THE SECRETARY (1938) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor, Charlie, Kalyani, Begg, Wahidan Bai, Rajkumari etc. The film was based on a story written by Gunvantrai Acharya, one of the most prolific novelists in Gujarati language. By the way, I observe that Gunvantrai Acharya wrote story and screen play for films directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Ranjit Movietone like Gorakh Aaya (1938), Musaafir (1940) and Sasural (1941). Both came to Ranjit Movietone after their stints with journalism in Gujarati newspapers. Incidentally, all the three films and the film under discussion had Gyan Dutt as the music director.
I became interested in the story of the film because of the unusual title of the film. While detailed story was not available, a review of the film published in December 1938 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine had a synopsis of the story:
Ramila (Madhuri) is a modern girl educated in Europe who is the pampered child of a wealthy father. The father has an enterprising secretary, Anil (Trilok Kapoor). Some humourous situations are created on account of the different perceptions of Ramila with modern outlook and her father with conservative attitudes. Ramila falls in love with Anil but a crook Prince Roy (probably Charlie) creates complications with the help of Ramila’s little dog. Things become more complicated when Ramila undertakes to run her father’s business.
Ramila’s father dies suddenly. Anil who loves Ramila now decides to tame the assertive Ramila who is in control of her father’s business. Anil conspires with family’s solicitor and ‘inherits’ business. This leaves Ramila almost penniless. Now Ramila finds herself exactly opposite side of what she was earlier. She is now the personal secretary to Anil. Through the riots of humorous situations, the story progresses to its expected end – Ramila falls in the arms of Anil.
The film had as many as 15 songs written by P L Santoshi (11) and 4 songs being unattributed. I have a doubt whether records for all the songs were issued. All the songs were composed by Gyan Dutt. Only two songs from the film are available on YT – both sung by Wahidan Bai. There may be songs sung by Kalyani and Rajkumari which at the moment I am not able to lay my hands on.
I am presenting the first song from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is ‘kyun tune ki naadaani’ sung by Wahidan Bai. The song is penned by P L Santoshi which is set to music by Gyan Dutt.
