The versatility of a writer, especially a song writer, is a direct reflection of his well rounded awareness and understanding of the many aspects of this life and the society that we live in.  Getting into the industry, and writing for the regular social and romantic themes is one level of expertise.  The next dimension to that is to move away from the conventional lines and create unusual verses.  Like the path breaking new sounds that RD Burman created in the 1970s.  An example of a neo+ song that comes to mind is the striking “Dam Maaro Dam” from the 1971 film ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’.  The theme and the expressions in this song, well reflect the then ongoing hippie ‘revolution’ that had swept around the globe, starting from west in the second half of 1960s, and making its way east, as an undefined quest.  The song represents the moods of rebel thoughts that drove this movement.  Taking in the changes that were coming along with the newer generations, Anand Bakshi wrote the simple lyrics of this song, that at one time, had become the signature beat for the hippie people.

Remembering Anand Bakshi, on the day of his passing away today (30th March).

The intense desire to be a singer in films, took a fair amount of time to be realized, albeit only marginally.  But it did establish him finally as a songwriter, who remained in great demand, all the way from the mid 1960s when his career took an upward leap, to the time that he passes away in 2002.  And even beyond.  Destiny took a very meandering path, before Anand Bakshi ended up to be where he wanted to be.

He was born in Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan) on July 21, 1930 into a family of police and army officers.  He left his studies after 8th grade to join the Royal Indian Navy as a post boy.  Rather his father got him the posting, as the young boy showed no interest in studies, and was more interested in watching films.  He had thought of reaching Bombay on a naval ship.  But destiny designed it such that his ship reached Bombay in 1946, the mutiny of the Indians in the navy happened, and he was one of those who were sacked for being part of the mutiny.  He returned home, and in a short shrift, the partition happened.  The family moved to Lucknow and then to Delhi.  In 1947-48 he joined the Indian Army.  The poet within him was making its presence felt, and his verses got published in the ‘Sainik Samachar’, the army’s magazine.

In 1956, he gave up the army life and came to Bombay in search of his dreams.  It was a struggle, with having to spend days without a room and without money in pocket, on the railway platforms.  With 1957 and 58 came his first breaks – ‘Silver King’ (1 song), ‘Bhalaa Aadmi’ (5 songs),’Hum Bhi Kuchh Kam Nahin’ (3 songs), ‘Pehla Pehla Pyaar’ (1 song) and ‘Sun To Le Haseena’ (3 songs).  Popular recognition was still a few years in the future.  But sampling of his talent began to appear – “Meri Tasveer Le Ke Kya Karoge, Tum Meri Tasveer Le Kar” in 1962 film ‘Kaala Samundar’, “Gham e Hasti Se Bas Begaana Hota‘ in 1962 film ‘Vallah Kya Baat Hai’, “Tumhen Husn De Ke Khuda Ne Sitamgar Banaaya Banaaya” in the 1963 film ‘Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai”, “Chaand Aahen Bharega Phool Dil Thaam Lenge” from the 1963 film ‘Phool Baney Angaare’ and more.  1964 saw the arrival of ‘Mr X In Bombay’ and the team  up with Laxmi-Pyaare brought a suite of memorable songs including “Mere Mehboob Qayaamat Hogi” and “Khoobsurat Haseena Jaan e Jaan Jaan e Mann“.  In 1965, it was ‘Himalay Ki God Mein’ and ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’.  Anand Bakshi had arrived on the film scene in Bombay.

But his desire to sing still had to wait till 1972, when he sang his own verses for two songs in the film ‘Mome Ki Gudiya’ – “Baaghon Mein Bahaar Aayi” and “Main Dhoondh Raha Tha Sapnon Mein”.  And then the starting verses – “Dil Insaan Ka Ek Taraazu. . .” in the song “Ke Aa Ja Teri Yaad Aayi” in the film ‘Charas’ (1976).

Anand Bakshi went on to be nominated a record 40 times for his songs at the annual Filmfare awards, which he won four times.  He passed away in Bombay in 2002, suffering from heart and breathing problems brought on by the lifelong habit of smoking.

I present this song from the film ‘Baanke Saanwariya’ from 1962.  A very lovely composition by music director S Mohinder, of a wonderful song describing the past times of Krishna, as he pursues Radha going to Jamuna to fetch water.  The happenings of this episode are described simply and Suman Kalyanpur has rendered this so lovingly.  Another one of the beautiful memories of the radio listening days.
Listen and enjoy.
