June 27th (2016) is a date with RD Burman. It is his 77th birth anniversary. We know so many things about RD Burman by heart. We don’t require a wikipedia or any other site to tell us that he was son of SD Burman the music director of the golden era. We need no site to tell us that Ashok Kumar was the one who gave him the nickname Pancham. We know that he used to be addressed as Panchamda. We know that he had a knack of making music with a spoon and a glass like he did for the song from “Yaadon Ki Baraat”– Churaa liya hai tumne jo dil ko. He had worked with all the best song writers and singers of his time. He was comfortable giving music based on ragas or western beats.
Many actors became stars with R D Burman giving music in their debut movies- Sunny Deol, Kumar Gaurav, Sanjay Dutt etc. of the 80s. There are other actors as well whose debut movies had RD Burman’s songs. There are as many RD Burman fans in the film industry as there are in common folk like us. There are umpteen number of movies made with either R D Burman songs reused, recorded or playing in the background.
So how do we say we miss you Pancham da? but of course with a song from one of his movies. It would be a bonus if the song was sung by him too right? So we will have a song from “Balika Badhu” (1976). This song is a Baaraat song. We have Asrani lip-synching to RD Burman’s voice as the baaraat makes it way from one village to the next. The movie was set in pre-independence time hence the Dulha is in a Palkhi with his younger brother and his jija- Asrani and other family members follow in Bullock carts. Chalo let us also do Bhoom Bhoom Na with Panchamda to this song written by Anand Bakshi.
