Past few days have been very slow on the blog.  Concerns have been expressed in the mails being exchanged not only between the regular team members, but also enquiries are coming from other readers and friends.  Some expressions include statements saying that this blog has become such an integral part of their individual routine of the day.  And on days when we have no posts – dot balls, or even maiden overs, as Atul ji likes to refer to such days, folks have expressed that something seems to be lacking in the day.  And personally, I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.

Somewhat trying and preoccupying circumstances have been keeping Atul ji and myself away from the posts.  I was traveling for the past one and a half week, returned around mid last week.  Atul ji is also on a touring assignment currently.  With me, the additional thing that happened after my return was that my laptop got infected with a virus.  Friday, the 13th March is considered inauspicious in the west, and this date is one of those when some worms and viruses lying dormant in the machines become active and strike.  It happened to my laptop on this last Friday.  The virus became active, and in a matter of few minutes, unknown to me, it created thousands of spurious files on the hard disks, and the external disks connected, making them chock full of data, leaving no room for the operating system to function.  The system stalled.  And it took me almost three days to clean up all the spurious files that were created.  Back in business again, and playing catch up with pending tasks now.

Besides all the communication that happens on this blog related to posts etc., there is other communication also that happens on the side, very regularly.  One of these is the emails that Mahesh ji Mamadapur sends out to Atul ji and me, reminding us of the specific anniversaries of artists, for the day, or for the next day.  It is a great help to keep track of the anniversaries, although I must admit that we do miss some anniversaries, as has been happening in the past couple of weeks or so.  This post is in response to the message received from Mahesh ji yesterday, reminding us of the anniversary of passing away of music director Ghulam Mohammed (17th March).  So this article and song is being posted for that occasion.

As I checked the blog for the songs composed by Ghulam Mohammed Sb, I realized that his debut film as an independent music director is not yet represented here.  That was the first reference point for me to start searching for a song from his earliest films.  I checked the second volume of the Geet Kosh, and tracked down this film ‘Mera Khwab’ from 1943, as his first outing as a music director.  There is a brief remark in the Geet Kosh that acknowledges this fact.  However, as I tried to check on the filmography of Ghulam Mohammed Sb, it led me further back to volume one, and I could locate one more film – this one being ‘Baanke Sipaahi’ from 1937.  The details of this film also identify Ghulam Mohammed Sb as the music director.  I do know for a fact that volume two of the Geet Kosh was published earlier than volume one.  It is very much possible that based on information available till the time of publication of volume two, ‘Mera Khwab’ of 1943 was known to be the debut film for him.  And that by the time the data for volume was being readied for publication, the fact of ‘Baanke Sipaahi’ having credits that include Ghulam Mohammed Sb as the director, would have come to light.  Either that, or it is also a possibility that these are two different artists.  The latter seems a lesser possibility, because it is also a fact that the young Ghulam Mian had come to Bombay in the mid 1920s.  There is also a reference that says that he worked for Saroj Movietone in early 1930s as a percussionist, with a special mention of the 1932 film ‘Bharthari’, and that he assisted music director Anil Biswas as a tabla and a dholak player in his films of 1930s.

I referred to two significant compilations of music director biographies – ‘Those Magnificent Music Makers’ by Trinetra and Anshula Bajpai, and ‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’ by Pankaj Raag.  The former refers to ‘Baanke Sipaahi’ of 1937, whereas the latter does not.  It is very interesting to note that both the books totally leave out the 1943 ‘Mera Khwab’ and directly come to 1946 and the film ‘Mera Geet’.

I will go ahead with the information as per Geet Kosh.  I tried to search, but could not locate any songs of the 1937 film online or elsewhere.  Coming to the 1943 film, I checked but could not locate any songs that have been uploaded online so far from this film, as far as I could make out.  So I am uploading one song today from my collection, and this movie makes a debut on our blog today.  Considering ‘Baanke Sipaahi’ to be the first film and ‘Mera Khwab’ to be the second film of Ghulam Mohammed Sb, this song is arguably one of the earliest songs available, that has been composed by Ghulam Mohammed as an independent music director.

The film is produced under the banner of Paras Pictures, Bombay, and is directed jointly by Hansraj Patel and Nizaam.  The lyrics are written by ME ‘Ashq’, another name that makes a debut on our blog today.  The list of actors in this film includes Prakash, Zebunnisa, Abbaas, Samson, Manchersha, Rafiq, Gulzar, Haseena and Putli amongst others.  The song itself and the info about singer’s name is available courtesy Surjeet Singh ji (of San Diego) and Girdhari Lal ji (of Jodhpur).  The song is in the voice of Hamida Bano.

Listen and enjoy.

Hello Sudhir ji. After reading this post I looked up info about the book mentioned by you: ‘Those Magnificent Music Makers’ by Trinetra and Anshula Bajpai. Though I couldn’t find specific details about the contents, I was surprised by the steep cost of the book – Rs.7000. What is so special about this book? Is it worth the price? Moreover, does it provide more information than ‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’ or is it just like an English version of the book? Please do share your thoughts.
