Amitabh – The Later Decades – 2
—————————————————–

I am sure everyone remembers Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji.  A very young rookie doctor, who is very troubled with the state of health affairs in general.  An introvert and reserved person, living a very sedate life.  The story is ‘Anand’ and the actor behind the Babu Moshai character captured the attention and the imagination of the audiences and critics alike.  He was new, and struggling and still to land a lead role for himself.  That was 1970.

Fast forward to 35 years later.  The rookie doctor is now a phenomena in the industry.  All the way up and up from 1970 onwards, with one dip in late 1990s / early 2000s.  The year now is 2005, and once again the phenomena is on the up and up.  Amitabh – the artist who is and continues to be the center of attention, no matter what scene and situation you put him in.  Yes, he has moved up in years.  Yes, he does not look wet behind the ears as he did in ‘Anand’.  Ah but the transformation has been so graceful, and he is the idolized ‘hero’ in the mind of millions around the world.  This is an unparalleled phenomena in the Hindi film industry.

The film is ‘Bunty and Babli’.  Notwithstanding the ending, the film advertently or inadvertently succeeded in glamorizing the small time criminal.  The social impact of this was tremendous.  Over the subsequent few years, many such cases were highlighted in the media, of young people working in pairs as confidence tricksters and con-persons, and making away successfully with a lot of loot.  Eventually as the law caught up with them, the one thing that got the attention was their statements.  This film was the inspiration behind their detours into crime.

Amitabh plays a semi-crooked police officer in this film – DCP Dashrath Singh.  He is on the trail of Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan) and Babli (Rani Mukherjee) who are traveling around the country, playing the con, one trick at a time.  By the time this song comes on, the DCP has caught up with the nifty pair, but he is not making any moves since he has no conclusive evidence yet.  Plus he is waiting to see if the pair is going to pull off a major heist, as is being rumored.

The song is the typical item number, that gets its place in films, without any link to the script.  It is just there – we are told that is what entertainment is all about.  But that discussion another day. :).

The setting is the bar of a hotel.  The con-pair is staying in this hotel.  The female partner is upstairs in one of the rooms, and as per the sequence of the script, she is an expecting mother at the time this song and dance is happening in the bar of the same hotel.  I am sure all blame is at the doorstep of the drink the men are having.

The song starts off as a mujra – what with the traditional ‘salaam’ gestures, and the dress up and the candles in the traditional candle stands.  So this is the first time for me, that a mujra is being performed in a bar.  Or maybe that I have seen too few movies of the recent years.

The primary performer is the unnamed dancer (Aishwarya Rai) who makes a special appearance only for this song.  So quite a complete family affair with the father , son and daughter-in-law in the same frame.  The last time I recall that a lead actor played a romantic interest opposite to a daughter in law is back in the 70s, when Babita was to wed Randhir Kapoor.  The wedding had not yet taken place, and she was appearing as the leading lady in films opposite to Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor.  At that time, the press had made some comments about that.  In this song, we have a similar situation, with the primary dancer clearly ignoring the advances of the younger protagonist, in favor of the elder and more mature.  Well, it is just a film.

The music is by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.  The singing voices are those of Alisha Chinoy, Shankar Mahadevan and Javed Ali.  Amitabh himself is not credited in the list of singers, but very clearly, the ending couple of sentences – “Aaye Haaye. . .” are in his voice.  Alisha Chinoy has rendered a wonderfully sensuous performance in playback for Aishwarya.

The most interesting part of this song is the verses.  Coming from the pen of Gulzar, one can expect no different.  The play of words is so endearing.

surme se likhe tere waade
aankhon ki zubaani aate hain

Wow, what an expression – the unkept and broken promises you made to me flow from the eyes with the kohl (surma).

teri baaton mein kimaam ki khsubhoo hai
tera anaa bhi garmiyon ki loo hai

Saying that the presence of lady brings up fragrance and heat.  ‘Kimaam’ is an ingredient that is used in ‘paan’ for taste and fragrance.  And the ‘loo’ is the hot winds of June afternoons in north India.

dard hota hai dard jab chubhtaa nahin

It pains me, when the pain is not severe enough to hurt me.  Wow and wow.

And then the lines that refer to some past interlude in Delhi.

tujhse milna puraani dilli mein
chhod aaye nishaani dilli mein
balli maaraan se daribe talak
teri meri kahaani dilli mein

‘Ballimaaran’ and ‘Dariba’ are two of the more significant streets in Chandni Chowk, the most important marketplace of the traditional Old Delhi (the walled city).  Chandni Chowk is a mesh of tiny streets and lanes that originate from the main thoroughfare.  The whole layout is so tightly knit and complex, it is a whole universe all by itself.  Amazing is the number of streets and the businesses that line up these streets, and amazing is the magnitude of the amount of business that happens everyday in this heavily congested area.

‘Dariba’ is one of the main streets that is close the Red Fort end of Chandni Chowk.  It is an all and all jewelers market.  ‘Ballimaaran’ is another main street, which is close to the other end of Chandni Chowk (the Fatehpuri end).  Originally this was the wholesale market providing ‘balli’ – the wooden poles, sticks, rods of all shapes and sizes.  These days, the ‘balli’ business is almost gone, and the street is now the business home for shoes and other leather products.

The walk from ‘Ballimaaran’ to ‘Dariba’ is less than ten minutes at a brisk pace.  But during business hours, the entire thoroughfare is so crowded and tightly packed that even walking on the pavement is an arduous task.  Over the years that I have been visiting this area, I have realized that walking briskly in this area is an art form all by itself as you continuously bend, dodge and move around other people, vehicles and things.

And wait, now that I am discussing Chandni Chowk, I realize that is what the lady is referring to in the opening lines itself of the song.

aisi nazar se dekha
us zaalim ne
chowk par

‘chowk’ here is Chandni Chowk.  It connects so well.

So getting back to Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji.  He is seen in this clip, smoking a ‘beedi’ (traditional mini cigar of India) in the bar of a five star hotel, a senior police officer who looks like and dresses like a hoodlum himself.  But of course, he is center of attention, even for the lady dancer, who is trying to invite him with a candle in her hand.  And he promptly bends over an blows out the candle.  The sequence is full of such tiny comedic pieces.  The senior Bachchan is clearly the better performer.

Maybe it is my bias, but that is how I feel.  Certainly takes the prize.  Especially the ending of the song.  The younger Bachchan passes out – too much alcohol.  And the dancer places a very inviting glance towards the senior Bachchan. With a small modification, Gulzar Sb has inserted the shortest of the poems from English language, the lines that Amitabh sings in his own voice.

i am your only adam

Wah! Wah! Wat a post! 😀
Like a said in my write up in the song from Dilli-6 last year same tym. Only a Dilliwaala can and shd write on Dilli. Otherwise who will explain wat is ballimaaran or daribe. In fact this song was meant to ve a write up by the sudhirji only. I ve been enjoying this song for ten yrs now without actually knowing wat some parts meant. Thank u so much sudhirji
A small trivia at that point I had read somewhere that ab had said that he had one khwaish …to get romantic with Aish. This was the closest. And she was not yet slated to b Mrs junior bachchan then. At that tym junior was interested elsewhere😉

Re: “bhai saab phail gaya”

It’s ” raita phail gaya”, not “bhai saab”. raita phail jaana is a slang muhaavra (metaphor) for something unexpected happening which is devastating for the person or thing experiencing it. “chaar chaar billiyoN ko apni taraf ate dekh choohe kaa to raita hi phail gaya”, “kal raat Anarkali kaa raqs dekhaa thaa? baRii Ghazab ki adaayeN theeN zaalim ki. Shehzaade Saleem ka to raita hi phaila diya usne”.

Also, a minor correction. The order of words is slightly wrong here:
dard hota hai jab dard chubhta nahin
It should be:
dard hota hai *dard jab* chubhta nahin

Dear UVR ji,

Thanks so much for the corrections. Given that this is a Gulzar song, one can expect to see the use of curious phraseology. Even I myself was not satisfied with the phrase “bhai sahib phail gaya”, but I could not decipher the correct words by listening.

I have made both the corrections that you have indicated.

Thanks again
