KHUSHBOO (1954) was produced under the banner of Beautiful Pictures and was directed by Rana Indu Shamsher. The cast included Motilal, Shyama, Moti Sagar, Shakila, Kesri, Noor, S K Prem, Amina Bai, Radheshyam etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. I was aware about “Khushboo”(1976), but I came to know about the existence of “Khushboo”(1954) only after I got the mp3 clip of the song under discussion.

The film may have flopped at the box office seeing that no information of the contents of the film is available on internet. However, the star cast and a few still photographs from the film are available on internet, which give me an impression that it was a social film with a family drama.

This film was probably one of the last films of Motilal as a romantic hero. In fact, he was passing through a phase of transition as a lead actor in films of early 50s. The box office failure of the film may have prompted him to switch over to character actor roles which he did exceedingly well. In fact, I knew about his natural acting prowess mainly in his roles of character actors in films such as Devdas (1955), Jagte Raho (1956), Paigham (1958), Anari (1959), Parakh (1960) etc. In some of these films, he must have left lasting impression on a majority of cinegoers who had watched these films.

‘Khushboo’ (1954) had 11 songs penned by Gopal Singh Nepali which were composed by music Director Shankar Lal, a name I heard for the first time. Other than the film under discussion, I could get the name of only one more film ‘Khubsoorat Duniya (1947) where he was the music director.

I am presenting the first song from the film to appear in the Blog. This is a duet, ‘udhar chaand niklaa idhar ham bhi nikle raat ko’ sung by Asha Bhosle and G M Durrani.

After listening to this song, I am veering towards a view that G M Durrani leaves his stamp of excellence in his duet songs. The voice of Asha Bhonsle sounds very fresh and that makes this duet quite pleasing to the ears.

sitaaron ke neeche neeche
karen mulaaqaatein
sitaaron ke neeche neeche
karen mulaaqaatein

jab tak jawaani hai ji
hamaari hain raatein
hamaari hain raatein
udhar chaand niklaa

idhar ham bhi nikle raat ko

kaahe ko

I love the first-one.
