Today’s song is from the 1957 film ‘Ek Jhalak’.
1957 – what a year it was! The best year in the Golden Era! The best year in the 50s! The best year for melody and music! Such wonderful films came in this year!!! The lineup of 1957 films looks like the selection of the creamy layer in everlasting music – ‘Mother India’, ‘Pyasa’, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Asha’, ‘Miss Mary’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Do Aankhen Baarah Haath’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’. ‘Nausherwaan e Adil, ‘Gateway Of India’, ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, ‘Kathputali’, ‘Sharada’ . . . Films produced in Madras were quite popular. AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, Prasad Production’s first Hindi film ‘Sharda’, and MV Raman’s film ‘Asha’ played havoc with their captive audiences. Films from south somehow have always concocted a success formula, mixing comedy, tragedy, social message, excellent production values and above all superb music, which made their films very popular everywhere.
Satyen Bose’s ‘Bandi’ brought together all the three Ganguly brothers in one film for the first time. Later he would repeat this feat in ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ in 1958. ‘Musaafir’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s first Hindi film as a director, was an experimental film depicting the phases of life – birth, life, death and rejuvenation, symbolically through a succession of tenants in a house on rent. Director Amiya Chakravarty’s competetion with Gyan Mukherjee came to an end with his unexpected demise while the making of ‘Kathputali’ was in progress. The film was completed by Nitin Bose. (Later, Gyan Mukherjee also passed away while making ‘Sitaron Se Aagey’ (1958) which was later completed by Satyen Bose. Both films had same story and same heroine).
With the musical blockbuster ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ from Filmistan, Nasir Hussain introduced his own success formula of entertaining films and minted crores by repeating it several times, in a new garb. This film changed Shammi Kapoor’s luck, and made him an A grade actor. However, it did not much benefit the heroine Ameeta. She remained where she was – a second grade actress. Filmistan also released ‘Paying Guest’, with chocolate hero Dev Anand, with superb music and songs composed by SD Burman. Dev also featured in ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, another musical entertainer from Navketan, his home production company.
A surprise hit that year was the socio-religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song “Zara Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye” became the unexpected top song of the year and an iconic one at that! ‘Apradhi Kaun’ was genuinely an excellent detective story. Amiya Chakravarty’s ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ was a hit due to its superb music, though its cast was quite ordinary. ‘Do Aankhen Baarah Haath’ got the national award. Amiya Chakravarty and Gope passed away in this year. Nimmi got married. Vividh Bharati started its broadcast on 3rd October 1957.
Film ‘Ek Jhalak’ (partly in colour) was produced by Deep and Pradeep Productions and directed by Kalidas, the elder brother of Pradeep Kumar, its hero. In this production company, Pradeep Kumar was a partner, only on paper, with Deep Khosla. Very soon the partnership broke. Deep Khosla went ahead with a modified name for the company – Deep Productions and made ‘Batwaara’ (1961). And Pradeep Kumar set up PK Films and made ‘Mitti Mein Sona’ (1960).
In Hindi films, there have been three actors who were very handsome and very lucky but zero in acting – Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar and Bharat Bhushan. They all appeared in leading roles opposite all leading actresses of their times. They had the best films, best songs and best roles. Karan Dewan had about 25 Silver Jubilees to his credit and was considered a lucky star. Bharat Bhushan had the most musical films to his credit like ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), ‘Shabaab’ (1954) and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) etc. Pradeep Kumar had ‘Anarkali’ (1953) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963).
All three had their brothers producing films for them. Gemini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan, R Chandra made films for Bharat Bhushan and Kalidas for Pradeep Kumar. Unfortunately, in later years, all three lost everything and died in poverty and neglectful anonymity. Karan Dewan was a manager with BR Chopra’s production company. When he died no one came for his funeral except for Chandrashekhar and Manmohan Krishan from the Cine Artist’s Association. Bharat Bhushan worked as a watchman in a film studio, in his last days. Even he died unsung and only the men from the Association were present at the cremation.
Pradeep Kumar’s case is the saddest. He lay seriously ill in the ICU of a Calcutta nursing home, abandoned by his relatives. The hospital was not discharging unless the bills were paid. Luckily one Mr. Pradeep Kondaliya, an estate agent, recognised him, despite his grown beard. He paid the huge outstanding bill of the hospital and took Pradeep Kumar to his home, where he passed away after a few days. He was cremated by his fan. Such is the film industry – cruel and ruthless, where the recognition lasts only till one is successful.
The cast of actors of ‘Ek Jhalak’ includes Pradeep Kumar, Vijayantimala, Pran, Mubarak, Rajendra Kumar, Anita Guha etc. The producer Deep Khosla too did a role in the film. (Note: Deep had also acted in ‘Ek Shola’ (1958), ‘Police’ (1958) etc. He wrote the story and dialogues for ‘Ek Shola’). The music of ‘Ek Jhalak’ was by composed by Hemant Kumar, ably assisted by Ravi. There are nine songs in the film, four of which are already posted here. These are – the two versions of ‘Aa Ja Zaraa‘ (a blatant copy of the famous “Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White”), the fabulous Hemant–Asha duet “Ye Hansta Huaa Karwaan Zindagi Ka Na Poocho Chalaa Hai Kidhar”, and the Hemant Kumar solo, “Gori Chori Chori Jaana Buri Baat Hai‘. I have not seen this film since I never liked Pradeep Kumar. But I know the film revolves around a plot in which a girl Mala, elopes with her music teacher Shekhar whom her family does not like. On her parents’ request, Pradeep sets out to trace the girl. He catches the wrong girl, Shobha. By the time the entire story unfolds, Pradeep and Shobha are in love.
Today we will enjoy another very good song from this film, a duet of Hemant Kumar and Asha. I am sure you too will like it. . .

1957 was quite prolific year of production. In fact I have 213 pages of songs yet to be posted.

It is NOT so. The facts tell a different story. In the period from 1954 to 1960,lowest number of films were made in 1957 ! See this-

It is a different thing that maximum number of films had excellent music,compared to other years in the Golden Era.

If films starring Pradeep Kumar, Bharat Bhushan or Karan Diwan succeeded in the box office, does it mean that it was because of something else?

Seshadri ji,
A film succeeds with the total contribution of all related factors-mostly,the content,music.Hero,heroine’s acting, etc etc. In case of these three Heros,they were lucky to have all other factors strong,except their acting,which did not matter much anyway. They got the best stories,best Heroines,best MDs.Best songs best music,direction,production values and all other things. Again,nothing succeeds like success.
