Lata Mangeshkar who first sang in a Marathi film ‘Gajabhau’ (1944), is still continuing to sing for Hindi films albeit very sparingly. As per http://www.myswar.com, she sang a solo song for the film ‘Dunno No Y2 Life is a Moment’ (2015). That gives her playback career a span of over 7 decades – a world record, I guess, in playback singing for films. In fact, she sang for 46 films between 2000-2015. I thought why not do a similar exercise for Talat Mehmood.

I was in the process of preparing a short write up on Talat Mehmood with one of his rare songs of the 1950s on the occasion of his 16th death anniversary which fell on May 9, 2016. While preparating for the write up, I was looking for the span of Talat Mehmood’s playback singing career. However, due to some gliches in my laptop, I could not open my laptop. So the write-up got delayed.

Without going through any data base, I was under the impression that Talat Mehmood’s active playback singing career may have virtually ended by 1965. I got this impression probably because his voice was already cracking at a higher pitch in one of the songs ae sanam aaj ye qasam khaayen from ‘Jahaanara’ (1964). Mohammed Rafi had already become the most preferred male playback singer f ormusic directors as well as producers/directors/distributors. Later on, I found that Talat Mehmood’s playback singing career extended up to, say 1970. Thereafter, Talat Mehmood sang very few songs for Hindi films from 1971 until his death in 1998. To be precise, he sang only 7 songs for 4 Hindi films during 1971-98.

While searching for Talat Mehmood songs of post-1970 period, I came across a song which I heard for the first time even though the audio clip of the song was uploaded on YT sometime in 2013 by Shri Gajendra Khanna, probably the first one to upload the song. The song is ‘tup taap tup taap tup taap boonden barse’ from a bilingual film ‘Artap’ (unreleased/incomplete film of 1982). I liked the song so much that I gave up my idea of selecting one of his songs from the 1950s as planned and instead decided to discuss this song of 1982.

According to http://www.salilda.com, the film was to be made in Bengali and Hindi. When Talat Mehmood came to know about it, he requested Salil Choudhari to give him a chance to sing one of his songs. So the song under discussion was recorded in Talat Mehmood’s voice both for Bengali and Hindi versions. No information of the star cast of the film is available. For some reasons, the film remained incomplete. In the meanwhile, the tape on which the songs were recorded, remained missing until it was retrieved by an admirer of Salil Choudhari after many years.

The Bengali version of the song was written by Salil Choudhari while the Hindi version was written by Yogesh. It is typical Salil Choudhari composition with symphony type orchestration during the interlude of the songs. In keeping with the limitation of Talat Mehmood’s voice at that age, Salil Choudhari has composed the whole song in the lower to middle octaves. I am surprised to note that in this song Talat Mehmood’s voice sounds better than some of his songs of the films of 1965 and thereafter. Kudos to Salil Choudhari who managed to get the best out of Talat Mehmood in this song when his voice was not as good as in 1950s and 1960s.

I particularly liked the way Salil Choudhari made Talat Mehmood to sing ‘chup chaap, chup chaap, chup chaap’ three times at the end of the song with low voice to give an impression of hush hushing the craving for the loved one.

Both Bengali and Hindi versions of this song are available in YouTube.
Talat’s voice is still silken in spite of advancing age.
