Missing Films of 1960s – 13
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As it is, I am able to maintain little regularity and consistency in posting the songs that I so dearly want to. And then there are other factors that keep distracting me and taking me away from my own planned tracks (pun intended 🙂 ). So I get to start preparing a particular song for posting. And then a message will intervene – “do you have such and such song? Goodness, I just need to listen to it now” or a variation is that someone else, very dear to the requestor wants to listen to it. And so, one more draft continues to sit in the wordpress and my hard disk, and completely different song starts getting prepared.

Not that I am complaining. It is times like this when someone inadvertently introduces or re-introduces me to such a lovely song that I simply cannot stop listening to it myself, and the urge is to get this posted on the blog as fast as I can. And that is how this gem of a melody from an unheard and un-researched film from 1966, got on to the top of my list of drafts. And quite an interesting exchange sits behind this post.

Yesterday evening, this email lands into my mailbox. It is coming all the way from Bangalore, sent in by Gajendra ji. He is enquiring whether I have songs of the film ‘Veer Bajrang’ from 1966, specifically, this song by Asha Bhosle. My mind recollects that I do have some songs of this film, that have been gathered as an exercise to get as much of the 1960s into my collection, as possible. But I haven’t heard them after the first listen in checking for the listing and artists etc. That listen is cursory, as I am very quickly going through the songs, ticking them off the list. When Gajendra ji’s email arrived, it was a more relaxed listen that got applied to this track. And gosh, I was taken by surprise, yet once again. Wow, this lovely number, and has been in the hiding, goodness, for decades. So an interesting exchange follows.

I immediately write back to Gajendra ji, telling him that this song from ‘Veer Bajrang’ will get posted, but he will have to recite the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ (a prayer in the honor of Hanuman ji, who is also known as Veer Bajrangi) for me. His response was very quick. Within matter of minutes, he sent me a YouTube link to such a recital. Now the winds were out of my sails. I ruefully wrote back to him that YouTube has actually taken out all the fun. One does not get to listen what one wants to listen. On the one hand, there is this friend of his who wants to listen to Asha ji singing this song, but he is not able to. And on the other hand, I am wanting to listen to ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ sung by ‘Gajinder Bai Banglauri’, and I am sent a link for another voice. What has the world come to!

Then Gajendra ji writes back that this friend has a radio-rip recording of this song, but that is ‘pathetic’. So could I be a sport, and post it. It became clear that he was not going to oblige my request. And that is how the order of priority drafts got changed overnight. I thought I might just wait it out a day, but seeing no more response come from him. . . Oh well, let us get to this beautiful lilting number.

Music is composed by Pt Shivram. Words are from the pen of Kavi Pradeep. The song has been re-playing in the back of my mind all day today. It is the very first line that just steals the heart away. And Asha ji has rendered it with such pluck and lilt, that the mind wants to continue listening to it.

With this song, we get yet one more ‘lost’ film from the 1960s, on board our musical bandwagon. Listen to it and savor. I am sure you will like it no end.

[PS: Note for Arvinder ji; please don’t mind, one of your requests is actually next on the list, already drafted.]

Song – Meri Aankhadiyon Mein Hai Jo (Veer Bajrang) (1966) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Kavi Pradeep, MD – Pt Shivram

Lyrics

meri aankhadiyon mein hai jo
palak paakhadiyon mein hai jo
sun re sun mere mann
aane waale hain wo
aane waale hain wo

apne chaand se aaj milegi
pehli baar chakori
apne chaand se aaj milegi
pehli baar chakori
nirkhegi chit chor ko chupke
chupke chori chori
ghoonghat mein machlenge mere. . .
ghoonghat mein machlenge mere
aaj ye naina do. .oo. .oo
meri aankhadiyon mein hai jo
palak paakhadiyon mein hai jo
sun re sun mere mann
aane waale hain wo
aane waale hain wo

jee karta hai
jee karta hai e charnon par
phool prem ke daalun
ho oo phool prem ke daalun
ek janam mein sau janmon kaa. . .
pyaar piya ka paa loon
pyaar piya ka paa loon
aaj naa jaane doongi unko
aaj naa jaane doongi unko
chaahe kuchh bhi ho. .oo. .oo
meri aankhadiyon mein hai jo
palak paakhadiyon mein hai jo
sun re sun mere mann
aane waale hain wo
aane waale hain wo

poora hoga aaj puraana
sapna mera salona
jo hai dharaa ki dhool arey wo
aaj banegi sona
jhanko mere paaon ki paa. .aayal. . .
jhanko mere paaon ki paayal
jhanak jhanak jhanko. .oo. .oo
meri aankhadiyon mein hai jo
palak paakhadiyon mein hai jo
sun re sun mere mann
aane waale hain wo
aane waale hain wo

Thanks a lot Sudhir ji for sharing this lovely song. My friend Narahari ji of Mysore is absolutely delighted on getting to hear this song in good quality. He says he has been searching it for more than 25 years!
The song is really nice. Hats off to Pandit Shivram, Kavi Pradeep, Asha Bhosle and to you too for making it available in like you said “peerless quality”!
Its really sad that Pandit Shivram had such a low output and that he got typecast as a composer for mythological films.
As for my not singing, its only to protect listeners’ ears 🙂
