Kyun prem ka baag lagaaya

NADI KINAARE (1939) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas. The star cast included M Kumar, Sitara Devi, Sunita Devi, Charlie, Ghory, Indubala, Bhagwandas, Ram Marathe etc. According to an article in ‘Filmindia’ – December 1939 issue, the film was inspired from 3 Hollywood films – ‘King and The Chorus Girl’ (1937), ‘Bluebeard’s Eight Wife’ (1938) and ‘The Rage of Paris’ (1938). All these three films belong of the genre of romantic comedy.

The film was reviewed in December 1939 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. I have culled out from there only the gist of the story of the film:

A drunkard Prince Anand (M Kumar) is to be married to Princess Sarita (Sunita Devi) of a neighbouring state according to the decision taken by the Council. However, Prince Anand falls in love with Nama, a gypsy girl. She is brought to the Palace disguised as a Princess to exert influence over the Prince to cure him of his drinking habit. Having lost her memory, Nama really believes herself to be a Princess.

The Prince gives up his drinking habit under the influence of Nama. But a series of misunderstanding adds to the comical situations. Nama was already engaged to a gypsy boy in her village. But due to her memory loss, she does not remember her impending marriage with the gypsy boy. After sometime, Nama gets her memory back and now she finds herself in a piquant situation – both the Prince and the gypsy boy suspect her of treachery. The comical situations turn into a tragedy as Nama drowns herself into a river and for once the hero fails to save her.

The film has 13 songs penned by P L Santoshi and D N Madhok. However, I could not find the division of songs among the lyricists. All the songs were composed by Gyan Dutt. Here is the first song from the film to appear in the Blog. The song is ‘kyon prem ka baag lagaaya pagle’ sung by Indubaala. Since Indubaala is in the star cast, it is apparent that she must have sung on herself. I could not visualise as to what role she could have played in a light comedy film except as a court singer in the Palace. The song under discussion as well as another song of her in the film is rendered in a semi-classical style.

Since I could not locate the song clip on YT, I have made a video clip from the mp3 clip of the song and uploaded the same on YT.

Atul ji,

Please correct the tag and elsewhere to ‘Indubala’ instead of ‘Induraani’.

Sadanand ji,

The song is sung by Indubala and NOT Indurani. Indubala is very much in the cast of the film also. Indurani is not in the cast at all.
Kindly make corrections.

Sadanand ji,

I am sorry but in the 5th paragraph Indurani’s name appears twice still.

Arun ji,

Thanks for pointing out. When I checked the draft, I found that I had inadvertently mentioned ‘Indurani’ in paragraph-5. Now Atul ji has carried out the corrections.

It appears that I was also under the spell of your recent article on ‘Indurani’ 🙂
