The decade of the 1950’s saw meteoric rise of O P Nayyar quickly going to the Top within 4 years after his first film Aasmaan-52. He also had another honour. The opening tune of one of the songs of his first film ( pom pom pom baaja boley) Aasmaan-52 was used as the signature tune for Binaca geetmala program of Radio Ceylon.
From 1950 to 1960, Nayyar gave music in 38 films. With 8 films in 56, 9 films in 57 and again 9 films in 58, he covered 26 films in just 3 years. In 1956, his hit musical films were Bhagam Bhag, Chhoo Mantar, Dhake ki Malmal, Hum sab chor hain and Naya Andaz.
Film Naya Andaz-56 had that iconic duet of Shamshad and Kishore, “Meri neendon mein tum, mere khwabon mein tum “- one of my favourite songs. Today’s song for discussion is also from film Naya Andaz-56 and it is sung by Shamshad Begum. This song too was one of the popular songs in those days. The film had 11 songs and 7 songs are already discussed on this Blog. I wonder why this lovely song remained uncovered ! May be it was destined for me to discuss…Daane Daane pe likha hai…..
Film Naya Andaz-56 was produced and directed by K.Amarnath aka Amarnath Ghelaram Khetarpal ( 1-12-1914 to 14-5-1983 ), under his own K. Amarnath production banner. Amarnath produced 11 films from Alif laila-53 to Vo din yaad karo-71, co-produced 3 films and directed 34 films fro Matwali Jogan-34 to Vo din yaad karo-71.
Naya Andaz was a remake of the famous musical film Bazaar-1949, for which Shyamsunder had composed the evergreen song, “Saajan ki galiyan chhod chalen ” sung soulfully by Lata. There were 16 songs in that film. One of them, “zara sun lo, hum apne pyar ka afsana kehte hain ” sung by Lata and Rajkumari was composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram. Bazaar-49 was also directed by K.Amarnath. Actor Gope was the only actor repeated in its remake, ‘Naya Andaz’-56 and here too he did the same role i.e. Hero’s sidekick.
GOPE VISHENDAS KAMLANI was born on 11-4-1913 at Hyderabad ( Sindh). The family had 8 children-3 daughters and 5 sons. Only Gope and his brother Ram Kamlani joined the film line. More than scooling, Gope was interested in acting in dramas and seeing films, so naturally he could not pass his Matriculation. His first role in films was K.S.Daryani’s film “Insaan ya Shaitan”-1933. He picked speed fast and by 1940 he had acted in 26 films. from 1940 to 1950 he did 65 films and from 1951 to 1957-till he died- he did 64 films. So, his graph was going up and up till his end. His total film tally is 152 films.
His noteworthy films are Prarthana, Laila Majnu, Rangbhooi, Doosri Shadi, Pyar ki jeet, Patanga, Bazaar and Arzoo during his early career. In the 1950s he acted in many well known films. His role in Laila Majnu-45 was much appreciated. The lead pair was S.Nazir and Swarnalata ( they married each other later on ). Gope was so famous and popular as a comedian that in many films, the hero would end up becoming a non entity ! For example films like Duniya ek Tamasha (Shyam), Andher nagari chaupat Raja ( Amarnath actor), or film Makkhichoos (Mahipal).
Gope invariably got a song or two to sing in most films. In 152 films, he sang (lipsynched) 81 songs on screen. It is claimed that he had sung 37 songs in his initial films ( out of the 81 songs) himself, but this claim seems difficult to digest, as the actor’s name was given on the record till 1951 on most occasions.
In film Patanga-49, his song “mere piya gaye Rangoon” had become a craze and people used to flock to the theatre for this song alone.
Along with comedian Yaqub, Gope formed a pair and they created magic in films Patanga-49, meherbani-50, Sagai-51, Hungama-52 and Malkin-53. This pair was a guarantee of success for the film and they were regarded as ‘paisa vasool’ material by the audience. Later on Gope formed a pair with comedienne Yashodhara Katju in films viz. Pyar ki jeet, Rangeen zamana, Hamari manzil, Rakhi, Bahurani, Bhai behan etc.
Along with brother Ram Kamlani, he formed Gope Productions and produced films, Hungama and Maalkin. Film Maalkin-53 was later remade as “Biradari”-66, by Ram Kamlani under the banner of Gope Productions.
During the shooting of film Gopinath-48, he fell in love with actress Latika. They got married on 5-2-1949. Gope converted to Christianity for this marriage.
Two years ago, Latika’s daughter Ms. Sindy Bell contacted me from UK, asking for Latika’s filmography. She gave me a life story of Latika. Last week Latika’s grand daughter contacted me by mail, requesting for Gope’s Filmography. Harish Raghuwanshi ji was kind enough to provide this to her, through me.
While shooting for the film, “Teesri gali “, Gope got a massive heart attack and died instantly on the sets. This hapened on 25-3-1957. His body was kept in the coffin in a sharkskin suit, tie and shoes. Hundreds of film artistes attended his funeral. ( Adapted from ‘Inhe na Bhulana’and ‘webgurjari’…courtesy Harish Raghuwanshi ji)
NAYA ANDAZ-1956 came up at a time when the stars of actors like Kishore Kumar and Johnny Walker were on the rise. The situation was such that whatever these two touched was becoming Gold(or at least Silver).Stories and songs were written for them and they were booked to their neck with assignments.
Stories really did not matter much. Audience was also not expecting top class Histrionics, but they wanted foot tapping lilting music and a laugh riot.
Naya Andaz was made to fulfill these aspirations of the masses and to a great extent succeeded too. It was a pleasant surprise for many to see Meena kumari smiling and laughing and joking for a change. Of course a bit of serious situation was also provided so as not make Meenakumari feel totally lost.
Sukhan miyaan(Murad) and his son Chand(KK) are poets/singers. They are always competing with each other to prove their superiority over the other. Fed up of this, Chand, along with his friend Karim(Gope) leaves home to make it big in the big new world. They are joined,on way, by Lali(Kumkum) a Gypsy banjarin who falls for Karim.
This trio arrives in Bombay and Chand makes it really very big here. He meets a stage dancer Mala(Meena Kumari) who promptly starts loving Chand. This is not digested by the Theatre Manager Ashok Babu(Pran), who along with Mala’s brother Brij(Jayant) hatches a plan by which Chand is sent away far off and Mala is isolated.
The rest of the story depicts in a slightly hilarious way, how Karim and Lali help the lovers to reunite and defeat Ashok babu.
We can see from the video of the song that the song is filmed on Meenakumari. She was an excellent actress but a very bad dancer. Funnily, she used to get many roles as a dancer. When she dances on the screen, even a child can clearly make out that she can not dance. in this clip also same is the case. Note her discomfort and strained effort while dancing. Luckily the song is just superb and one can enjoy it for its audio itself.

I remember OPN saying in an interview that this was one of his most favourite songs among the ones he had given music to. Naya Andaaz had lovely songs (as usual with OPN); my personal favourite is ”Aaj Suhani Raat R”.

I was a bit surprised to note that in the film clip the second antara of the audio version is omitted. Was this cut from the movie? It often used to be the other way around! BTW in keeping with the character of the lyric and song, the words of the first line of the first antara seem to be “Meri ankhiya de dole pyaar dekh mere saajana”.

Mahesh ji
You are right. It should be 1949. Regret the error.
