“Poonji” (1943) was directed by Vishnu R Pancholi and Ravindranath Dave for Pancholi Art Pictures, Lahore. This movie had M Ismail, Raagini, Jayant, Manorama, Ajmal, Baby akhtar, Durga Mota, Miss Pandey, Anwari, G N Butt etc in it.
HFGK mentions that this movie had ten songs in it which were penned by three lyricists, viz. Behzad Lakhnavi, Shaukat Thanvi and Deena Nath Madhok, but who wrote which song is not known.
Here is a rare song from this movie. Only the audio is available. The uploader of this mentions Shamshad Begam as the singer and Sagar Nizami as the lyricist. HFGK is silent about the details of this song. The voice sounds vaguely like Shamshad Begam to me. May be it is because of the wear and tear in the record. Singers were not credited in HFM records those days. Lyricists were Perhaps credited and that is how the uploader may have found out about the lyricist of the song.
I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of the singer and lyricist of this song. In case their identities can be established then that will help fill in the gaps in the information about this song. For the time being I have decided to go with the names of artists provided by the uploader
Ghulam Haider is the music director.
With this song, “Poonji”(1943) makes its debut in the blog.
Song- Ab koi toote huye dil ka sahaara na raha(Poonji)(1943) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Sagar Nizami, MD-Ghulam Haider
ab koi toote huye
ab koi toote huye
dil ka sahaara na raha
naaz thha jispe hamen
ab wo hamaara na raha
ab koi toote huye
dil ka sahaara na raha
aankh mein aayi thhi
ik yaad tamanna ban kar
aankh mein aayi thhi
ik yaad tamanna ban kar
ashq ban ban ke giri ee
ashq ban ban ke giri
jab koi chaara na raha
ab koi toote huye
dil ka sahaara na raha
doob jaaye jo ye
kashti to thhikaane se lage ae
doob jaaye jo ye
kashti to thhikaane se lage ae
ab kidhar
ab kidhar jaaye koi
jiska kinaara na raha
ab koi toote huye
dil ka sahaara na raha
haaye bechaargi
ab tere siwa koi nahin
haaye bechaargi
ab tere siwa koi nahin
bekasi
bekasi kehti hai
ab koi tumhaara na raha
ab koi toote huye
dil ka sahaara na raha

Very popular song of our time. Thanks for posting.
By the way, Ravindra Dave was never known as Ravindranath. He, a distant relative of mine and was a Brahmin from Saurastra, Gujarat.
