Today (18 march 1938) is the 79th birth anniversary of Shashi Kapoor. It seems like yesterday when Shashi Kapoor was a leading star of the Hindi movies when I was a school boy in 1970s. when I checked up, I found that four decades have passed since. 🙂
During 1970s, when I was growing up, Rajesh Khanna was the superstar of the day. Shashi Kapoor was played the lead role in “lesser” movies of the day and his movies did just about alright unlike the movie of the superstar did roaring business. Shashi Kapoor’s “Chor Machaaye Shor”(1974) turned out to be a big hit. The movie owed its succeess to its music by Ravindra Jain. The song “le jaayege le jaayenge dil waale dulhaniya le jaayenge” was the most instrumental in bringing movie goers to the movie hall. Shashi Kapoor was the biggest beneficiary of the success of this movie and producers made a beeline to sign him up. Shashi Kapoor decides to may hay while the Sun shone and he signed up all the movies that came his way.
One estimate put the number of movies signed up by him to 70 or so. He became so busy that he did not have “dates” to give to his producers for shooting their movies. While other actors gave “dates” by shifts for shooting, Shashi Kapoor began to give “dates” to his producers by hours, much to their chagrin.
Amitabh Bachchan’s rise to the top benefitted Shashi Kapoor. While many people maintain that Dharmendra- Hema Malini were the biggest hit pair of 1970s, some uncharitable people describe Amitabh Bachchan-Shashi Kapoor as the biggest pair of 1970s. 🙂
The duo would play siblings in many movies, starting from “Deewaar”(!975). Though Shashi Kapoor was senior to Amitabh Bachchan by four years, he played Amitabh Bachchan’s younger brother in these movies. 🙂
Most solo movies of Shashi Kapoor of 1970s were forgettable, and that was to be expected seeing that Shashi Kapoor had signed them up indiscriminately. “Heeralal Pannalal” (1978) was a movie which its makers themselves intended to be a silly movie. This light hearted movie had funny moments that were intended while some portions of it were inadvertently funny. For instance, this movie made so much fun of Police that Censors were not amused. The makers were ordered to put a disclaimer in the movie towards the beginning. This tongue and cheek disclaimer had to be one of the funniest disclaimer in Hindi movies which in fact made even more fun of the subject matter but apparently the censors were satisfied with it.
Here is what the disclaimer said:
We have been informed that the portrayal of the police in the film is completely unrealistic and does not properly emphasise the important role that they play in ensuring peaceful conditions and security for the community. We deeply regret the wrong portrayal which is due to over-enthusiasm and we offer our profound apologies to the police forces of the country for the misrepresentation of their role. we also take this opportunity of reiterating the respect that not only we but every member of the society has for our police forces for the noble cause they serve in protecting life and property.
A funny review of this movie is posted by memsaab in her blog.
On the occasion of Shashi Kapoor’s birth anniversary, here is a song from “Heeralal Pannalal” (1978). This light hearted romantic song is sung by Kishore Kumar. It is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman. Enjoy this song, which was quite popular during its time.

o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
arree o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
naa band kar khidki
nazaaraa lene de
ek baar to jalwon kaa sahaaraa lene de
o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
arree o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
naa band kar khidki
nazaaraa lene de
ek baar to jalwon kaa sahaaraa lene de
maan le meri baat haseena
na kar tu manmaani
teenon kismat se milte hain
dilbar husn jawaani
sun baat apne ae ae
hey hey hey hey hey
sun baat apne dilbar ki
kya aatdat hai dil tadpaane ki
o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
naa band kar khidki
nazaaraa lene de
ek baar to jalwon kaa sahaaraa lene de
wa wa wa wa wa
wa wa
wa wa wa wa wa
ru ru ru ru
ru ru ru ru
ru ru ru ru
banke pawan kaa jhonkaa
main zulfen teri bikhraa doon
gore rang pe in ho.nTho.n se
pyaar ki muhar lagaa duu.N
deedaar tera ae
hoy hoy hoy hoy
deedaar tera mil jaaye
ye chaahat tere deewaane ki
o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
naa band kar khidki
nazaaraa lene de
ek baar to jalwon kaa sahaaraa lene de
kitni door se aaya hoon main
kisi bahaane aaja
tod ke aa jaaunga main to
khidki aur darwaazaa
dildaar tera oy
oy oy oy oy oy
dildaar tera aaya hai
marzi hai tujhko le jaane ki
o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
arree o padosan ki ladki
tujhe dekh tabeeyat phadki
naa band kar khidki
nazaaraa lene de
ek baar to jalwon kaa sahaaraa lene de

After a long time aisa hua hain. You ve posted the exact song that was playing in my head over the last so many days. I was slightly occupied and hence missed the bus .😑
And also everything I wanted to say is there. Only addition that I wud ve done is …… It seems in his busiest phase (apparently) his brother Raj Kapoor had once called him taxi.😋
