Readers of this blog can rarely guess my whereabouts from the posts that appear in the blog, unless I share such information. Otherwise posts appear on the blog daily irrespective of my whereabouts or my preoccupation with other activities.

I make use of technology to ensure that posts appear on the blog like clockwork. The technology involved is commonplace today but it was not available just a few years ago. I take it for granted but one still must have the right equipments to use them. If I forget to take even one of the tools of the trade with me then that will set me back by several years to the era where it will no longer be possible for me to blog the way I have been blogging for the last seven years and more.

When I am based at my usual place, I use my regular laptop that is well stocked with all the necessary softwares and hardwares for the purpose. Then I have access to various supporting documents, viz various volumes of HFGK etc lying around within reach. Then there are Bhhole and Chhote nearby to lend me necessary support, either by keeping an eagle eye for mice and wall lizards (and also snakes) or else sleeping nearby (Bhhole near my computer chair and Chhote under the bed). 🙂

When I am journeying, I use a smaller computer (a netbook) that is too tiny to have softwares like say video editing softwares etc, but it comes quite handy during my journeys as I can put it even inside a small handbag. I cannot have access to the usual internet connection during journeys. There I have to rely on dongles. I keep at least two dongles (from two different service providers) so that I always have at least one working internet connection no matter where I find myself.

In addition to internet connection through dongle, I also need access to electricity supply. As it is, my netbook has quite a low battery life (that could be because of my nature of work where several applications must remain open at any time), so I need to have access to power supply, whether I am travelling in a train or I have reached my destination at the end of my journey.

So I was on a train journey yet again. I had taken my netbook and I have taken two dongles with me. Pendrive with updated data on them was also available with me.

I did not use the netbook during my journey, which lasted over 24 hours. When I arrived at my destination and decided to finally use my netbook, I found something amiss. I found that I had forgotten to pack the power adopter with me !

I tried to switch on the netbook nevertheless, but it would not open as it had got fully discharged. I wondered if I would be able to charge it through power banks ( I had two of them with me) that come so handy in charging mobile phones, but I found that it was not possible to charge the netbook with it.

I had my wife with me on this journey and she quickly dissociated herself from any responsibility. “It was your responsibility to make sure that you packed your items yourselves”-she declared.

There were no posts on the blog for two days despite there being time at my disposal. What to do. My wife went to the market to her shopping on being told that the city mall was only one kilometer away from where we were staying. She took the netbook with her, hoping to find its power adopter there. She was unable to find it. I found out about the likely places where I would get power adopter. Go further ahead of City Mall. There is a shopping complex called Baldev Plaza and there you should be able to find it, I was told.

It was late evening when I went to this place called Baldev Plaza. There I found that the place mainly dealt with mobiles. I was told that the place for my requirement was Sai Market, that was close by. I went to Sai Market, and enquired about power adopter for my netbook. “Have you brought the netbook?”- I was asked. No, I had not. I was told that it was not possible to offer the right adopter without having a look at the computer. It was news for me that different laptops/ netbooks needed different adopters. I was under the impression that all power adopters worked with all laptops/ netbooks. I never knew that such imcompatibilities existed when it came to power adopters. I went to another shop and there too I got the same response.

I returned back empty handed. Next day (saturday), I went back to the same shop, this time armed with the netbook. After taking a look at the netbook, the shopkeeper phoned at a few places enquiring about the availability of the power adopter. He received negative replies from all of them. He finally received the information from one source that the required power adopter was available. So he ordered one power adopter to be delivered to the shop.

I patiently waited at the shop. It was after the passage of what seemed like ages before the power adopter was delivered. It was plugged in the netbook and the shopkeeper declared that it was working. I could not see anything for some time before I found the netbook finally waking up, showing a charge of 7 %. So the netbook was finally getting charged ! I paid for the power adopter and came back relieved. It was then that the netbook finally got working again and I posted two writeups for the day.

In this blog, I have discussed lots of songs on the theme of “missing the beloved”. I was feeling like posting a song on the theme of “missing the power adopter”. 🙂 There is no such song, of course. The closest to it is a song where a lady is missing her “necktie waale baabu”. A bhajan singer (Parul Ghosh) singing “necktie waale baabu ko bula de koi re” is just as far fetched as I singing “netbook ke power adopter ko mangaa de koi re””. 🙂

Here is this song from “Namaste”(1943). This song, sung by Parul Ghosh is penned by D N Madhok. Naushad is the music director.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Dil na lage haan haan jiya na lage (Namaste)(1943) Singer-Parul Ghosh, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

dil na lage
haan haan jiya na lage
mora mann na lage
necktie waale baabu ko
bula de koi re
necktie waale baabu ko
bhula de koi re
haay dil na lage
haan haan jiya na lage
mora mann na laga
neck tie wale baabu ko
bula de koi re
neck tie waale baabu ko
bula de koi re

wo jo mera mast nazar hai
wo jo mera mast nazar hai
wo jiska aankhon mein ghar hai
wo jiska aankhon mein ghar hai
wo jiske bina
wo jiske bina
dil na lage
haan haan jiyaa na lage
mora man na lage
more bichhde sajanva
mila de koi re
more bichhde sajanva
mila de koi re

wo jisko ham yaad kare hain
wo jisko ham yaad kare hain
wo jiski fariyaad kare hain
wo jiski fariyaad kare hain
wo jiske bina
wo jiske bina
dil na lage
haan haan jiya na lage
mora man na lage
baanke saanwri sooratiya dikha de koi re
baanke saanwri sooratiya dikha de koi re
neck tie waale baabu ko
bula de koi re

Atul ji,
Excellent write-up with a well-thought and apt song.
While reading the post I could fully validate the story in the back of my mind, since a minor correction I had suggested in my post was duly corrected after 2-3 days.

Many Thanks.

Atul ji,

Your posts describing your experiences always make interesting readings and the readers start empathising with your situations.
The modern technology is no doubt very handy and useful, but it also makes you its slave. Further it does not have ‘pardoning attitude’ for any mistakes.
The above song is not playing even on UT.

Another interesting point. Since I have heard this song many times earlier, you will notice that the line ‘Necktiewale babu ko bula de koi re ‘reminds you the C.I.D. 1956 song ‘leke pehla pehla pyar…..Jadunagari se aaya hai koi jadugar ‘.

This is because,as per O P Nayyar’s own admission, he used this tune in this song.

Haha. These days you can forget to pack your towel, but not the various chargers and devices.

I was out visiting a friend on Saturday and forget my sunglasses at her place. I can live without it for a few days till I can go again. But if I had forgotten my cell phone, I am sure I would have gone immediately again to fetch it. 🙂

Chuckling along. Hilarious and excellent. 🙂
But at that time, you must have been feeling helpless and sad.
I have also wondered about this.
Why can’t they agree on standardised chargers and adapters, preferably using USB types.
