya yahi ishq hai
kya yahi hai wafaa
hum tumhare liye jaan luatate rahen
aur tum hum se daaman bachaate raho
hum bhanwar me kinaare banaaya karen
tumne samjhaa kahaan dard e bezaargi
aashnaa ho ke tum to rahe ajnabi
tumne samjhaa kahaan dard e bezaargi
aashnaa ho ke tum to rahe ajnabi
qehba khaanon mein raadha bikey raat din
tum kanhaiyya ki bansi bajaate raho
hum bhawar me kinare banaya kare

Yes, Composer Sharda & singer Sharda are the same. The photograph presented on the cover of this song, is of same Shardaji! It is not of Krishna Kalle.

Krishna Kalle has been my fav singer all along. Sad to hear about her demise. It was quite annoying and unpardonable of the National dailies who chose to ignore her. The Maharashtra Government had recently honoured her with ‘Lata Mangeshkar Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar-2014’ for her contribution to the field of music. The awards by the state culture department carry a cash reward of Rs.500,000 a citation, a trophy and a shawl. Krishna Kalle started her singing career with All India Radio in 1960 and later sang over 200 Bollywood songs, 100 Marathi movie songs, 100 bhajans, ghazals and devotional songs.
In 1957, she was honoured with national level youth singing awards by India’s first president Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru. The following year, she bagged the All India Sugam Sangeet Award first prize, K.L. Saigal Memorial’s Golden Voice Award and many others.
Expressing grief over her demise, state Cultural Affairs Minister Vinod Tawde said music lovers have lost a versatile singer. She had a great voice. She was more popular with Marathi songs. Thanks Sharda for not singing it herself. She would made a hash of it.

came across this article today and was pleased to find Krishnaji’s fans. I have penned a book on her in marathi 5 years back and tried to bring her in lime lite again. Maharashtra govt took notice of her achievements and though very late awarded her with jeevan gaurav puraskar.
It took me almost a year to actually find her. she was gem of a person by nature and never regrated about the set back she got in the career due to politics of that time.
