Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 42
—————————————-
UMMEED (1941) was produced by Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas. The cast included Ishwarlal, Prabha, Noor Jahan Sr., Dixit, Neela, Ibrahim, Brijmala, Bhagwandas, Kasam, Kesri etc. The film was a family drama with a light comedy touch. The film was reviewed in May 1941 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine and had given a verdict of a delightful entrainment. A gist of the story of the film based on this review is given below:

A self-made wealthy man has a daughter, Suman (Noor Jahan Sr.) who is in love with Anil (Ishwarlal), a happy-go-lucky son of a banker. Suman’s father does not approve of her choice of man as he considers Anil a worthless man. Despite this, Anil and Suman go for some escapade which is considered outrageous by the society. Photograph of two lovers in a ridiculous state enrages both the parents and Anil is expelled from the house.

But Anil cannot remain quite. He acts as a poor motor driver and gets chummy with a poor girl Leela (Prabha) He creates an illusion that he is in love with her. She falls to his overtures not knowing that he continues to be in love with Suman. Obviously, complications follow with both Leela and Suman vie with each other. After several coincidences, one of which is when Suman is caught in fire and survives the accident with an amputated leg, both the girls realise that they are in love with the same person, Anil.

After the fire accident, Anil becomes loyal to Suman. However, as a disabled girl, now she does not want to marry Anil. She sacrifices her love for Anil in favour of Leela and gets her married to Anil.

The film had 8 songs, all penned by D N Madhok which were set to music by Khemchand Prakash. Despite my best efforts, I could not locate any of the songs from the film on YT. I have mp3 clip of one song with me from which I have made a video of the song and uploaded the same on YT.

I am presenting the first song movie to appear in the blog. This song ‘gend samajh kar uchhaalon na sajaniya’ is sung by Ishwarlal and Noor Jahan (Sr). Since both have acted in the film, it is an actor-singer song. All I know about Noor Jahan Sr. is that she started acting in films sometime in mid-30s. So, just to differentiate between her and Mallika-e-Taranum Noor Jahan, at some places, the suffix ‘Sr.’ is put to her name. There may be one or two more actresses/singers with the same name. But I do not have any details about them.

Ishwarlal (9/10/1911 – 22/1/1969) was born in Waghniya in Gujarat. His real name was Hariprasad Joshi. I came to know about Ishwarlal as one of the veteran actors of the 30s and 40s only through browsing hundreds of pages of Filmindia magazines from 1937-49. One of the features of his acting career was that he alternated between lead roles and second lead or character actor’s roles in the 1940s. From many photographs I had seen of him enacting his roles, I can say that Ishwarlal had a great screen presence. During his stint in film industry, he acted in more than 80 films and directed about 12 films. Unfortunately, most of his films as lead actor are not available. One can see him in ‘Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen’ (1963) in which he has acted in the role of Ashok Kumar’s father who rejects his son because he was born dark.

Both Ishwarlal and Noor Jahan Sr. were mainly actors. They had to sing songs on themselves when the system of playback singing was yet to take firm roots.

Song-Gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya (Ummeed)(1941) Singers-Ishwarlal, Noor Jahan Sr., Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Khemchand Prakash

Lyrics

gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na
chhotaa sa dil hai par armaan bahut hain
chhotaa sa dil hai par armaan bahut hain

tamannaayen ismein meri jaan bahut hain
tamannaayen ismein meri jaan bahut hain
sambhaalo isse to sambhaalon na
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na

gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na

mere dil mein tere siwa aur kya hai
mere dil mein tere siwa aur kya hai
tu is dil mein ismein bhala aur kya hai
tu is dil mein ismein bhala aur kya hai
iss dil ko dil mein basa lo na
iss dil ko dil mein basa lo na
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na

gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na sajaniya
gend samajh ke uchhaalo na

I met Ishwarlal, when I was very young, at the premier of a Gujarati Film in around 1962 at Krishna Cinema, Mumbai. I think the movie’s name was ‘Jevi Chhoo Tevi’. He had the leading role in that movie. I am not very sure. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

Atul ji,

After reading the article on Ishwarlal, written in in Gujarati by Harish ji, I came to know that Hariprasad Joshi was NOT Ishwarlal’s real name but it was his father’s name. Please carry out the correction accordingly. .

I am sorry for the wrong information which I got from ‘Tujhe Mere Geet Bulaaten Hain’, a compendium of Bharat Vyas’s songs, compiled by Sanjiv Tanwar.
