Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 36
—————————————-
DIL KI BAAT (1944) is an obscure film that I came to know about only after I got hold of the mp3 clip of a song from the film. A search on google revealed that the film was produced under the banner of Atre Pictures owned by Prahlad Keshav Atre, fondly known as Acharya Atre, one of the well-known writer-journalist, playwrite, poet, humourist in Marathi language. The star cast included Ishwarlal, Vanmala, Dixit, Durga Khote, Leela Sawant, Jairam Desai, Balwant etc.

How can I forget Acharya Atre? He is a part of my childhood memories. When the Marathi film ‘Shyamchi Aai’ (Shyam’s Mother, 1953) produced and directed by him was released, all the students of our primary school were taken to watch the movie. It was the film about the strong bond between mother and her child. It was so heart-touching movie that even now I get a lump in the throat when I listen Shyam singing the song after the death of his mother ‘aai manhoni koni’ ( Whom I should address as my mother). This film won the 1954 President Gold Medal for the Best Film and Vanmala got the Award for the Best Actress.

Then from 1956 and upto 1960, Acharya Atre was one of the architects of Sanyukta Maharashtra Movement. Through his editorials in his newspaper ‘Maratha’, he kept up the pressure on the State and Central Governments to carve out a separate Maharashtra State from the then bilingual Bombay state.

The film ‘Dil Ki Baat’ (1944) had 7 songs written by Ramamurti Chaturvedi (6) and Miss Vimal (1). All the songs were composed by C Ramchandra. I could not get any other details of the film. As I said earlier, I came to know about this film only because I came across the mp3 clip of one of the 7 songs from the film. But when I heard the entire song, I realised that there was a very feeble sound in one line of the last antara of the song. I deferred the posting of this song for the Blog until I was able to get a better audio clip.

During Atulites Meet in my house on May 3rd, I told my problem about the song under discussion to Sudhir ji who said that he would have this song in his collection. Unfortunately, the song that he fished out from his collection turned out to be another song with more or less similar wordings in the first line. In spite of this disappointment, I jokingly told him that it was for the first time that I had the mp3 clip of a song which he did not possess. This made Sudhir ji to dig deeper into his collection. He searched each and every mp3 clip in his hard disk that contained more or less similar wordings. After about 30 minutes of vigorous search, he was successful in locating the required mp3 clip which was found to be hiding in his hard disk disguised under a different caption! All this search was well worth it because the mp3 clip thus unearthed turned out to be of a good audio quality.

So here is the rare song ‘ main kis se kahoon apni kahaani’ sung by Vanmala and C Ramchandra, courtesy Sudhir Kapur for which I thank him for digging out the mp3 clip with a zeal that only he is capable of.

The effort made in searching this song was rewarding. Enjoy the song which is typical of C Ramchandra’s melodies.

Sadanandbhai,
I was wondering what you and Sudhirbhai were doing huddled on a sofa for a very long time, during our meeting at your place. I did ask Sudhirbhai what he was doing? His prompt reply was ‘nothing.’ I knew it can not be ‘nothing’ as I could see his external hard drive continuously flashing contradicting his statement. !!
Anyway, melodious song and your photos on video are also adorable. I request Arunbhai to write about Vanmala, the heroine of yesteryears with beautiful ‘cat’s’ eyes.

Sadanand ji,
Thanks for a nice article.
The Govt. of India had started giving awards to films only in 1954 and the very First award went to Marathi film “Shyam chi Aai ” as also the First National award for acting to Vanmala.
